A tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning, September 7, 2025, at Borno State University, Maiduguri, when an unidentified man lost his life after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to vandalize an electricity transformer.

Body discovered near transformer

According to eyewitness reports, the man’s lifeless body was discovered beside the transformer within the university premises. Officers of the Borno State Police Command, in collaboration with the State Fire Service, quickly moved to evacuate the remains to a nearby hospital.

Police confirm electrocution

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, revealed that preliminary investigations showed the victim was electrocuted while tampering with the facility.

“The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on 7/9/2025, the body of an unidentified male was found near a transformer in Borno State University. Findings indicate he was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize electrical installations,” ASP Daso stated.

He further noted that a full-scale investigation is ongoing to uncover more details surrounding the incident.

Police warn against vandalism

The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, used the opportunity to issue a stern warning against vandalism and sabotage of public infrastructure. He emphasized that such criminal acts not only disrupt essential services but also endanger lives and compromise community safety.

The Police Command reassured the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially around critical installations, to security agencies.

Rising cases of vandalism in Nigeria

The incident adds to growing concerns over vandalism of public infrastructure in Nigeria, particularly power facilities, which often results in power outages, costly repairs, and tragic loss of life. Authorities continue to stress the importance of community cooperation in protecting essential national assets.
