Over 13 residents have drowned in a river while fleeing from gunmen in Birnin Magaji ward of Zamfara state.

The gunmen were said to have attacked two communities in Birnin Magaji on Friday.

During the attack, some members of the communities escaped to board a boat to flee to a nearby riverbank.

Residents told Reuters that there was only a single boat available, which was overloaded with fleeing residents.

Shehu Mohammed, a health worker in Birnin Magaji, told Reuters that his elder son and nieces were among those who died in the boat

“My eldest son and two other nieces were among the 13 people who died when the boat was heavily overloaded with people,” Mohammed said.

Maidamma Dankilo, the district head of Birnin Magaji, said 13 people have been confirmed dead, 22 rescued, and 22 others still missing.

There has been an uptick in gunmen attacks on Zamfara communities lately.

Last Saturday, gunmen killed two residents and abducted at least 100, in Gamdum Mallam and Ruwan Rana villages of Bukkuyum LGA in Zamfara.

In early August, gunmen raided several communities in Kauran Namoda LGA, killing 24 people, injuring 16, and abducting 144.

In July, bandits reportedly killed 33 kidnap victims in Banga town after collecting a ransom of N50 million.

There was a time in the history of this country. Just a few decades ago. Niger Delta militant groups became very notorious. The were committing all manners of crimes, from kidnapping, armed robbery, pipeline vandalism..........e.t.c, e.t.c while this was happening, the North never had what is being experienced as banditry or Boko Haram.

The Federal Government ended up sitting on a round table with the Niger Delta militant groups and today we can see all see.

God have mercy

This is same state where our Minister for Defence, Bello Mettawale is from.
If he can't secure his own people, people whom he is their former governor, I wonder how he is securing other part of the countyry.

Gen. Christopher Musa, has used position as Chief of Defence (CDS) to secure his own people, but Mettawale has been sitting in Abuja without doing anything

People dying like flies everyday.
We read about it in the news like tales by moonlight. No one cares to know why things are going wrong … no one cares if things are going wrong

There are some states in this country that rarely make news for a good reason. This zamfara happens to be one.

Abdul, we knew all these while that all of you support what Bokoharam and bandits are doing, mostly when it doesn’t come near you.

But we choose to play along as if we didn’t know.

The ideology of BokoHaram and bandits is completely different from Niger Delta militants. Niger Delta militants fought for resource control and environmental pollution from oil exploration/exploitation while Boko Haram and Bandits are fighting for implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria. They said Western education is Haram. Since they are motivated by religion (Quran) no amount of negotiation/amnesty can stop them.

Helinues is strangely absent from this thread despite the tragedy of losing such a large number of people while trying to escape bandits attack but the moment it involves the south east, his kini must stand while he writes long epistles about Obi's voice cool

What a painful way to die.

These bandits get their inspiration from Houthi rebels, Hezbollah, ISIS, Hamas and other violent groups in the middle east.
