Elderly Passenger Deplaned For Refusing To Comply With Instructions And Threatening Airline Staff

Michael Achimugu is the director of public affairs and consumer protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Michael Achimugu @mikeachimugu01

Earlier today, an elderly passenger whose seat selection happened to be by the exit door was asked by cabin crew to have their seat reassigned.

The passenger vehemently declined despite being made to understand the reasons why the switch had to be made. He threatened twice to slap the hostess.

As a result, the pilot called in airport security, including the Air Force, to remove the passenger. He (passenger) insisted on speaking with the NCAA Consumer Protection Officers on duty, and they were brought in to deescalate the situation.

The passenger was advised per the threats made and why he had to be deplaned.

The pilot insisted on not flying the passenger for safety reasons.

Airport security and NCAA officials have led him back to the terminal. He has understood the ramifications of his actions and has calmed down. He will be allowed to board the evening flight later today.

May I reiterate that the responsibility of deescalating potential altercation rests with both cabin crew and passenger, and it is not ideal to threaten or actually hit people aboard an aircraft.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of service you have received, kindly report to the NCAA Consumer Protection Department via cpd.ncaa.gov.ng, and a resolution will be reached.

Threats of violence against cabin crew are not acceptable.

Let us all ensure to keep our skies safe and allow other passengers to enjoy their flying experience.

What exactly was the reason for the seat swap?

If a passenger is not willing to or is unable to assist in case of an emergency, they will not be allowed to sit by the exit door. If they do not understand the language in which instructions will be given during an emergency, they are not allowed to sit by the exit door. If they are less than a certain age or too old, they are not allowed to seat there. A person with reduced mobility would also not be allowed to sit by the exit door. Etc...

What exactly is happening these days? Why are people disobeying rules and regulations when onboard aircrafts?

Is it to trend, or the devil is just having fun with people's lives?

No name, no description of the elderly person nor gender.

No information as to the airport where purported incident occured, no information of the airline or flight.

I call BS.

I will keep saying this;
Until the NCAA educate people on air travel safety, rules and regulations we will keep having problems with airlines in Nigeria.

As a result of insecurity and accident rates; a lot of people are using air travel as an option; which is good.

But not all of these people knows the basic rule and regulations in an airplane.

Airplane isn’t like your GIG, GUO or ilorin emirate buses, and these are what people don’t know.

What do you need those details for? Why do you think an official statement would be made up?

Nice One .
Elders are supposed to have sense to know that they are elders & should just rest.

An Elder still thinking he is mobile like in his 30's & 40's thereby refusing to switch seats away from the emergency exit door.

He got what he deserves by the officials removing him from the plane .

You should have sent him back to his house, you cannot become authority just because you want to board a plane.

If you are not comfortable with regulations, you use Ur legs to waka to where you heading to

Former governor of Edo state started the airport rascality and unruly behavior, others simply copied him, all in the name of claiming right or being outspoken, forgetting that they are constituting safety threat for other passengers

Watch as Nigerians will troop out to either
1. Support him because he was behaving unruly and unruliness endears this generation
2. Bash him because he was a man.

They're trying to bring in more control and sanity in the air travel space.

With the two incidents in the past, a need for an "example" of what could happen in the event of passenger disobedience to flight crew members became necessary.

How can an airline make available for selection of a seat by the plane exit

Well said, this will act as a deterrent to any other passenger who may wish to resort to violence for simple safety rules.

I think the NCAA decision is for safety reasons.. An elderly man is not supposed to seat there. A panic attack or just a minor plane turbulence fit make old man open the exit door easily🤣

People are used to not obeying laws in this country but when they get to other land they behave well and those who still refused to obey are seriously dealt with.
