The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has dropped a bombshell statement. According to them, no Igbo man will contest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Instead, they say the South East should wait until 2035 to push for the presidency.

Yes, you heard that right. Ohanaeze is openly backing President Tinubu’s second-term bid. They insist the only realistic path for an Igbo presidency will come in 2035—if the zoning formula is adjusted.

The faction of Ohanaeze that released this statement, led by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chief Thompson Ohia, revealed that after a crucial meeting with South East leaders, they agreed that contesting in 2027 would be pointless. Instead, they project that up to 95% of Igbo votes will rally behind Tinubu in the coming election.

And it doesn’t stop there. The group has even gone further to suggest who could emerge as the strongest Igbo candidate in 2035—pointing directly to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

But the shockwave came when Ohanaeze told Labour Party’s Peter Obi to completely abandon his presidential ambition for 2027 and instead support Tinubu’s re-election. This comes despite Obi recently joining the ADC coalition in a plot to unseat Tinubu.

On Arise TV, anchors like Rufai Oseni and Abatti dissected this dramatic move, warning that while socio-political groups like Ohanaeze are influential, they cannot stop any Nigerian from contesting. They argued that the Constitution gives every citizen the right to run, and some analysts believe this is simply Ohanaeze’s internal agenda, not the will of the entire South East.

Still, this twist raises big questions: Will Peter Obi obey Ohanaeze and step down? Can Tinubu now rely on massive Igbo support in 2027? Or will divisions and rival ambitions tear everything apart before then?
