NIPOST: Nigerians To Pay $80 Duty For Every Package Sent To US by Newsgeek24(op): 4:52am On Aug 30, 2025
Nigerians will now pay $80 or its naira equivalent for every package sent to the US, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) said on Friday, News360 Nigeria reports.

NIPOST, in a circular, said the move would take effect from August 29, 2025 but disclosed that letters and documents would be exempted from the mandatory prepaid customs fee.

It explained that the development followed a US Executive Order which suspended de minimis exemptions for all postal shipments worldwide.

The agency said, “With effect from August 29, 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States, except for letters and documents, will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria”.

It stated, “Global logistics operations are also being affected, as airline and cargo carriers adopt more cautious measures in handling US-bound shipments. This may extend both transit and processing times, potentially resulting in delivery delays. All US-bound shipments will additionally undergo Customs checks at the destination.

“NIPOST is actively engaging with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and our airline partners to minimise service disruptions and safeguard customer experience,” the circular read partly.

“We reassure our customers that NIPOST remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services despite this global regulatory

While you may argue that it comes from a recent U.S. Executive order that scrapped the duty-free exemption for lower-value shipments, and NIPOST is simply implementing it, applying a flat $80 fee hits ordinary Nigerians and small businesses the hardest. $80 charge on every US-bound parcel ls excessive.
It raises questions of fairness and proportionality. Why should someone sending a package worth $30 still pay $80 in “prepaid duty”? Policies like this stifle trade, discourage diaspora connections, and worsen inequality.
Global compliance is one thing, but punishing low-value senders is another. At the very least, there should be a tiered or value-based system instead of this blanket charge. I still say they are trying to make money off Nigerians on every opportunity and have no mercy for ordinary Nigerians

It's a stupid and wicked policy at the same time.

If you are retaliating, you should make it difficult for Americans or people in America to send to Nigeria and NOT the other way round.

Correct because it cannot be any other way. I engage in international trade so I am up to speed with regulations affecting our trading zone which includes USA.

De menimis exemption allowed good of value under $800.00 USD to enter the USA free of duty payment. Trump has now cancelled that meaning all good entering the USA now attracts duty payment.

Though a general policy, the ruling is primarily targeting China as Trump and his policymakers feel Chinese businesses and good are gaining too much penetration into the USA.

The reasoning is that Americans will look inwards for their purchase of goods if items below $800.00 USD, unlike before, now attract considerable import duty.

You are correct that it is receiver that must pay because it is duty owed to the USA Government by those in the USA who have bought goods from overseas. Meaning the $80.00 must be paid by the receiver of the goods in USA and not sender.

All VAT, Duty, taxes etc on goods are paid for by buyer/receiver of goods and not seller/sender of goods.

Season of hikes across board. Government leading he charge. It is clear they don't fear inflation. It is clear they know it is not a criteria Nigerians take serious when deciding the future of how they will be governed.

Said it the very day gasoline subsidies was removed on this forum. That inflation will not only spread to grip the entire economy in an alligator death roll, but once that rock has been sent in motion downhill, it will continue to crush everything before it.

Obviously by next year 80 dollars will no longer be sufficient because everything NIPOST needs to operate will have overtaken this cost hike and they too will have to raise it to 100, 150, or 200 dollars.

I said that removal of subsidy was like a surgeon opening up a patient and removing the cancer but is now at a loss as to how to put the organs back in place.

The question this government has failed to answer is. What was the plan to fight inflation and why wasn't it initiated the very moment the cancer of subsidy was removed.
