Food Prices Have Crashed, Says Agriculture Minister, Abubakar Kyari by Ofunaofu(op): 7:27pm On Sep 12, 2025
The prices of food items have crashed across the country, according to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

The Minister said this when he featured on an ARISE TV programme on Friday.

He said President Bola Tinubu’s interventions on food security have started yielding results.

He also defended the administration’s strategy of combining production support with temporary importation to address what he described as deep-rooted structural imbalances in the agricultural sector.

“There are tools if you want to take care of the structural imbalances in the agricultural sector,” Kyari said.

“I have said it before—even the former President of the African Development Bank during his tenure, he also imported. There are tools to manage what you already have.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came at a time when there was huge structural default in terms of food security and that is why he had to declare the clarion call and emergency on food security in July 2023.

“Food availability, food security is a matter of entrepreneurial availability, supply and demand. In Nigeria so much availability and demand were not there, and part of the reason for the intervention was to ramp up production and at the same time import to make up the difference, because we do not have absolute production for all food crops that we have. Rice, for example—we have about 15% gap in what we can supply and what we have in the country.”

Kyari clarified that the temporary importation window introduced by the government was meant to stabilise prices without discouraging local farmers.

“The importation window was only for six months, and it has come and gone. And that was the amount that was demanded. When you look at the global demand field, it is not enough to make farmers discouraged with agricultural production,” he said.

“For example, while that was going on, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the Central Bank to release 2 million bags of fertiliser to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture for onward delivery free of charge at zero cost, and that was done. So at the end of the day, when you look at it, there were so many interventions. We had so many programmes that supported farmers with fertiliser at 50%. So, there was a lot of production in 2024.”

Tinubu had recently directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to implement urgent measures aimed at reducing food prices nationwide.

E.g. meet it at #100, raise it from #100 to #1000, then bring it down to #800, then claim it has "crashed".

Have food prices crashed like petrol price, which was promised by APC in 2015 and again in 2023 huh

Deltafirstson:
Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.

In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.

However, pump price of fuel hit N537 per litre days after Tinubu ended subsidy.

On Tuesday, the price climbed further to N617, a development that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) attributed to “market forces”.

Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.

Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.

At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.

However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.

King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, a Fuji musician who performed at the rally, interrupted the president’s speech with chants as the crowd cheered.

On the campaign podium with the president were Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Pa Bisi Akande, interim National Chairman of the APC; Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President; Senator Gbenga Daniel; among other bigwigs of the ruling party.

Tinubu went further to say Nigerians would defy the acute fuel scarcity at the time and trek to cast their votes.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200/N500 per litre. Go and relax, we will crash the prices,” he had said.

Petrol should never cost more than N70 per litre, says APC

January 19, 2015

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70.

On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price.

But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”.

It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel.

Buhari’ll reduce petrol to N40/L —David-West

FORMER Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Prof. Tamunoemi David-West, said that Nigerians should expect sharp drop in petrol price from the current N87 to about N40 per litre, saying, “the president-elect, Gen. Mohammed Buhari, will reduce the fuel pump price to N40 per litre.”

Government reports and ministerial claims often sound nice on TV, but they rarely match what people experience daily. If food prices had truly “crashed,” Nigerians in the markets would be the first to celebrate but that’s not the reality on ground. Inflation is still biting hard, salaries haven’t increased, and basic food items are still expensive for the average person. Many of these pronouncements are polished PR statements meant to give the impression of progress, but until ordinary Nigerians feel the impact in their pockets, such reports remain questionable.

This man is leaving in another planet or dreaming in a wonder land. I thought Tinubu said they should look for how too crash the prices of food last week. If this has happened within that period then I would see this as the 11th wonders of the world. One of the problem I have with this government is there ability to gaslight us into believing what does not exist by telling us not to believe our lying eyes. cool shocked
