FG Rewards World’s Best English Student Nafisa With ₦200,000 Prize by Newsgeek24(op): 12:33am On Aug 29, 2025
The Federal Government has celebrated 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullah Aminu for emerging as the World’s Best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, News360 Nigeria reports.

At a ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, presented Nafisa with a cheque of N200,000, commending her for bringing pride to Nigeria on the global stage.

The event was attended by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suiwaba Ahmed; Yobe State Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Abba Adam; senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education; and representatives of the Yobe State Ministry of Education.

Five other category winners from the competition were also recognised.

Dr. Alausa described Nafisa’s accomplishment as a reflection of the brilliance and resilience of Nigerian students, stressing that her global recognition highlights the need for continuous investment in education.

He assured that the Federal Government would sustain efforts to promote academic excellence through scholarships, mentorships, and improved access to quality learning resources.

Prof. Abba Adam praised Nafisa and other winners as “Amazons” and symbols of resilience, noting that their success mirrors the progress of Yobe State in rebuilding its education sector.

He pointed out the recent graduation of 171 state-sponsored medical students from Indian universities, now serving in hospitals across the state, as well as the upgrading of colleges of education, agriculture, and business studies to boost teaching and research.

In her remarks, Nafisa expressed gratitude to her parents, teachers, and the Nigerian government, pledging to inspire other students to embrace perseverance and confidence in their ability to compete globally.

She also unveiled her initiative, English Language for Peace and Development, aimed at promoting literacy, dialogue, and social cohesion among young people.

There's nothing special about what she did.

People from the South have been breaking such records without getting a dime. Go through Nairaland and see tons of threads about students who won competitions without getting anything.

Now that a Northerner did it, their people started writing articles up and down demanding that the girl be appreciated for doing well in an ordinary English contest. That's because this government has been recognizing and rewarding sportspeople.

What honour does winning an English contest bring to Nigeria again? Did she discover the cure for HIV/AIDS or the solution to climate change? If you have a major scientific breakthrough, NLNG normally gives them $100k in a contest. Novelists get the same amount too.

there's everything special sir, what is worth celebrating is worth celebrating very well. Name the southern students that also won world best in anything and was not celebrated. U r also saying what honor does winning an English contest bring to Nigeria? What a balderdash! So u don't know the importance of the lingua franca u r using to communicate? I rest my case. That same English is what u r using to communicate. Just like medicine, that same English was what brought prof Wole Soyinkas recognition in 1986.

Your comment reflects a narrow and dismissive view of academic excellence. Let’s address your points logically:

1️⃣ Undermining Academic Achievement
You ask, “What honour does winning an English contest bring to Nigeria?” — yet you forget that English is our official language, the medium of governance, law, education, and diplomacy. Excelling at the highest global level in it is no “ordinary contest.” It is a mark of intellectual capacity, discipline, and international competitiveness. A country that cannot appreciate excellence in language and academics is setting itself up for mediocrity.

2️⃣ On Recognition and Fairness
You claim southerners have been achieving without reward, but the solution is not to belittle this young lady. It is to demand fair recognition for all. Should we punish her because others were ignored? That logic breeds bitterness, not progress. The achievement stands on its own merit and deserves to be celebrated.

3️⃣ Comparing with HIV or Climate Change
Your comparison is misplaced. Not every achievement must be a “scientific breakthrough” to deserve honour. Do we only celebrate Olympic athletes who cure diseases? Of course not. Every sphere of human endeavour — sports, arts, science, or language — contributes to national pride and inspiration.

4️⃣ Value of Symbolic Rewards
₦200,000 is not about “buying” her achievement; it is about encouragement. It sends a message to millions of Nigerian students that excellence will be noticed. That motivation can produce the scientists, inventors, and innovators of tomorrow.

👉 In summary: instead of trivializing her success because she comes from a region you seem to resent, you should see it as an opportunity to advocate recognition for all Nigerian achievers. Progress is not made by tearing down one achiever to make a point — it is made by building a culture that celebrates and rewards excellence across board.

She won the medal for the country. Not for the state governor.

Truth is that the FG no try at all for the reward especially when compared to that of Dtigeress and Falcons.

It’s embarrassing and insensitive.

There must be an error somewhere, FG meant $200, 000 and not N200, 000; the minister needs to provide the rest.
If this is true, will anyone be encouraged to go to school again, footballers and basketball players $100k, world scholar N200k (128$) pere huh huh

I agree with you on this. To me I think Nigeria shouldn't be in the business of honoring speakers of language of some evil colonial master whose population is less than one thirds of Nigeria. The British should get monetary reward for speaking our local language more than us. Where is our national pride? Leaders of China, India and Russia consider it inferior to be speaking English, a small nation not up to the province of Shanghai. Let the British go and learn our language

Professor Soyinka wasn't recognised for knowing how to write and speak English. Professor Sonyinka was recognised for being an excellent playwright/novelist; these are two different things.

Once again, winning an English competition is nothing extraordinary. What Nigerian or global problem does knowing how to speak English solve? This is a language we speak and write every day. It could be a big deal for you because you struggle with it. For some of us, it is not a big deal.

Like the comment you quoted mentioned, NLNG (a joint-venture arrangement where the government has the highest stakes) recognises a ton of scholars who have done well in their fields with $100k every year.

FYI, in America, they beg people to come and study English in the university with juicy scholarships, but their people aren't willing to do that. It's only in Nigeria that we see English as a big deal. Well, it is not.

@JimRohn I have already addressed the issues you raised and it disgusts me whenever I criticise the way things are done and some nítwits call it hate.

For someone asking for who has done a similar thing in the past, read the link below and get enlightened. Once again, knowing how to speak and write a language is just a communication skill that doesn't solve any pressing issues in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world.

Now this is unacceptable. What is the ₦200,000 prize reward for an international honour in English? This pales in significance to the millions of naira doled out to compensate tⁿhe Super Falcons for their continental win recently. In fact, it's a disrespect to the girl. To conquer the world in English is no mean feat. I often tell people it's easier to pass Mathematics than English because Mathematics is "straightjacketed", English is not! Phonics, Structure, Comprehension, Punctuation, Spelling and all.

I think the Ministry of Education and the FG did her dirty!
