Press Release

SOSG to Encourage Qur’anic Memorization Among Pupils

Gov. Ahmed Aliyu has reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to create an enabling environment that will encourage Qur’anic memorization among children in Sokoto State.

He gave the assurance at the graduation ceremony of 111 memorizers of the Glorious Qur’an from the Sokoto State branch of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation.

Gov. Aliyu noted that encouraging Qur’anic memorization among children will help raise a generation that upholds the good teachings of Islam in line with the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

According to him, his administration has placed Islamic propagation as a top priority, ranking second only to security in his Nine-point Smart Agenda.

“We have awarded contracts for the renovation of 65 Jumu’at Mosques, out of which 25 had since been completed and 15 successfully commissioned.

"We have also introduced monthly cash allocations to all our Jumu’at Mosques, ranging from N300,000 to N500,000 depending on their category.

"In addition, monthly allowances had been introduced for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across the state to support them in the discharge of their duties,” the Governor said.

Gov. Aliyu further directed the school management to identify a land suitable for the establishment of its permanent site and forward the proposal to the state government for necessary action.

He congratulated the graduands for successfully memorizing the Holy Qur’an and prayed that their knowledge would benefit the society.

In his remarks, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar commended Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi for his foresight in establishing the foundation, which continues to train young people in Qur’anic memorization.

He also praised the contributions of scholars (Ulamas) in promoting Islamic ideals and peaceful coexistence in the state and the country at large.

Also speaking, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, represented by Dr. Aminu Sufi, urged parents to encourage their children to memorize the Holy Qur’an, noting that it will benefit them both in this world and the hereafter.

He also commended the Sokoto State Government for consistently prioritizing Islamic affairs.

Similarly, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Dr. Lawal Liman, praised the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation and announced a donation of N10 million to the graduands, N10 million to the organizers of the ceremony, and N2 million plus food items to the school management.

He promised to continue supporting the foundation in its mission of training young Qur’an memorizers.

In his address, the school proprietor, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, represented by Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, explained that the school, which began in Bauchi, had expanded to other states to enable children to memorize the Qur’an within four years.

He emphasized that the initiative aims to keep children in a structured learning environment rather than roaming the streets begging.

He expressed optimism that if such schools are established across the North, they would greatly help in addressing the menace of street begging among children.

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi later led the graduating pupils in reciting some selected verses from the Qur’an.

At the event, the Sokoto State Government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, donated N20,000 and clothing materials to each of the 111 graduands.

The epochal ceremony was rounded off with the presentation of prizes to the graduating students.

Misplaced priorities, what about taking care of your almajiris?

Building a rehabilitation centre for your almajiris, to prevent them from being influenced by poverty into banditry etc...an untrained indoctrinated mind in poverty is a recipe for trouble.

Sokoto, is that what you want X3? This is supposed to be a good gesture from Mr governor tht may breed up more disaster in the future than commendation we all expect. For fairness, you must include other religions too because it is the money and tax payers of all the citizens in the state you are using to favour one religion above the others. This is Islamization agenda in core practice which may backfire. You are turning every imam and their deputies to a civil servant getting lecturer salariés in the state.

However, Mr governor; take note that you are planting the seed and laying the foundation of terrorism and banditry in the future, don't come and blame federal government in the future. You are creating avoidable financial burden to a backward state. Note that this approach lay yield disaster in the future if not we'll handled because it Muslim community will now see it as their right to get monthly salary, once they are owned, it becomes a problem that may groom disgruntled éléments in the future.

Now, imam and deputy imam for every mosque will now be a position they will be killing themselves to achieve because state government is indirectly planting seed of future crisis indirectly. Some of those that can not get to that position may become opposition and even join terror group to attack mosques. Mr governor; don't blame federal government or other religion later in future when the fruit of the seed you are planting today is due for harvest.

It will now look as if government has bought over imams and their deputies tht will no longer be able to speak truth to the government because they are paid on monthly basis

Just in case you are not aware, Sokoto State is one of the poorest state in Nigeria and among the state with the highest number of out-of-school children aka almajiri.

More trees also need to be planted because of the ravaging effects of dry weather and climate change.

Nigeria Politicians are terrible.

You people keep saying the north contributes nothing.

Do you even know the kind of famine that will happen without the harvests from the north?

That's why we keep tasking southern governors to prioritize agriculture to counter what the north contributes. Everytime there has been food scarcity was because something happened in the north.

They contribute a whole lot.

Oh please! As if the same food items couldn't easily be imported from elsewhere, at much lower cost and much higher quality! Nigeria's long-standing, wrong-headed obsession with protectionist measures is the only reason why northern states like Sokoto have any economic relevance whatseover, given their preference for wasting money on subsidising useless activities like Quran memorisation instead of giving their young people skills of use in the modern world.

What benefit to the state is memorisation of quoranic verses ? If i may know.
When other states in the south are using their state fund to create job opportunities to its people.
Now, that you are paying Imams monthly allowances what happen to pastors of churches in the state because they also teach people bible verses memorisation.

Sokoto has always been one of the most inept states in this country, so it is not surprising.

Very diligent in misplaced priorities and unproductive ideas.

Ask the government there how this would aid progress in the state in the coming years, and see them display their paucity of rational thinking.
