kunyeo:Yeah, the masses are only important when it's time for elections. Who wants to vote in a government that will bring policies that impoverishes the citizens. I pray for the time votes will count in this country. |

Okoroawusa:You love lamba_cious people who are clueless, corrupt and incapable of doing what they promise. Well noted. Buhari’ll reduce petrol to N40/L —David-WestPetrol should never cost more than N70 per litre, says APC January 19, 2015 The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70. On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price. But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”. It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel. https://www.thecable.ng/petrol-never-cost-n70-per-litre-says-apc/ |

Whois:Buhari actually removed the subsidy. Initially did price adjustment to reduce the amount of subsidy to importers (Price 95-144=N49) and also gave some tax rebate of about N38. He refused to also budget to pay subsidy in 2023, no payment of subsidy that year anymore. Tnubu only came in in May and affirm it that 'no more' as people, especially the importers, were expecting it will continue. It was only NNPC that was paying itself subsidy before remitting to Govt... they call it price equalization. All those also stop immediately Tinubu came ... No contradictions |

Subsidy on its own is not a bad policy but good policy, infact it still remain the only benefit ordinary citizens enjoyed from the government but Nigerians being whom we are always taking advantage of things in wrong way and making things difficult for the people and lack of sincerities and truth in the whole process and the corruption and fraudulent practices by players in the industry and also unpatriotic acts of some citizens in collaboration with border securities in smuggling the product out of the country makes the subsidies removal inevitable and the top three presidential candidates in the last general election also promise to remove it if voted for. |

lionshare:Let me start from your last paragraph. Who controls the AG? Who's in charge of the judiciary? If you can answer the 2 questions from the Nigerian context without bias, then it's fine. Now on the supplementary budget, you don't seem to get the message clearly. The supplementary budget has nothing to do with payment of subsidy to enrich the rich further. The supplementary budget i was talking about was provide palliatives for the hardest-hit section of the society by the removal of the subsidy which the president could have done. He could borrow money later(as he's done multiple times) to address it. Palliatives such as purchase of buses for all states, provision of drugs and equipment into hospltals, empowering the artisans financially and elderly, reduction of school fees in public schools, etc, could have been taken care of, by the supplementary budget but he simply looked the other way. Despite promising palliatives to be put in place in a matter of months, nothing has been done, 2 years after. Even if he chooses not to borrow to take care of budget deficit, what happens to the proceeds from the subsidy from 2023 till today? Do you and I know what had been recovered so far....? You may tell us, if you do |

Eriokanmi:Sorry to inform you the Nigerian judiciary isn't under the control of the Attorney General of the Federation, but rather, it operates independently as one of the three arms of government. The judiciary's primary role is to interpret laws and ensure they align with the Constitution. |

Eriokanmi:Using the Nigerian context, I should say the Federal Government (FG) controls the Attorney General (AG) and the judiciary, but then we have seen instances wherein states triumph over the FG in the Supreme Court — e.g., during the cash scarcity saga under Buhari. So, it would be unfair on the Supreme Court to say they are controlled by the FG when there are instances where the FG fails to win there. A supplementary budget means higher deficits, which is why I asked you: how will the FG fund it? Billions of dollars are not just sitting somewhere waiting for the FG to come and collect them — it's a long process, and the creditors are always careful to avoid defaults. This is why the FG tends to have a Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to guide its expenditures. It's also why Buhari resorted to printing naira, because that's the easiest finance to access — despite its many disadvantages. I will marry both palliatives and the proceeds of subsidy. Ideally, the state governments should be the ones providing all these palliatives to their residents, because they are the biggest beneficiaries of the subsidy removal. While I do not know much about those rice palliatives, I can attest that progress has been made with CNG. But it appears the greed of the average Nigerian has overtaken the potential benefits. I think the FG should do a better job of explaining subsidy proceeds. Prior to now, NNPC used to absorb the cost of subsidy either by deducting the difference between landing cost and pump price from oil revenue, or through crude-for-product arrangements — both of which meant little or no FAAC receipts. With the removal of the subsidy, we have seen higher receipts accrue to FAAC. But then, who gets the lion's share? The states and local governments. In fact, under the new tax regime, states and LGs get an even higher percentage of FAAC. P.S. My initial reference to subsidy was to highlight the net effect of consumption subsidy: that it can only favour the big consumer — not really the poor. |
