Dangote has a monopolistic tendency.
So he wants to monopolise the distribution channel of his product. Straight from his refinery to the end users.
Which is not a bad thing in itself.
To achieve this, he plans to import 4000 new CNG powered trucks. These CNG trucks will replace all his old AGO/PMS powered trucks.
In addition to this, he wants to employ new drivers.

What that means is:
Loss of job for the old drivers.
Families once doing well will start doing badly economically as their means of income has been taken away.

On top of that, he is insisting that the new drivers must not join the PTD association nor the NUPENG.

This is where he stepped on the UNION.

You cant tell your employees not to join workers union.
How on earth would they be able to fight for their right if their rights and welfare is trampled on just like he is doing to the old drivers.

This is exactly the reason why the Union exists to amplify their members voice and help face their employers without the members facing job loss or any form of victimization.

Danogite cant have it all.
You win some , you lose some.

The Union is willing to compromise to allow him employ new drivers but he cant hinder them from joining workers/trade Union.

That's the point.
Why is NLC and TUC not fighting the banking and other sectors for prohibiting their employees from joining any union in Nigeria?

NUPENG has met their match. Dangote that fought NNPC and oil cabals to a standstill na him una wan dictate to how to sell his fuel. This move by NUPENG can be likened to the last kick of a dying horse. They no longer have a say in the value chain of oil distribution he ce the agitation. If u like shut down all the fuel stations dangote will supply pms to Ghana and other west Africa countries. NUPENG can't continue to hold everyone hostage in the name of unions. How many Nigerians belong to any union are they not living their lives.
Bros na initial gra gra. Dangote no go fit win the unions at all. He never reach.

Must the union be NUPENG. Are the workers complaining about the terms of employment? I have worked in private sector all my life and have not belong to any Union and all employers have treated me fairly. If I am no longer satisfied with the working conditions of a company I look for another. Unionism in Nigeria is just a guise by lazy workers to idle around in a company without consequences. Every private company which dangote is one should determine if they want their workers belonging to any Union or not.
Bros, no dey yan wetin you no know of. Comot body for NUPENG matter before eh choke.

Just imagine, so that they can keep diverting petroleum products to neighbouring countries as they used to do for subsidised products then. It can't work. Dangote know all these before importing a whole 4000trucks.

It's a good development to deliver his products to filling stations directly in Nigeria. They all have trackers and drivers are his employees. NUPENG supposed to give kudos to Dangote.

Except you work for law enforcement agency, you have a right to join any labour union, and the company has no power to stop it, and can't make you sign such document, as it is illegal.
Also, it's illegal for any union to force people to join the union.
People are still dragging NMA, NBA and ICAN in that regards

Don't make comments on issues you're ignorant of.
The workers have rights and unions exists to protect those rights. If Dangote does not have any evil plans towards the drivers, why is he insisting that they cannot join unions?
Also workers have equal rights not to unionize, dangote should tell tinibu to handle them the way he handle them B4, his refinery, his fuel, his tracks and finally his drivers

All the tanker drivers that have been killing people in this country, what has does criminals union done about it, have they provided support the the victims? When there is problem, the tanker becomes the company’s responsibility but the union dues of the drivers is the one that is most important to them. If you know the amount these people make from union dues, it is in the billions, I know what am saying cause I have had the opportunity to look into some of their accounts, they are all greedy bunch of people. Dangote should not be trapped by them, instead let him auction the refinery and take his money abroad to invest, make we see who go suffer am.
Hmmmm. This is my biggest fear with these issues.

The problem is not what NUPENG is doing right now but the next set of Dangotes (investors and business men) may vow to never engage in big projects and businesses in Nigeria.

I don't know you as a person but, please, don't let this temporary issue force you to make a permanent decision not to be a part of investment drive in the Nigerian space when you get the opportunity.

And I say this to others on nairaland too.

It is well.

You poeple are Devil not as if you are working to help the Drivers. Where were you when other private Sectors ,Banks and others mandated " no unionism in Nigeria" Don't worry leave Gangote to do whatever he likes with his workers as other private sectors did. It is a very difficult to expect Dangote to accept you to be in the control of his workers .

