The First Dance: Frau Troffea and the Beginning of the Plague In July 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea (or Trauffea) stepped into the street and began to dance. She continued to dance without pause, seemingly unable to stop, until she collapsed from exhaustion. After resting for a while, she got up and resumed her frenzied activity. This strange behaviour lasted for days, and soon others joined her. Within a week, more than 30 people in Strasbourg were similarly afflicted. The dancing plague quickly spread throughout the city, affecting people from all walks of life. Rich and poor, young and old, men and women—all were seized by an uncontrollable urge to dance. Some danced alone, while others formed groups and danced together. The dancing was not limited to daytime hours but continued into the night, often by torchlight. It was said that the dancers’ feet bled and their shoes were worn to shreds, but they did not feel pain. They danced until they collapsed, and then got up and danced again.

The Strange Symptoms of the Dancing Plague The symptoms of the dancing plague were strange and varied. Some dancers were said to have foamed at the mouth and screamed, while others laughed uncontrollably. Some were said to have had visions and experienced ecstatic states. Some dancers claimed that they could only be cured by music and singing, while others sought the help of religious figures. The Dancing Plague was not limited to Strasbourg but spread to other cities in the region, including Colmar, Basel, and Frankfurt. In some places, it lasted for several months, and in others, it burned out quickly. The number of dancers was estimated to be in the thousands, and it is said that hundreds of people died as a result of exhaustion or heart failure.

Mass Hysteria One of the most popular theories about the Dancing Plague is that it was caused by mass hysteria. Mass hysteria is a condition in which a group of people share a common delusion or anxiety. This theory suggests that the dancers were caught up in a kind of trance and that their frenzied behaviour was a result of their collective belief in the power of dance. This theory is supported by the fact that the Dancing Plague was a group phenomenon, with many people dancing together in the streets. It is also possible that the dancers were under a great deal of stress, which may have contributed to the development of mass hysteria. Tarantism Perhaps the most famous theory about the Dancing Plague is that it was caused by a psychological disorder known as tarantism. Tarantism was a common condition in southern Italy at the time, and it was believed to be caused by the bite of a venomous spider. Its symptoms included convulsions, sweating, and a frenzied desire to dance. The cure for tarantism was said to be music and dancing, and it was believed that the sufferer could only be cured by dancing to a particular type of music. |

As for me personally i feel it was a case of demon possession. Lets not forget this incident that happened in jesus time MARK 5; 1-20 5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” 9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. 2000 pigs died as a result of the possession

Mshad662:And you think you are the first Christian in the world. You think there were no Christians in 1500. You just wake up to demonize everything. Do you know what the first 100 cases of Malaria looked like? If you were there back then you would have said the victims committed sins that made their body burn and they should confess their sins. Remove the cloud of religious myopia from your face. |

AllBlack:The world then was a mess. As far as Europe was concerned. Everywhere smelled. Horse dung was all over the place, the streets were inches deep in it. Sanitation wasn't a concept known to them at the time. Clean water was scarce and beer was the closest they came to liquids without impurities. The food was bland and mostly tasteless. Bread and meat was what was available. For the most part, the architecture was fine and we have a number of them available today. |

Mshad662:Theories for the Cause: Mass Hysteria : A leading theory suggests that the dancing was a form of mass psychogenic illness, fueled by the high levels of stress, superstition, and famine in the region at the time. Ergot Poisoning: Another theory proposes that the dancers consumed rye bread contaminated with ergot, a hallucinogenic fungus that can cause involuntary muscle spasms and hallucinations. Supernatural Beliefs: At the time, some people believed the dancing was caused by a curse from Saint Vitus, a religious figure associated with the affliction of dancing manias. |
