There Is No Right To Self-determination In The Nigerian Constitution. by madridguy(op): 1:07pm On Sep 12, 2025
There is no right to self-determination in the Nigerian constitution. By section 2(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Nigeria is AN INDISSOLUBLE SOVEREIGN STATE.

So, any region wants to break away, must ensure that they must sponsor a bill to amend the constitution and follow the process. For the process, the proposal must be submitted to the National Assembly, and supported by 2/3 majority of the National Assembly and further supported by not less than 2/3 of all the 36 States. See Section 9 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Nigeria.

So you don’t need to wait for the Federal Government to get this done. Let your lawmakers do the needful. Anything short of this is treason and terrorism anybody found guilty shall be treated as an enemy of the State.

Reno put it precisely, "because of Nnamdi Azikiwe, section 86 was inserted into our constitution with the proviso that if any region should secede, it would be an act of treason". "That set the precedent for indissolubility" of Nigeria.

Copied.

Well, Nnamdi Azikiwe ensured that the right to self determination was excluded from the independent constitution and all other constitutions since then have simply copied and paste that provision.

If you ever want to know a dull and unenlightened person, you will notice that, when facts are presented, they shift the goal post or insult you.

The section is explicit and concise. However, with benefit of insight, at a point in the history of our nation, the same constitution was in hiatus!! Then comes the doctrine of necessity. In the same light, the doctrine of Almighty Supreme Sovereignty may as well override the 99 constitution.
