Correct because it cannot be any other way. I engage in international trade so I am up to speed with regulations affecting our trading zone which includes USA.

De menimis exemption allowed good of value under $800.00 USD to enter the USA free of duty payment. Trump has now cancelled that meaning all good entering the USA now attracts duty payment.

Though a general policy, the ruling is primarily targeting China as Trump and his policymakers feel Chinese businesses and good are gaining too much penetration into the USA.

The reasoning is that Americans will look inwards for their purchase of goods if items below $800.00 USD, unlike before, now attract considerable import duty.

You are correct that it is receiver that must pay because it is duty owed to the USA Government by those in the USA who have bought goods from overseas. Meaning the $80.00 must be paid by the receiver of the goods in USA and not sender.

All VAT, Duty, taxes etc on goods are paid for by buyer/receiver of goods and not seller/sender of goods.

Inflation rate in the US is single digit. It means nothing to them. The issue is here in Nigeria. 80 dollars in 2023 was N56,000. Today it is more than double that while value of the naira in real terms has halved making the real cost compared to 2023 equivalent to something like N170,000.

The problem is here and the problem is with this government's inability to stem inflation.

Thanks for posting this. Everything you said is 100% correct. The government of the day is desperately looking for money to fund their renewed "hopelessness".
I personal package sent from the US to a friend was recently charged N160k plus as customs duty. No matter how much he argued that the value is just $30, nobody listened. A package weighing less than 1kg.
Nipost is not fit for purpose and what they dont realise is that many people will simply stop using their services.

I don't see why this is an issue that Nigerians should be worried about. Especially for businesses. Just add the $80 to your cost and continue your business.

How is this a problem for Nigerians. An average Nigerian don't send stuff to the US regularly except they have an export business. So it's those living in the US that will bear the cost.
