Based on the current economic data and conditions in Nigeria, there are several significant challenges facing teachers, particularly men, in private schools. Here are the key economic factors that might lead some male teachers to consider leaving the profession:

Severe Economic Pressures
Low Wages vs. High Inflation: Many private schools pay monthly salaries as low as ₦25,000, which is below Nigeria's former minimum wage of ₦30,000. while the country faces severe inflation. Nigeria's inflation rate remains at 21.88% as of July 2025 Nigeria Inflation Rate though it has decreased from previous highs of over 34%.

Inadequate Compensation: Research shows that teachers in Nigeria earn only 90 percent of GDP per capita Teacher pay in Africa: Evidence from 15 countries - making it one of the lowest teacher-to-GDP ratios in Africa. Even in better-paying private schools, salaries typically range from ₦150,000 to ₦300,000 Salary Structure of Private & Public Secondary School Teachers In Nigeria (2025) which may not keep pace with rising living costs.

Cost-of-Living Crisis

Housing costs in urban areas
Transportation expenses
Food and basic necessities

Healthcare and education for their own families
Gender-Specific Considerations for Male Teachers
Men often face additional societal pressure as primary breadwinners, making the low teaching salaries particularly challenging when they need to.

Support extended families
Meet traditional expectations of financial provision
Plan for major life events like marriage and home ownership
Provide for children's education and healthcare

Teacher Shortage Crisis
Teacher scarcity is already hitting private schools as the cost-of-living crisis worsens Teacher scarcity hits private schools in Nigeria as cost-of-living crisis worsens indicating that many educators are indeed leaving the profession for better-paying opportunities in other sectors or countries.

While teaching remains a noble profession with intrinsic rewards, the harsh economic realities in Nigeria have created genuine financial hardships that force difficult career decisions. However, it's worth noting that some private schools do offer competitive packages, and the education sector remains crucial for Nigeria's development. Teachers considering career changes might also explore opportunities in educational technology, corporate training, or international schools that offer better compensation packages.

The writer na the person wey them talk say e papa lock for 5 years for hut ? Cus how minimum wage take be 30k... Jokes apart what you have said is true. And it is affecting the whole school system ..I am a make teacher, although I am in a better paying school ..and argument with high end home lesson customers. But I see what is going on in other schools through the lesson notes of my lesson students... It's just so obvious the teachers just come to class just to fulfill all righteousness and get their monthly stipend...

As a parent please look into what is going on in your wards school ..it's not just enough to pay school fees ( no matter how high the school fees may be ) infact the schools paying the highest school fees do the highest cover up and you think your child is good but he's rotting away intellectually and academically.
How can someone in ss3 not know how to do L.C.M, a science student for the matter ...

I rest my case Sha ... May God help us all ...

No lies told. A lot of schools with high fees have a policy not to fail students. They would rather let go of teachers that don't conform than show parents the actual state of their child's learning. In a lot of these schools, all they focus on is speech. As long as the child can speak well, they are not bothered about anything else.

Oga please do something about my first advice, now na holiday period, parents dey find tutors for their children wella...

If you're a popular teacher in your neighborhood, more easier for you. No just go any body house oh, them go price you like creyfish, first try all the rich people for your area first....

Me I hardly looked for clients, na referral up and down, I had to turn some down cause I no wan dey run up and down and I had a main job too.

See all these men, especially big shop owners wey dey barely get time for their children, target big government workers....

Guy just have faith and follow due process, you'll be shocked how you're making money without wearing corporate every single day wey chalk go wan finish...

Me dey wear shorts go my lesson those days, chop food join tire... No complaints, as long as you're good with teaching, clients go flow naturally...

Another method even if it might take awhile to get, na online tutoring, especially to Asian countries, the pay is sweet eh but you'll have to finish some online courses first to be qualified and you'll have to have a good phone, Internet sub and nice background...

Think about your life? Can you take care of few things with that money?
I was once in your shoes, I am happy I left and never looked back although it was because the woman was going to pay us 4200 or 4500 after a whole months job.
Omo that phase was terrible. It's good all those things happened because it opened my eyes to a lot of realities.

The bigger your dreams and ambitions are, the bigger and smarter you have to work.
Re: The Mass Exodus Of Male Teachers From Private Schools by Bahamas95(m): 10:23am On Aug 27, 2025
Teaching in most private schools is modern day slavery, I don't even advice women to do it.

Men would rather do kpo-kpo work than work in private schools. The reason women feel comfortable doing it is because they got husbands paying the bills......For others they don't wanna be bored at home so they need something to keep them busy.

I know one proprietor like that, who always likes to criticize Tinubu. He was so loud about the minimum wage that #70,000 is too small. Seems he was blinded by hatred hence didn't realize on time that his employees, teachers will demand their own salary to be raised too. All of the teachers resigned because he couldn't afford to pay more than 30k. 😁😁😁😁

I left the teaching industry since 5yrs now, family man and was paid N30k as at that time. And the proprietoress refused to increase our salary. Am no more in that field. Even when I was there I was still doing affiliate marketing online to make ends meet ooo.

This salary is too poor. Pls add something else to what you doing now. May God hear your prayers.
