Owerri City And The Beauty Of Its Airport Road by christopher123(op): 7:10am On Sep 09, 2025
Owerri, the capital of Imo State, has grown from a quiet town into one of the most vibrant cities in Igboland. Known for its hospitality, business opportunities, and lively lifestyle, Owerri today stands as a true picture of Igbo progress and resilience.

And at the heart of this transformation is the Imo Airport Road — the beautiful gateway that welcomes you into the city.

Why Airport Road Matters

It connects Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport directly to the city.

It’s the first impression visitors get — clean, wide, and modern.

Businesses, hotels, and estates are springing up along it.

It’s a symbol of growth — showing that Owerri is ready for the future.

Captured by GFP Drones, the Airport Road today looks like a boulevard of pride — a sign that Owerri is not just developing, but shining.

Owerri: An Igbo Story of Growth 🌍

Just like Onitsha with trade, Aba with industry, and Nnewi with innovation, Owerri is carving its own place as the hub of hospitality and entertainment.

As the Igbo say:
“Ọ bụ mmadụ na-ewu obodo, obodo adịghị ewuwu onwe ya.”
(It is people who build a city; a city does not build itself.)

Owerri is proof of that spirit — built by its people, for its people, and admired by all.

✅ This is Imo Airport Road today in Owerri, as captured by GFP Drones — a road that tells the story of progress and pride.

Nice but, so lonely. It's like there's no activity going on at the airport.

Nice development. That road is really looking nice and smooth especially from the Nigerian Air Force base end till you get to the Sam Mbakwe International airport.

It should interest the reading public that the Owerri Airport was built by the Easterners( men and women of alaigbo ) who generously contributed to get it in place. God bless and continue to rest our forefathers.

I think I prefer the "Before" pics of Assumpta Cathedral roundabout, that "After" flyover is not attractive.

Yes...the Easterners ploughed money, contributed from primary schools to secondary schools and many Igbo rich men irrespective of the state donated to the airport

It was the first State built airport

The way Imo State University (Now ABSU) was the first State University being built

It was a self help efforts of the Igbo to jump start their region after the war !

They tried

It's traffic...that overpass is to curtail the traffic from mainland to new Owerri the development and rapid urbanisation in Owerri is causing lots of traffic and these infrastructure is needed and they should plant palm trees

What is the purpose of painting the partition of the road white color when you don't have a plan of repainting it every 4 whites. What is the need of this usual black and white colours in our roads that defile explanation

Painting raids demarcation white and black usually refers to the practice of marking surfaces, boundaries, or obstacles with alternating black and white stripes (sometimes yellow and black too). The main purposes are:

1. Visibility & Contrast – The alternating colors make the markings stand out under different lighting conditions (day/night, bright/sunny, dim/overcast). Black and white give maximum contrast, ensuring visibility from a distance.

2. Safety & Guidance – Such markings are often used in airfields, military installations, warehouses, and industrial zones to guide movement during normal operations and during raids, blackouts, or low-visibility situations. They help pilots, drivers, and personnel quickly identify edges, boundaries, or obstacles.

3. Demarcation of Sensitive Areas – In military contexts (such as air raid shelters, runways, or protected zones during wartime), black-and-white paint was often used to demarcate safe areas or guide people during emergencies.

4. Psychological Cue – High-contrast stripes also act as a warning pattern (similar to hazard stripes), signaling people to pay attention or exercise caution.

And they will maintain it ... Owerri has a history of neatness

Beautiful.

I think some South East and Northern States appear to be paying far more attention in planning and beautifying their state capitals.

Most South West cities are laggards in these areas.

I agree especially North West and South East! AKWA IBOM, RIVERS are still trying and Lagos is still trying also

I don't know what they are actually doing in EKITI,OSUN,OYO, ONDO..they aren't in picture or news mostly in urban planning or rejuvenation....maybe they will get there

Hope is really picking up . I hope owerri bounces back as the clubbing and party capital of West Africa. Hope please learn from the mistakes of Enugu and Abia and build real smart schools in each of the senatorial zones that will be the envy of the world , smart schools that will have AI laboratories, optic fiber internet, acoustic music laboratories, tech driven smart schools that will help imo reclaim the top spot in the education ecosystem of Africa.
3 smart schools is enough rather than the comedy playing out in Enugu and Abia

Imo state airport is not located in the capital city. It is located outskirts of the city, in fact in a rural community, so it's expected to be serene.

It was the airport that helped improve the development with that environment.

So don't compare it with Lagos airport road

My sentiments too! You don't go and build such a monstrousity right in front of a city landmark like the Assumpta Cathedral! It's akin to going to build a flyover right in front of St Peters Basillica in Rome or St Pauls in London! You wouldn't even get past the approvals process because you'd be thrown out the moment you present your plans for approval! But here in Nigeria, especially in our south-east, we don't value or appreciate the need for preservation of historical landmarks and views!
