A renowned journalist, author and columnist, Ike Abonyi, has denounced claims by Human Rights Activist and Lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi offered him money for support.
Abonyi, who said he was present during the meeting which he brokered between Adeyanju and Obi in the run up to the 2023 elections, explained that Obi never made any such offer.


In a statement released in Abuja, on Friday, Abonyi who was reacting to Adeyanju’s tweet on the issue said claims made by Adeyanju were far from the truth.



Abonyi wrote, “I am at pains joining issues with a friend in public but at this instance, I cannot keep mum and allow untruths to thrive. My friend Deji Adeyanju just tweeted that why he stopped supporting the Labour Party, Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, was when he told him that he invested Anambra state money in his family business.

“I was at the meeting Deji had with Obi and was there all through and left with him after about three hours of frank discussion of Obi telling his life story in and out of government, none of which is new as he had said similar things repeatedly in public. I was shocked to my marrow reading from Deji what I did not hear. In my shock today, July 26, 2022, after reading the post, I wrote this to him -“Deji, Did you and Obi meet again or the one I was present. Haba! Deji, I’m shocked, you are free to support whoever without all these funny blackmails. You didn’t even factor my friendship with you.”

Speaking further Abonyi said, “On July 9, 2022, after a similar negative post on Obi that he can accept an appointment from the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, I had again written to Deji.

“My brother, good morning, when did it get to this point? Am still in shock. Obi is not looking for a job that Tinubu will be offering. As my friend even, if you no longer believe in the Obi project, I encourage you to stay on issues that will enhance your own reputation.

“Deji has not responded to any of my posts to him and has not picked up my calls. I had wanted us to resolve it as friends without my coming out publicly by urging him to withdraw his posts because they are not based on facts.


” As a journalist of long standing and as a Christian, I don’t need to be an Obi-centric person to resolve issues that border on facts and falsehood. No money was offered during or after the meeting, and there was no promise of any to the best of the knowledge.

Am not surprised one bit deji is doing exactly what his people are known for.

I have never seen Deji Adeyanju as a human right activist that you can trust. He comes off as someone who has mastered the art of using the tag of a "human rights advocate" to more or else bully and blackmail a corrupt ruling class. That's the way I look at him. When you talk of human rights activists, you talk of folks like Gani Fawhenmi and co. Deji is an oppurtuinist.

He sure knows the ills of the society and has managed to put himself in a vantage position from where he can use the media to draw attention to his character at critical political moments, but whether he could "fight" altruistically for the people irrespective of any sort of bribes/financial inducements directed towards his direction, is a different ball game altogether.

You also have to ask yourself some basic questions sometimes, like "how did the likes of Deji emerge as the dominant opinion moulders in the agitations for the respect for human rights in Nigeria "!? Who made them? Who empowered them? And who unleashed them on Nigerians..

In reality many Nigerians are myopic and never believe this country can be better. So they keep hating for no tangible reason and ignorantly keep rooting for leaders that don't really have ideas and mind of moving the country forward. Even if they see better options they will still vote for the bad ones. Yet they will be complaining the country is bad.
Things keep going out of hand and APC forget they are there for change not comparism with past government. As an average Nigeria WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING IN THIS COUNTRY.

Deji Adeyanju is a known hustler who can do anything whether good or bad just to put food on the table. If he can abandone his wife and son, for an elderly rich woman that can qualify as his mother, then lying against Peter Obi shouldn't surprise any sane person.

Obidients always fail to see the bigger picture—there isn’t a single politician who doesn’t give money. Offering a ‘thank you’ to journalists, party loyalists, activists, and others is a common practice worldwide, whether it’s called a token of appreciation, mobilization, or by any other name. Denying this reality as a politician is simply digging your own grave because once that activist lawyer sees this, he’ll be forced to respond and further drag your principal. He doesn’t have anything to lose but stands to gain more—so consider how this rebuttal benefits Obi.
