A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon under the Mabushi Bridge in Abuja, where a family of three a man, his wife, and their son lost their lives following a violent encounter with touts, popularly known as ‘Agberos’.

According to eyewitness accounts, the family was driving in a Toyota Highlander after purchasing a brand new refrigerator when they were chased from the Berger axis by three touts. The touts reportedly forced their way into the vehicle and began dragging the steering wheel with the driver.

“In the process of struggling for control, the car rammed into the pillar under the bridge before plunging into the drainage,” one eyewitness told our correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident. The impact killed all three occupants of the vehicle instantly.

A green-colour Abuja taxi parked nearby was also hit and severely damaged.

The chaos that followed sparked outrage among passersby, who lynched one of the touts.

However, police operatives from the Mabushi Division arrived to rescue two of the touts as one of the suspects was killed by the mob, while the remaining two sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the National Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased family of three have since been deposited at the mortuary.

There were conflicting reports as to whether a child was among the casualties, but multiple witnesses confirmed the presence of a boy in the car.

Expressing his anger, one resident identified as Moses said, “Abuja citizens are tired of ‘Agberos’ and they should be flushed from the society. Now, a family of three is gone. Are you saying I should have a car and still pay for a commercial vehicle to transport my things?”

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Police regarding the incident, which occurred a few minutes to 1:00 pm on Wednesday.

The man should have just stopped and given them something the moment they grabbed his steering wheel. I'm not supporting what the touts did to him. I'm seriously against them. But when you're in a lawlessness country like Nigeria where touts would be threatening people's lives and police would be at the next junction extorting from those who survived the touts, you'd have to apply wisdom.

He was in the car with his wife and kid(s) how much was the money they were demanding for that he had to gamble with his family?

I remember one time I dropped a friend off at Anthony under bridge, he wanted to climb the hill to access the express so I moved in to drop him off. As he came down and left, one rugged tout started running towards me, I wanted to zoom off then I noticed he carried a very big stone, I just stopped and gave him N500 yes you heard me right. Five hundred naira which he collected and walked away. Imagine if I had stubbornly tried to zoom off and he had shattered my windshield, it would have cost me up to 200k to replace it. But I applied wisdom and paid just 500 and left peacefully.

We should learn how to apply wisdom. Everything shouldn't be about aggression cos these touts have nothing to lose. I've seen them pull down a conductor from a moving bus. They're ready to fight and die. So dragging with them isn't a wise option.

May their souls rest in peace.

Those agbero guys are very notorious in Abuja recently.
I injured one with a screw driver in my car last month, I stopped to ask him for direction and next thing he was dragging my car key with me.
I immediately removed a screwdriver in my Glovebox and stabbed him on his hand

Saying he must pay. I have never seen those tout before and I keep to wonder if this is our Nigeria as a country going to be going forward. Able men, smelling drugs and alcohol will come and ask me to pay because I want to move one small assets in street of Lagos?

This is indeed sad. This seems to be new found behavior of Agberos in Abuja lately. A guy Police man blasted one Agberos last month to death on the express way when he tried to drag his keys.

Is Abuja an open air psychiatric ward ? Why would Wike allow touts to roam freely ?
