If it’s any consolation, this is not a Nigerian thing. Years back I had a card with this text on my office wall, to stop colleagues whining about how they can’t make ends meet despite our nice German wages. The card asks: Why do some people buy stuff they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t even like?

If you are on your own, the only way to get financial freedom is to scale up what you are doing to be employing many people. You need proper accounting and faithful employees. When you kick off like that investors will later be begging to partner with you. There is no other way.

One evening, while sitting alone in his car, he confessed: “This Benz no dey sweet me. I thought once I got it, my life would change. But now I realize I only did it for other people. I don’t even recognize myself anymore.”

And that’s the painful truth: many Nigerians are living like Chuka. We let societal pressure push us into things we don’t want, into debts we can’t repay, into lifestyles we can’t sustain. We kill ourselves trying to prove a point to people who don’t even care.

This is a raw reminder that until you stop living for people and start living for yourself, nothing will ever feel enough.

Because the truth is, peace of mind will take you farther than any Benz.
