When I first visited Abiriba Town in Ohafia LGA, Abia State, I was amazed by its beauty and development. Walking through the streets of Abiriba feels like strolling inside a Government Reserved Area (GRA). The town is lined with well-structured mansions, tastefully designed homes, and modern amenities that rival those of big cities. Many visitors are often surprised to learn that Abiriba is not a local government headquarters, not a state capital, and not even a regional capital—yet, it looks and feels like one. Abiriba is widely celebrated as one of the richest communities in Africa, not just because of wealth but because of its culture of hospitality, unity, and collective progress. The people are warm, welcoming, and proud of their heritage. They understand that development is not something to wait for from the government; it is something that can be achieved through community effort. This is a philosophy that runs deep in Igboland. After the civil war, when the East was left devastated, the Igbo people did not fold their arms waiting for government intervention. They turned to self-help and communal development. Through town unions, age grades, and family associations, resources were pooled together to rebuild schools, roads, hospitals, and even markets. Wealthy sons and daughters of the land were encouraged to invest in their hometowns, and those investments transformed many villages into what now looks like mini-cities. In Abiriba, this spirit is very much alive. Successful indigenes, whether in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, or abroad, always return home to build not just magnificent houses for their families, but also community projects—town halls, boreholes, road networks, scholarships for young people, and even private industries that create jobs. This collective drive, often described with the Igbo saying “onye aghala nwanne ya” (let no one be left behind), is the foundation of their prosperity. Just like in other rapidly developing Igbo towns, this is a testament that the Igbo love themselves, love their land, and do everything to ensure that their ancestral homes remain developed. Unlike many who abandon their roots, the Igbo plough their wealth back into their states of origin. This principle, popularly known as “Aku Ruo Uno” (let wealth reach home), is at the heart of their progress. It explains why towns like Abiriba continue to flourish, standing as shining examples of what self-determination and communal love can achieve. --

Abiriba: The Igbo Town That Built Itself..it's just a village just like other villages in Nigeria but was self built from tarring for roads to other things just the way other Igbo build their villages and cities

Just like many other villages in the East, Abriba is developing massively and the word village is now a misnomer so I would call this a community or town but it is still a village in Igbo standards

Ndigbo are doing excellently well more than so many other region.. If you go to some villages in Imo state, the type of houses you will see there are the types that you will in Abuja and Lagos cities. You don't see brown roofs like in Ibadan and Ogun state. |

Empty houses and roads everywhere. More than half of the population are in the West and only come home during festive periods. Now, it’s easy to agree with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations, who deducted from available statistics that, goats will outnumber humans in South East Nigeria by 2032. |

Abiriba is just a village for retired old rich men. It will not be a thriving place, because there’s no work force or population there. If you’re walking on the streets there, it’s like a ghost town. Even the mansions are quiet. |

CoronaVirusPro:They are using credit more than others. Anambra has 390 banks and 749 hotels. Oyo has 1033 hotels. I don't know the number of banks in the whole Oyo state. Ibadan alone has 203. Onitsha has 137 alone. Osun has 224 banks. Kano has around 240 banks. The presence of the banks show they use credit a lot in Anambra. It is one of the most industrialized states |

| Re: Abiriba: The Igbo Town That Built Itself by CJStarz: 9:32pm On Sep 05, 2025 |
kettykin:Granted , Abiriba is a beautiful place because of the beautiful edifices erected there in but it is not a commercial centre as Nnewi and Aba. Nnewi people transformed their community into a commercial nerve center but Abiriba is just place where the indigenes go home to rest after hustling in Aba Ngwa, d commercial heartbeat of Abia state. My point is this, despite how accommodating Ngwa people are to Abiriba people and ndi Ogboo at large, they still end up despising the average Ngwa man. This should stop |
