Mr Sabo Nanono, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, says there is the need for Nigerians to accord agriculture its prime position a good replacement for the dwindling crude oil.
Nanono gave the advice on Owerri at a one-day workshop organised for maize growers and processors by the Maize Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (MAGPMAN).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, with theme: “Post-Harvest Management of Maize Stakeholders Conference- under the CBN Maize Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP)” , had many farmers, especially maize growers in attendance.
The minister, who was represented by Mr Chris Iwuchukwu, the State Director in the ministry, said that crude oil was failing the country and a reason why agriculture should be given more priority in the nation’s affairs.
Mr Ikongbe Iya, a Deputy Manager, Development Finance Office of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Owerri, who represented the Maize Champion Development Finance Department, CBN, said Nigerian population was increasing day by day with a lot of concern on natural resources and the environment.
He said there was need for sustainable agriculture, hence the workshop, to build maize growers capacity to reduce losses on agricultural products and not necessarily maize.
“There is need to develop low cost technology to grow the agricultural products. The machines for today’s demonstration was locally produced,” he said.
Iya said that the Anchor Borrowers Scheme was necessitated by the need to curtail importation of goods from outside the country, adding that it was also to supply agricultural raw materials to farmers and companies.
Some of the participants commended the association for putting up the programme, which they said, had added a lot to their knowledge of maize cultivation and preservation.
They promised to extend what they learnt to their colleagues.
A participant, Mr George Okeke, the Chief Agroforestry Officer, Imo State Agric Development Programme, Owerri, an extension of the state ministry of agriculture, described the programme as laudable.
He harped on the need to make farming easier for farmers by ensuring that fertilisers, other farming inputs and funds were made available to farmers on time.
Mrs Mary Okoro from Okwuabala in Orlu, Imo, said she had applied for her own Anchors Borrowers’ fund to start farming and was happy for the programme.
NAN reports that the highlight of the programme was the demonstration of a way of removing corn from the cob using locally produced machine.

With covid-19 likely to continue for quite some time in the future, global food reserves may face shortages and we need to be prepared early.

Farming in Nigeria is now suicidal. If it's not Boko Haram slaughtering farmers then it's herdmen exterminating them.

We might think they're waking up but they're still joking. If I had the opportunity to be president of this country, my annual budget in agriculture would surpass that of defence and seek more funds in the form of bond or loan. I'd bring up policies that would encourage agriculture participation in every home with incentives, encourage graduates to go into farming with well monitored incentives and loans, invite experts from abroad to give my people the skills needed to grow improved seedlings and exclude all the retired govt officials who have gone into agriculture after making so much money from the govt.

I would also send Nigerian agricultural researchers and engineers to countries like Thailand to learn about rice farming in a modern way, Holland on modern animal husbandry and milk production, the same Indonesia who once came to Nigeria to learn about oil palm plantation and how they did it over the years after they took some of our seedlings along with them after the training, making them now the largest exporter of palm oil in the world and our country is also importing from them...how are the mighty fallen! Agriculture would sell more than oil as we will be exporting.

I've stopped blaming God or asking Him for blessings over Nigeria cos it would be like offending Him. He has blessed us more than enough with everything we need to impact the whole world. I'd rather keep praying God removes all the bad and care free leaders we currently have in government and I believe He's busy working on that.

The government should prioritize giving out genuine loans and grant, not the shams we have been experiencing.

Afterwards, Fulani herdsmen will ransack the farms with their cattle and kill off the owner of the plantation.

This shit reminds me of what I passed through in school as an Agric student. I got a land from the head of farm through my HOD. Behold, cow swallowed all I planted and there was no one I could run to. I am talking of a university (LAUTECH) land.
If truly farming worth it, there will be no need of encouraging us to go into it. Have you ever seen govt trying to persuade us to go for chevron or CBN job?

Ignorance Minister, priority should be in Education , Healthcare, Security (against herdsmen) and Industrialisation. More than 70% of Nigerians are already involved in Agriculture, the problem is not farming but the industrialization of farming/Agriculture

OK legalise cannabis and allow us to farm it.

Also protect farmers and travellers from rampaging herdsmen.

And finally if you improve the electricity situation we will be able to store our produce better.

Do all this and there will be more interested in farming.

Although to be honest I'm not sure farming is as profitable on a national scale as it used to be but anything to diversify the economy.

This same ministry of agriculture has failed to pay we the Enumerators of the Fmardpace for the assignment of enumerating farmers since June. They told us to tell farmers that they want food sufficiency in 2021 yet no farmer has been given any input up till now neither did they pay us despite calculating 250naira per a farmer captured by an enumerator. In this excercise, you're to walk round the farm land for you to know how tidious it is.
