Another wailing post. This situation is not peculiar to Nigeria alone. All over the world including China people are struggling to get jobs now. Talking about the number of applicants, we all still remember the immigration jobs disaster during the Jonathan era, so it didn't start just now. Unemployment has always been the bane of this society
Oga who said it was not...?

The post said a harsh reminder didn't it? Why are you people always like that?

The volume of remote/ vitrual jobs looking for talents are staggering.

Its indeed a shame that Nigerians cannot take advantage of the internet to earn huge income from international recruiters and remote jobs rather than wait for Civil Service Jobs.
It's always easier said than done.. who told you Nigerians are not trying their best.
It's not always easy landing your first gig and breaking into the world of remote work system especially as a Nigerian.

For Upwork alone, you use money to buy connects to even apply for jobs.

Brother. That isn't the right mind set.
How many more possible chances would you keep passing over repeatedly in your life time based on this mindset.

The bitter reality is, you could have been one of the people shortlisted, who would eventually go on to fill the available 3927 vacancies.

You only stand a chance if and only if you participate in the process.
No doubt there would be a. Couple of people perhaps tens , hundreds or even a thousand that would get the opportunity based on man know man, but trust me, not all the possible available seats will be filled based on man know man.

At least a few of them, say dozens, hundreds or even thousands would stand out during the entire recruitment process.

My counsel to you, going forward, provided you meet the requisite requirements, dont short change yourself by not participating, rather try your luck perhaps mother nature will smile on you.

The job I do today is one I never imagined I would be picked for.
All I did was show up.
Participated in the process.
Then got selected.
In one year I flew 52 times all paid for by the company.
Got lodged in a hotel for 10 months
Apart from my salary, i got paid out station allowance which is a dream salary of some.
This was while on a given project.
Projects yapa.
Exposure yapa.
Contacts yapa.
Experience yapa.
Travel yapa.

See life gives all of us equal chances to attempt to climb the ladder.
You either take or or not.

I took mine and got what I desired after a rigorous process.
Take yours when next the opportunity beckons.

Peace.

Unemployment crisis is killing this nation.

We need to take bold steps to combat unemployment.

I've always been of the view that, reducing unemployment rests majorly on the capability of the government in ensuring that the economy is conducive for businesses to thrive.
Without this, we'd keep dancing on same spot for ages.

It's appalling to say, thank in spite of the huge number of graduates employed by private employers, the unemployment deficit is still huge in Nigeria.
People are working and starting businesses daily in Nigeria......our unemployment crisis isn't as bad as opposition will always want us to think.....under employment is not unemployment and I strongly feel the former is the elephant in the room.

Osun state for Instance can create 10,000 household farm settlements across the state for agric value chain development.....each household can employ 4 persons each, thats about 60k people alone.

Just invite people to apply for 1 hectare of land per household to be used for any agro business of choice....govt provides roads, electricity, water, security and guaranteed loans for anyone interested....if you fail,I are pushed out for someone else to take over.

Govt will provide subsidised inputs and equipments like tractors, drones etc to make it tech driven.....there will be a ready market for anything you produce

The state govt can collaborate with fg and private developers to build farm estates that can be mortgaged to the holders.....that's less than a thousand youths per LG in osun state.

But we all blame fg for what state govts can easily do.

Go on jobberman, flexjobs (Remote) and Linkedin and get your jobs in one (1) month.

Ensure you add soft skills and are also sellable for your specialisation with good mentorship.

Jobs are for the most skilled applicants.

The numbers shared are heartbreaking, no doubt. Over half a million Nigerians chasing under 4,000 jobs? It’s a harsh reflection of where we are as a country. But while it's easy—and even justified—to feel overwhelmed or bitter, I think it's also important we ask some harder questions, both of the system and of ourselves.

Yes, the unemployment crisis is real. Yes, it's systemic. But if we keep pointing fingers without digging deeper, we’ll just keep recycling the same frustration year after year.

Here are a few things I think we also need to talk about:

🔹 Why are nearly 600,000 people chasing a single government job stream?
It’s not just about passion for Customs—it’s about stability, security, and predictability. But that tells us something: the private sector is either unattractive, inaccessible, or underdeveloped. That’s where policy needs to change, yes—but it's also where innovation and entrepreneurship need to rise.

🔹 What role does our education system play?
We’re producing graduates, but are we producing problem-solvers, builders, or creators? Not everyone will be an entrepreneur, true—but we can’t all be job seekers either. We must start pushing for skill-based education, digital literacy, and practical knowledge that can open global doors, not just government gates.

