Thanks for your input. You have indeed said it all.

Dogalmighty17:
NUPENG must not be allowed to blackmail and threaten the government and the economy. Dangote refinery is a private entity and reserves the right to enforce internal conditions as it deems fit.

The only organisation that may even be considered to have a say here is the Petroleum and Tanker Drivers Association of Nigeria and they have told their members to ignore NUPENG and the strike.

NUPENG wants to force unionisation in a private refinery and by so doing will want to dictate to Dangote how to relate with drivers under its employ. That is a no-no. Did NUPENG go after Greenfield gas? Has NUPENG gone after Nigerian breweries, coca cola or Guinness? Does NUPENG dictate to any of these companies that they must enforce unionisation of their drivers? Why is NUPENG insisting that Dangote drivers must unionise?

Dangote has thousands of truck drivers in his sugar, salt, flour and cement companies. Why did NUPENG not bring up the issue of their unionisation all this while? Is it because NUPENG has read the hand writing on the wall and knows that Dangote is about to render them irrelevant? Dangote should call thier bluff.

NUPENG didn't down tools to force government to fix the terrible roads the unions drivers have been forced to use all these years. NUPENG kept looking the other way as hundreds of its drivers lost their lives in the course of delivering products across the country. Now NUPENG claims to have found its voice? Dangote should crush them. NUPENG has held Nigerians hostage for too long.

NUPENG is the one forcing unionisation onto Dangote truckers. Not the other way around.
Get your facts right.

Why did NUPENG not go on strike for Federal Government to fix the moribund refineries? Is it now that they're going to dictate to Dangote how to run his business?

Why did the stupid NLC not issue red alert when ASUU or NARD threatened to go on strike? Why did the psycho NLC not issue red alert when ASUU went on strike for 8 months and kept students at home in 2022 for 8 months? Why did NLC mot go on solidarity strike? Why did NUPENG not go on solidarity strike ?

We know what is happening. Dangote is about to close their shops anf they're crying foul.

It was the place of NUPENG and NLC to have pressured the govt to fix or build new refineries. Now that someone is doing the thing they avoided or refused to do, it's now a problem.

If na me be dangote, I wouldn't listen to anybody and I'll sack any staff who goes on strike.

That's not how freedom of association works. You can associate with whomever you want. Why will a missionary school not allow a Muslim student use hijab since the student has the right to associate with whoever she wants? They can resign from working for Dangote and go to anywhere they are free to associate.

It's not a constitutional thing, if it was, NUPENG will be taking Dangote to court by now. If the drivers working for Dangote don't want to be members of NUPENG, it's within their right as well. But they know they can't win in court, that's the reason they are using the strong-arm tactics of going on strike to hold the country hostage and force hardship on everyone else.

Dangote is a private entity. It's like ASUU striking because private universities are not allowing their members join union. How does that make sense?

Now the obidients will be happy at this kind of news.

They don't even know the implications of this on the Nigeria economy.

They also don't know that Dangote is a private entity and the petroleum sector is deregulated.

But they think the strike will distabilize Tinubu's government. But it will not.

Now you will see bentenny, raccoon, mrvitalis and givedemwotowo happily abusing the government on matters that concern private entity.

To them, the country should burn.

But to us, Nigeria shall be great again grin

I just read the link you posted. We are well and truly f**ked aren't we? Does Dangote have enough products in storage to last till November? Or will we have to rely majorly on imports again.
Now imagine those emotional and myopic Nigerians calling on the government to put a halt to fuel importation because of Dangote, where is our energy security if that happens?

People talk about US, UK , China, Japan, Singapore and France but failed to talk about how things are done there and about sacrifice paid by some people before those countries get to their present level.

The freedom of Association gives individual the liberty to associate with any individual, organization and association within the concept of Law. It is not by force or by coercion. An organization cannot force an individual to accept an employment terms. If the terms are suitable to the employee he or she accepts or rejects it. A Union fights for the wellbeing of its members but cannot force employee to be its member. A Union that will not pay salary cannot impose its conditions on the organization that took loans to establish a paid employment.

Yaradua caused this problem. OBASANJO fought a tough battle to sell Refineries, Yaradua came, he played to gallery to discredit OBASANJO Government. The problem is still haunting Nigeria till date.

Why should Dangote Petroleum prevent staff from joining their respective unions?

The staff are free to join unions and that is the norm in the petroleum industry.

The Union is a pressure group that has it's own advantage and protects staff interest across companies in the industry.
Re: Dangote: FG Calls Emergency Meeting To Avert NUPENG/PETROAN nationwide strike by professorPABX: 8:29pm On Sep 07, 2025
ASUU cannot force its members in Private Universities to shutdown Private Universities because Private Universities pay Salaries and are being funded by the organizations that own the institutions.

NMA or NARD cannot force Doctors in Private Hospitals and Private Universities Teaching Hospitals to stop working. Globally, it is not done. Private institutions fund themselves.

NUPENG should understand that Private Refineries are established with funds from private institutions. They are not under NNPC.

Your first paragraph is not the position of the law in Nigeria
Do some research

Legal Framework Supporting the Right to Unionise in Nigeria:

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended)

Section 40 guarantees freedom of association, which includes the right to form or join trade unions:

“Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons… for the protection of his interests, including the right to form or belong to any trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests.”

The Trade Unions Act (Cap T14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004)

Provides the legal framework for the formation, registration, and regulation of trade unions.

Requires trade unions to be registered with the Registrar of Trade Unions.

Allows workers in the same or similar trades, occupations, or industries to form unions.

International Commitments

Nigeria is a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and has ratified key conventions, including:

ILO Convention No. 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise)

ILO Convention No. 98 (Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining)
What NUPENG needs to do is to take Dangote to court. If they get judgement in their favour then they enforce it against Dangote. How can a union have dispute with a private company and go on national strike. The concept of strike is being abused in this nation.

Thanks for sharing your opinion it is valid
There are others with a different opinion which is equally valid
Maybe it reflects the state of the confidence in our justice system
I do not see your point about private company
Are you saying a national strike would be justified if it were not private and there would be no need to go to court
I am not aware of any provision in labour law that creates different playing fields for strikes for private versus public companies
In short it is not relevant

Also I would suggest you actually read what you quoted patiently
