It's there to reduce the twisting modes of the bridge. So basically, that red thing that you see up there(along with the steel cable) does mostly nothing to keep the bridge lifted up(those supports underneath are what does all the heavy lifting), but the trouble with bridges(especially under heavy use) is that they can sometimes enter into resonant modes, the most dangerous of which are twisting modes(where the bridge repeatedly twists about the parallel axis), so, by coupling the flat part of the bridge with the supports, through that tall red post and steel cables most of that twisting force is used to "press down" on the support, thereby reducing bridge twisting.

The construction demands high quality control to meet these objectives.

Exactly the first thing i said when i saw the picture. I'm sure the governors know nothing about cable stay bridges so they go with whatever the engineers present them. If this i'snt the case, then the engineers themselves know nothing about the structural utility of the cables but just affix them for the aesthetic appeal.

These are cable suspended bridges. The cables do the work of holding the load in place, but in the case of the Anambra bridge, the cables do nothing, the pillars do the work, as they are just a few meters apart.

Santiago Calatrava is very much known for that style of design that's my point. In this case, it is very much aesthetic than functional to project contemporary structural design.

Wetin obi do you now my brother! there are different types of investments, physical investments like the flyover and human capital investments! Nobody can make significant difference by trying to do both at the same time. Human capital investments are better than all this flyovers. Human capital investments usually remove people from abject poverty which is always the best investment! That was what obi did during hi tenure... Making a sane business environment of investments... Suspension cables help to reduce vibrations. Vibrations play a major role in the durability and integrity of such structures. Simple mechanics indicate that clearly.

When we pass through old-fashioned bridges, we feel the vibrations.

Experienced engineers will know better than me that cables can vibrate on their own easily. So they will have added the means to dampen the cables' intrinsic vibrations.

The cables look good too.

On which bridge do you experience vibration? Any bridge that vibrates is structurally defective and is about to collapse.