🔹 What are we doing as individuals and communities?
Are we networking smartly? Are we volunteering, freelancing, building digital portfolios, or learning high-demand skills like coding, design, writing, marketing, or even trades? Not as a magical fix—but as a strategy to stop putting our entire future in the hands of overburdened government slots.

To be clear: the government must create an enabling environment. That’s non-negotiable. But as citizens, especially the youth, we can’t wait for ideal conditions. We have to adapt, collaborate, innovate, and keep building—even in chaos.

Nigeria is hard. No one’s denying that. But if we all become passive observers in this "brutal lottery," then we’ve already lost. Let’s turn the frustration into fuel.
Succinct. Kindly permit a repost elsewhere. Thanks.

2 LIST FROM THE MINISTERS
3 LIST FROM WEALTHY INDIVIDUALS
4 LIST FROM TOP CIVIL SERVANTS
5 CORRUPTION.
6 MERIT LIST #on hold.

Some who applied for custom job have jobs but the salary is nothing. If in doubt ask yourself why do private school teachers always apply any time govt wants to employ teachers. The answer is because salary is poor, 99.9% of private school teachers will retire without pension or gratuity
Re: Nigeria Customs Recruitment – A Harsh Reminder Of Our Employment Crisis by sleeknike: 6:58pm On Sep 11, 2025
While I agree with your point to some extent, don't be quick to think that all the people that applied were unemployed. Yes a lot of them may be unemployed but Nigerians also have this thing for "Federal government work". There may be lots of bankers, and many other professionals among the applicants.

From the 3927 available vacancy, 3900 has already either been sold as slots or given to family and friends of politicians. The 200k+ applicants can jostle for the 27 slots left.

Let's even imagine that by some stroke of miracle, Nigeria is no longer a corrupt country and the 3927 slots are intact, that means out of the 200k+ qualified applicants, only 3927 will be selected.

That's approximately 1.4% of the shortlisted candidates and 0.7% of the total application.
This is if the 3927 slots were intact.

But we know it's easier for WestHam to win the English Premier league this season than the 3927 slots being intact.
This is the sad reality.

It's very unfortunate that we find ourselves in this messy bloc.

My guy was sent an offer letter from a very powerful commission but they later sent him another letter that his employment was on hold.

A more beautiful Nigerian took his supposed slot.
What a country!!

Have you factored in the dear people who actually applied and don't need the jobs

You should Also factor in the people who are already Working and they applied

This is the norm everywhere don't make it look strange
I get your point. Even if we factor on this we will still have a very large number of people applying for the job.

All the points you highlighted herein only goes on to vilify me.

You see, no opposition is blowing the unemployment rate out of proportion.
It is the obvious fact.
Data does not lie, a simple breakdown of the recruitment process shows clearly that there's massive unemployment in Nigeria.

Unemployment is unemployment, whether season, cyclical or underemployment.

You mentioned government providing roads, water, electricity, security, and loans.
Now if I ask, how has the government fared in this regard?

Farmers are killed everyday on their farms by marauding herdsmen, leaving farmers with no choice than to flee their farms to save their lives. Residents of rural areas now leave I'm droves, thanks to Government's nonchalant response to these farmers and rural dwellers pleas for help.

Just last year or 2023, Olam farm lost over a million dollars investment of rice plantain in Kogi or Kwara State, due to flood. Painfully, there was an earlier warning about the impending flood, and funds were released to mitigate against it, but unfortunately, the funds were diverted.

I go on to further ask, where is the electricity?
Nigeria currently generates less than 10k Megawatts, which is barely sufficient for a population of well over 200M.

I could go on and on, but there's no point.

Your talk is cheap talk.

90% of the applicants are already working in other government agencies. People have the impression that you can make it big time in Customs that explains the rush.

Tinubu oooo e don do na, do you want to kill us all ni? angry
I'm not a fan of Tinubu the problem with Nigeria unemployment is lack of Entrepreneurship in Nigeria. If you notice most of our factories are owned by foreigners. Nigerians would rather invest in mansions and over expensive cars and gold iPhones when their foreign counterparts would build factories and manufacture goods. Nigerians hate long hardwork and only want people to create things they can make money from i.e Uber, Bolt, POS. All these pips jumping on the POS bandwagon. I cannot understand how someone would give me N30,000 and I'm making a Profit of N1,000 max from the transaction. If I'm doing business of N30,000 my profit is N5,000 last last. Sometimes it's even N10,000 profit. It's not everyday I make N10,000 profit o. But I'm saying if I do business of 5k at least 1k is my profit.
