The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike.

DAILY POST reports that the suspension followed an agreement reached on Tuesday with the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals on the contentious issue of workers’ unionisation.

Several fuel stations across the country were shut down on Tuesday following the two-day industrial action by members of NUPENG.

The strike followed allegations against the Dangote Group, stating that the company denied its employees the right to join recognised labour unions.

At a conciliation meeting convened by the minister, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, both parties held lengthy discussions that produced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja.

The signed MoU read, “That since workers’ unionisation is a right in line with the provisions of the extant laws, the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals agreed to the unionisation of employees of Dangote Refinery and unionization of employees of Petrochemicals, who are willing to unionize.

“That the process of unionization shall commence immediately and be completed within two weeks (9th–22nd September, 2025), and it was agreed that the employer will not set up any other union.

“Arising from the strike notice, no worker or employee of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals will be victimized.”

But Dangote should know that unionism is normal & should not be the reason to hold a nation ransom. Anyways, thank God it is over. We move. I already even bought 2 kegs of 25L fuel.

Simple. Joining a union is a choice not something an employer will deprive from an employee. Workers right should be protected at all cost. The government owe the people alot. Exercising your fundamental right is not a crime and the government must rise up to their responsibility.

So it’s a game of free will for the drivers. This is a win for Dangote coz the drivers will watch the body language of their employers. So far he is not treating them wrong, I don’t think they’ll want to unionize.

Union is by choice. Neither NUPENG nor Dangote Management can determine who joins or does not join by fiat.

The union's duty is to fight for its member, not Nigerians. Nigerians will have to fight for themselves.

so all the initial gragra of NUPENG don end. No sane driver that loves his job will join any union. This is more like there is freedom of joining union but having that same freedom after joining union is not guaranteed. Like someone suggested, Dangote should second the drivers to a contracting firm like C&I make I see where they will pass and join NUPENG. NUPENG is the last cabal of the oil industry that has kept this country hostage since inception. If it will take Dangote to destroy them for Nigerians to breathe so be it.

That is the law as enshrined in the trade unions act. No one can be forced to be a member of any union. However, over 90% will still end up joining the union.

Nupeng don't import fuel so how can they fix price of fuel?

The job of the union should be to protect workers rights not fix prices of products.

NUPENG is still looking for ways to control the oil sector. You can go after Dangote all you can. We all know with Dangote refinery, most of your corrupt practices in the oil sector have been reduced.

Dangote refinery is a Private-owned company. If Dangote workers now join unions, then bank workers, private hospital workers, private university workers, and other private company workers should be allowed to join unions, so the unions can also fight for the right of those workers.

And yet, one person was saying they are not serious that they can't teach him how to do his business.

One had predicted that this was one battle that Dangote cannot win and has proven to be so.

The two days that the strike lasted could have been avoided if the Dangote Group had allowed reason to prevail.

All the same, NUPENG and her allies have been able to set the record straight with this remarkable victory!

Nonsense. Dangote Refinery is a private business, and it has every right to decide whether its workers unionize or not. Imagine someone outside trying to run my company for me, when I’m the one paying taxes and taking care of my staff.

You can never understand Nigeria no matter how it is explained to you.
