Former presidential candidate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has faulted the party’s decision to zone the presidency, warning that it amounts to an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid.

‎Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, shortly after the PDP National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja, Olawepo-Hashim described the move as “unprecedented” in the history of the party.

‎“Zoning the presidency to the south is a default campaign for the return of President Bola Tinubu. Because those who are mounting this campaign of zoning to the south are the same people who are saying we are in PDP, but we work for President Tinubu,” he said.

‎He argued that the decision effectively weakens the PDP’s chances of producing a viable presidential candidate.

He added, “It’s a default campaign for the PDP not to have a viable candidate by those people. So this is a subtle campaign for an easy ride of Bola Tinubu’s re-election.”

‎The PDP chieftain stressed that the party had never barred any region from contesting the presidency, citing past conventions as examples.

‎“The PDP has never zoned the presidency before. In 1999, President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was then General Obasanjo, contested against Alhaji Rimi from Northern Nigeria and some other candidates, Dr Alex Ekwueme, etc.

“In 2003, as a sitting president in the villa, President Obasanjo had to contest again with Chief Barnabas Gemade from Benue, Alhaji Rimi from Kano. The party never shut the door against any zone,” he recalled.

‎He maintained that the NEC of the PDP made a “big error” by adopting the zoning decision.

“I’m not saying that they didn’t do it by majority. They did it by a majority. It was quite democratic. All the organs of the party decided. But it made a big error,” he said.

All the major political parties in Nigeria believe that power must remain in the south untill 2031.

But they should try not to zone it to south west o.

If they can convince obi to return to PDP, or GEJ

He understands better, as things stand presently, no one from the South can defeat President Tinubu, no one!

Technically, with the exception of fPGEJ who has not categorically stated that he will be contesting, any other Southerner has the tendency to rule for another 8 years which the North won't buy.

Is he not from Southern Nigeria, and he was once an aspirant. He should contest abi is he afraid of Tinubu ni?

Zoning is dead even if Tinubu wins in 2027 it is not automatic that it returns to the North

I do not know why people always taking someone like Olawepo Kashim serious,a political scammer

Its APC that will suffer from the discrimination against the North. Early zoning bars northern candidates which has never happened before. Subnational politicians know the effects of running for local elections on a party and administration that bars Northern candidates from contesting for president thus stopping them from exercising their rights. I expect litigations though but that won't assuage the North.

he may be right though, Tinubu is the biggest politician from the south as of today. No politician from the Southern part of the country can match his political acumen…..only delusional ipobidient minions would believe bitter obi is a match. If the election is going to be 2horse race between Agbotikuyo and Tinubu , be reassured that it would be a landslide victory and one of the easiest elections to be won by an incumbent president

How does this write up concern Tinubu? Is he in PDP or was he among the people that voted to zone the presidency to the South? A party made a grievous mistake and a former presidential candidate under the same party was pointing to the error but you are saying Tinubu, Tinubu.

he is from Kwara State, north central of Nigeria. The only gospel truth is Tinubu doesn't have a single contender for 2027, all I see are pretenders.
