The Japa Generation: Why 7 Out Of 10 Nigerian Youths Want To Relocate by cityboylagos(op): 9:39am On Sep 10, 2025
The Rise of the “Japa” Dream

In today’s Nigeria, one word dominates youth conversations — Japa.
Borrowed from Yoruba slang meaning “to run away or escape,” it has become the most common dream for Nigerian youths. From WhatsApp groups to Sunday family tables, the question isn’t “Are you traveling?” but “When are you Japa-ing?”
The Numbers Behind the Trend

The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently revealed that over 50% of Nigerian youths are actively seeking opportunities abroad. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

7 in 10 young Nigerians say they would relocate permanently if given the chance.

A 2024 NOI Poll showed that education, job opportunities, and safety rank as the top three reasons.

Between 2019 and 2023, Canada alone issued over 100,000 study permits to Nigerians, making Nigeria its fastest-growing source country for students.

Why Youths Are Japa-ing

1. Economic Frustration

Inflation and unemployment leave many Lagos youths disillusioned. With over 40% youth unemployment, the search for greener pastures is almost inevitable.

2. Education and Career Growth

Foreign universities promise global-standard education and better career networks. Many leave for degrees, but most stay back to work.

3. Security Concerns

From kidnapping headlines to urban crime, safety is a daily concern in Lagos and beyond. Japa represents escape and peace of mind.

4. Peer Influence

Every youth knows someone who has Japa-ed. Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp statuses amplify the dream, making it look easy and glamorous.

5. Weak Trust in Governance

Decades of corruption, broken promises, and poor infrastructure fuel a deep belief that Nigeria cannot change anytime soon.

The Cultural Impact

The Japa wave is not just about passports — it’s changing Nigerian culture:

Family separation: Parents watch children scatter across continents.

Churches and mosques: Fewer youths in congregations, more prayers for visas.

Relationships: Long-distance marriages and “relocate or break up” ultimatums.

Music & Pop culture: Afrobeat lyrics now reference visas, airports, and foreign life.

The Double-Edged Sword

While the exodus creates a brain drain — with doctors, engineers, and creatives leaving — it also brings opportunities through remittances. Nigerians abroad sent $20 billion back home in 2023, sustaining families and businesses.
Final Thoughts

The Japa Generation is rewriting what it means to be Nigerian. For many, patriotism is no longer about staying, but about surviving and thriving elsewhere.

Whether this wave becomes a permanent loss or a global expansion of Nigerian influence depends on how Nigeria addresses the very issues pushing its best and brightest away.

Until then, the chant remains the same:
“Anywhere but here.”

Re: The Japa Generation: Why 7 Out Of 10 Nigerian Youths Want To Relocate by Eriokanmi:
The best way to japa is when you're still single. You'd make it faster with a clear sense of direction, judging from experience. Also, once you've clocked 40s, please dont take the entire family with you at first, or you'd be feeding from hand to mouth and over stress yourself to make ends meet. Life no hard, it's what you make it.

Go, work and take care of your family back home. You may decide to stay back at work and do overtime. Or you combine 2 jobs together, you may even be away for the whole week from home, hustling. Love is incomplete without money oo, put that in your left palm so you don't feed with it.. With your family with you, you cant achieve much. Don't expect any white collar job when you get there at 40s, even as a single youth but if it comes your way, grab it. Put your children in good schools back home, you're still spending far less in best schools locally, compared to the fees and expenses over there. Maintain just one room where you can sleep and wake up. With your family with you, you know that's not possible grin.

Once you're fully settled with some reliable investments back home and children education well sorted out, then you may invite them over for holidays, until they finally move and this time, they're graduates seeking to further. Wife too won't have to work under stress.

This statement above sounds more and more idiotic everytime I hear Nigerians celebrating and touting it around... Especially supporters of this government.

Just stop at "Brain Drain"! Infact, brain and economic drain!

Take football for instance... Just imagine we had Saka, Olise, Eze, etc, playing alongside Osimhen and Lookman, with someone like Jo Bonfere or Westerhoff coaching them in Super Eagles!

No way we won't reach semifinals of the world cup.

The reason is not far fetched since we allowed the incompetent, corrupt and clueless Oshiomhole’s Association of Past Criminals, APC replace the deregulation and privatisation PDP capitalists a decade ago.

thisweekng:
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

You see that weak trust in government sums it all.

The distrust for government is almost at its highest now but fellas over here would want to downplay it effect, any government whose citizens can't trust us heading towards self destruction.

It is well. The solution is to fix Nigeria cos even after japa, everyone still wants to go back home & do big things, unless you have no family or relatives back in Nigeria.

Many Nigerians will travel outside Nigeria to stay permanent than previous years.

The tax system that will effect unemployment people from January first 2026, will push many Nigerians out of Nigeria next year.

Thank you. I forgot to add this. Discipline is very key. I have a friend living in NY, he's in his 40s. He has to imbibe high level of discipline. And as a responsible man, you shouldn't find this difficult, wishing everyone was like me. My friend comes home once in a year while his family visits once in a while with the interval of 6 months apart. Wife and children spend a month during Xmas each year, while friend comes in June and stays for 3wks. He's a green card holder with 10 years validity. He's so lucky. He got it during biden administration. He sought asylum before his intended stay expired. Within 5 years of entering us, he's built a 5-bed duplex in lagos. Wife and children are doing ok
