what has this got to do with money laundering?

if all the anti money laundering laws and policies the cbn has in place cannot stop money laundering, is it by giving people tax ID that money laundering will stop?
Yes it helps reduces money laundry. unexplained wealth can be easily confisticated . i would even go further and require that beneficial owners of all assets in the country and peoples tax record are available to anyone in the public without any fees or need for freeedom of info request.

a very bad idea

this govt provides no services to people and is taxing the hell out of people while monopolizing all revenues (only to polithiefcians, APC members, Fed State and Local Govt civil servants)

the rest of the population gets no direct payments from this evil govt

it is evil

This man is a big thief, we warned you all, he is very greedy and will not stop until all people leave the banking system and start moving cash

put your money in crypto and stay away from this evil govt
Tinubu this tinubu that...40 more characters needed.
Who is your local govt chairman? What has he achieved so far? What about the councilor representing your ward?? 99% of nigerians dont "have any business" with these officials.
How about if you pay your taxes directly to your lgc? Would we still be non-chalant about their roles?
The more taxes we pay at the local level the more we hold the local offcials to account. Your water board, community electrification, inner city raods, public schools, hospitals, farms and commodities markets, community security, etc should be functioning better if we hold those guys responsible. That is basically what this tax regime is about, more revenue and thus more responsibility to the local govt. Its not entirely bad.

Tinubu is on overdrive to forcibly dip his hands into every Nigerians pockets agbero-style. That is the only way he knows how to generate funds, no other ideas.

A government that provides absolutely nothing to Nigerians who pump their own water and provide their own power with generators and Solar installation, has no business putting a gun to the head of Nigerians to ask them for taxes.

Under Ghadaffi, oil-producing countries like Libya paid their citizens monthly allowances, paid 50% for their cars, provided free water and power supply.

But Nigeria's Oil money remains monopolized by Tinubu (who is the Oil minister) and co., yet they still ask for more money to loot from Nigerian pockets. They are taxing your blood and the air you breath. They want to asphyxiate Nigerians out of existence. Are Nigerians slaves?

If Nigerians will not be allowed to live peacefully, even after allowing them (politicians) to monopolize oil wealth. Then we must radically find alternative ways of keeping our hard earned money away from eyes of greed of Mr Ojuyobo or even, push this government out of power, so we can breath.

Nigerians, is it not time for a revolution?

May this scourge never go beyond 2025..
So you want to develop a country where everyone who si resident within it's borders and under the sovereignty of the federal republic is not tax compliant and registered with a national identity number.

I don't know of any civilised nation that doesn't maintain that as a minimum standard. Where I reside you can't even apply for a job if you don't have a national ID number which doubles as your tax and revenue number, my bank account, passport, any business I run, my voters register even my property levy is noted against that ID, my driver's licence I don't even think it's possible to exist without it.

Let them start with business people and entrepreneurs first. I actually thought about it yesterday, something like EIN for business in USA.

That would boost online sales as most sellers would need to registered which their EIN which much tally with their names on record
How would it boost online sales?

Nobody anywhere in the world likes to pay tax, even government officials in developed countries also dodge taxes until they are caught, so waiting for everybody to trust the government on accountability and service delivery means they will wait forever and keep on giving excuses for non-development or provision of basic amenities. Voluntary compliance does not exist anywhere!
Abi o. Billionaires and popular musicians, footballers always go to jail for tax evation. Nobody likes taxes and no Go fails to collect taxes except Nigeria. We were growing up we use to see tax men roaming the streets asking for evidence of tax payment but not anymore because politicians prefer sharing oil money and never care about real development. Exactly. Tax is return on investment in the people.
You cannot demand for returns where you did not invest.
Citizens happily pay tax when thier taxes work for them, not where it is primarily looted and used to fund the insanely extravagant lifestyle of crooked politicians

While the government’s intention to strengthen tax compliance is understandable, making a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) compulsory for basic financial services such as banking, insurance, and stock investments could end up punishing ordinary Nigerians more than it benefits the economy.

Millions of Nigerians are still outside the tax net, and many operate in the informal sector where income is unstable and poorly documented. Forcing them to obtain a Tax ID before they can open a bank account or access financial services could push people further away from the formal economy, defeating the very goal of broadening the tax base.

Instead of compulsion, government should first build trust and simplicity in the tax system. Nigerians already feel burdened by multiple taxes and levies, often without seeing the benefits in infrastructure, healthcare, or security. Until accountability and service delivery improve, making Tax IDs mandatory for financial inclusion may look less like reform and more like another barrier.

True progress will come from policies that encourage voluntary compliance, supported by technology, awareness, and incentives — not by shutting the door of the banking hall against those who are already struggling to survive.
Tell me ONE country in the Whole Wide World where all the taxable citizens pay tax voluntarily.
Just ONE Abeg, not TWO.

Government collects taxes and provides non of these. I provide all these myself. The taxes I pay has no benefit to me. Do you know what the taxes you and I pay are used for?

Your tax pays for the highest paid senators and house of assembly members on earth.

Your tax money pays for the over 7 trillion naira of budget padding that senators and house of rep members have added to the budget and signed by the president this year.

Your tax pays for the 1 billion Naira monthly that every senator collects from the president. Your tax will pay for the new salary increase that the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Allocation Committee (RMFAC) says every political office holder deserves.

Your tax money pays for the 90 billion Naira Yahaya Bello stole from Kogi state and is walking freely around the president. Your tax money pays for the over 400 million dollars 34 state governors spent last year junketing around the globe looking for foreign investors and got zero returns as investment.

Your tax money pays for the over 55 billion naira budgeted each year for the Aso Rock clinic that doesn't even have paracetamol available. Your tax money pays for the 3.5 billion naira budgeted for cutlery in Aso Rock each year.

Your tax money paid for the 400 million naira wristwatch the presidents son wears around. Your tax paid for the 195 million naira Patek Phillipe wristwatch Sanwo Olu wore to Davido's wedding.

Your tax money pays the salary of the police and the soldiers who call you a bloody civilian and beat you up at the slightest provocation. Police and soldiers who run away from bandits when they come to attack you.

Your tax money does all these and does nothing for you in return. Yet these same locusts, led by their principal in Aso Rock, want more from you.
So maybe now when civil society calls on Nigerians to come and protest against mismanagement of resources by leaders, many of you folks will come out.

Nigerians that are suffering like to just complain on the pages of social media, but citizens of other countries who are even doing far far better than us like Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Turkey. They come out to protest against Misrule and embezzlement of taxes. But no, when they call in Nigeria, citizens prefer to watch Netflix or play football on the streets.

That's what those quotes Dubai and Saudi and Libya and all that nonsense don't realise. Do those folks think a population of 250 million people is play? Qatar has a population of about 3 million people and only about 800k of those are real. Indigenous Qataris. The remaining are expatriates

Be reminded that this government did not increase any single tax. All it is doing is ensuring the mechanisms are in place to faithfully implement what it has failed to implement all these years. So in actual facts you guys have been ripping off the government for decades by not paying what you should pay.

The painful thing is that the rich are the ones who always want to evade taxes, while only the working class (lower-income and middle-income earners) pay taxes consistently all over the world.

And as for Nigerians, like someone said, they just want to enjoy the gains of capitalism in a socialist manner grin