Talk about the Positive Side too

Dangote is introducing a new model of efficiency and sustainability into Nigeria’s energy and logistics sector. His decision to channel distribution directly from his refinery to end-users is not just about control. it is also about cutting unnecessary middlemen costs, reducing fuel scarcity, and ensuring product availability at more stable prices.

By importing 4,000 CNG-powered trucks, Dangote is investing heavily in cleaner energy, which will drastically cut down on carbon emissions compared to AGO (diesel) and PMS (petrol) trucks. This move aligns with global climate goals and contributes to a greener environment in Nigeria, reducing the nation’s dependency on imported fuel.

The employment of new drivers, although it may displace some old ones, also creates fresh job opportunities and ensures a workforce that is trained to handle modern, more efficient, and eco-friendly vehicles. This enhances safety, improves delivery timelines, and boosts overall productivity in the logistics sector.

On the union matter, Dangote may be seeking to avoid frequent industrial actions and disruptions that often paralyze businesses in Nigeria. By limiting union influence, he could be trying to maintain operational stability, uninterrupted supply chains, and investor confidence, which ultimately benefits the broader economy and ensures continuity in product delivery.

In the long run, this approach could lead to cheaper transportation costs, lower product prices for consumers, a more sustainable environment, and a logistics model that attracts foreign investment into Nigeria’s economy.

Alhaji should not mind them.If any worker says union is his problem. Let him sack the person immediately. Let him go create his own employment and do union .They want to use union to destroy his business. He should sack as many as possible. Thr are many people looking for the job

Why on petrol, must they have unions, did the unions buy the trucks for the drivers, why didn't they insist cement truck drivers too should have unions.....this were people who were never happy a private refinery was coming up in the first place, they are the saboteurs masking as CSOs.....if you want to join nupeng,go buy your own truck to distribute and live dangote trucks simple!!

They can go join obidients in their wailing, nobody cares.
Stop crying
Dangote has agreed for the drivers to unionise

What is the business of NUPENG with govt's responsibility to fix bad roads? If they declare strike on that, you lots will come out to say they are sponsored by the opposition. Now they are minding their business you're accusing them of not minding what is not their business.
If they are crooks, they can be voted out by the union members. Acting as if only Kokori will ever be fit to be a union leader is disingenuous, How much of him do you even know?
When was sec gen of NUPENG and pengassan whom pressured Gen Abacha after his coup till kokori was jailed. Kokori was jailed (94-98) for 4years till Gen Abdusalam Freed him

Abi why don't nupeng pressure government to fix all federal roads as it causes accident, vehicle break down, longer delivery and insecurity which leads to tanker hijack, drivers shot by armed robbers. Oil sector union leaders are crooks with exception of comrade frank kokori who gave federal government a good run for their power.
Very well said. They would never go on strike over the bad roads littered all over the country. Their problem is to force people to join their union.

If I was Dangote, I would have instigated a new union for my workers. Call it 'Private Refineries Workers Union' - PRWU angry

Just know that government can delist any union and replace it with another one in as much as duplication of unions ain't allowed in labour laws. Nigeria has never had a tough labour minister in person of Comrade Sen Chris Ngige

Coca-Cola and Nigerian Breweries are able to engage drivers to transport their products from the manufacturing plants to their distributors without Trade Unionists causing problems but Dangote can't be left alone to employ drivers to transport his products from his plants (Refinery) to the distributors (petrol stations) because it by-pass NUPENG middlemenhuh

Everything about this administration is focused on either frustrating citizens or centred on frivolities...this could be the reason a company representative had the guts to walk out of a meeting with a minister of the federal Republic (a representative of the president)in attendance.....this is the anyhowness we keep seeing in this country...
NUPENG is a meddlesome interloper.

Dangote only has a contract with the new drivers, NOT with NUPENG.

Imagine that you just open a new restaurant and want ti hire ten sales girls to work for you ,then some old women in the neighbourhood come into the restaurant, claiming to be the union of food sellers and insisting that you can't operate unless these new 10 sales girls join their association otherwise, they would cripple all food businesses in the town

You can speak for yourself. Not everyone working in private sector have experience of fair treatment from their employers. In fact, majority including Dangote's workers do not. Lour unionism is a right of workers all over the world and not something to be determined by the employer. That anomaly only exists in Nigeria where employers decide for workers whether to join union or not
some countries frown at unions.
