Good evening Nairalanders,

Please i just checked my transmission fluid and this is how the it's looking like.

It's just a toks corolla 2012, just arrived last week.

Is it due for change?

Re: My Transmission Fluid Color by Dwarfgod: 7:51pm On Sep 04, 2025
Does it shift smoothly? If yes, do a single drain and refill with original Toyota gear oil. If you can't afford original leave the gear oil as it is.

If it doesn't shift smoothly, do it twice or thrice drain and refill. Driving 50miles in between before draining.

Cheers 🍻

Yes it's still shifts smoothly, I just want to know if it's due

Secondly, which of the below attached fluid is recommended for 2012 corolla

Use the below chart as a guide ... You will need to change the fluid soon. But you can still manage for maybe another 2 months depending on your driving conditions.......

Please use the original Toyota WS to be on the safe side.

Note: when changing transmission fluid, please make sure the environment is clean from dirt to avoid contamination ......

Your transmission fluid is now looking brown ( if your phone camera is good), you should change it, that colour shows the fluid isn't in the best state, get the original recommended fluid, drain and refill, but do not do a transmission flush, just a drain and refill.
When I bought my car Tokunbo, I checked the transmission fluid and it was looking blackish, I drained and refilled that same day, I've done two drains and refills twice after the first time (I just felt like), it keeps your transmission in good health.
Many are scared and will advise not to touch your transmission fluid as long as it shifts good, what's the use of an oil change when your engine is filled with sludge or has seized from shortage of oil 🤔, the same goes for your transmission, when you begin to have issues due to contaminated fluid, you can only hope a drain and refill will fix it, by then you're not servicing the transmission, you're trying to correct a DAMAGE.

Your camera angle isn't doing justice to the color, nevertheless, drain and refill.

It's always best to start counting from your own oil change.

While I totally Understand where you coming from it’s not entirely correct

So would break it down

In his case for instance, he needs to immediately do a drain and refill with the recommended Toyota Fluid. Only Recommended Fluid no substitute or alternative.

If it has a burnt smell and the mileage is over 150k miles and it’s never been done before. Then what you saying can happen, because the fluid has broken down to the point where it’s not a lubricant anymore but rather has broken materials inside it that helps prevent the transmission from slipping , at this point changing it could do more harm than good, because after changing it the transmission could slip.

But if it’s less than 150k miles and transmission shifts fine no issues and it Doesn’t have a burnt smell do a simple drain and refill and the do same every 40k miles going forward

But in all you do never ever ever do a fluid flush

And go for a reputable workshop not a Kazeem please, it might be more expensive but transmissions are very sensitive and require top professionals with the right tools

Don’t cut corners in this please .

Hope I was able to clearly break it down and help.

We need the Year, model, make, and all. But for best information check your owners manual . If you don’t have one it’s the Toyota ATF-WS (World Standard) transmission fluid

That’s the green bottle

Absolutely correct . Never follow manufacturers life time fluid . All fluids breakdown and nothing like life time fluid, changing your fluid at 100,000 miles is highly recommended, a simple drain and refill never a flush .

Remember when they say lifetime they actually mean the warranty of the vehicle which is around 5-8 years mark roughly 150k miles . But if you intend on getting to 300,000+ miles or more you need to do a drain and refill or prepare to buy a new transmission.

So always ahead of your fluid changes not just transmission but Coolant , Brake , engine , differential fluids , power steering fluid if you have one. Would always make your components last way longer and give you peace of mind always .

Yh sighted it, the green one is good. Ensure it’s the OEM and not a fake you get.

Buy from a reputable store, or don’t know if Total filling station sells some. Or the Toyota place at around I think Ladipo area or so.

What type of ATF can I use for my Hyundai Elantra 2012? The recommended is ATF SP-IV (often Part No. 04500-00115) but doubt I can get original in the market, so which product from a trusted brand like OandO or Total is equivalent?
