Tobi Amusan Calls Out Athletics Federation Over Poor Treatment

Nigerian world champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan, has openly criticized the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for what she describes as years of poor treatment towards athletes.

Amusan pointed out the sharp difference between how other countries prepare their athletes and what Nigerian athletes receive. According to her, while foreign teams arrive with full, high-quality kits and equipment, Nigerian athletes are given only a few items—often of low quality—and packed in nylon bags instead of proper travel luggage.

She also noted that important gear such as long sleeves and singlets are usually missing from the kits, leaving athletes no choice but to rely on their personal clothing.

Amusan further expressed disappointment over what she called unprofessional conduct and poor organization within the federation. She warned that this kind of treatment is one of the reasons many Nigerian athletes consider changing their nationality to represent other countries.

Highlighting that this has been a repeated problem, Amusan said, “Every year, that’s how we collect it.”

Her strong call for change comes just ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she is expected to lead Team Nigeria.

The only people enjoying Nigeria are the politicians, their cronies, and the contractors and industrialists enjoying their patronage.

All.others who can change their narrative by leaving, are doing so.

One of the most corrupt time in the history of this country. Imagine someone said "na cloth go run ni" in another section as if the welfare of these athletes are not important and must not be met so as to boost their moral. If government fit they chop for doing nothing, why will the hard working Nigerian athletes not reap the fruit of their labor. This is insane and i fully support the athlete on this one. USA team go carry gold while the same government doing nothing will be expecting gold from our team.

Everybody for Nigeria de highly corrupt, if you see someone complaining about corruption is because it has not gotten to him / her and benefiting

People are steadily getting tired of representing this country. Even this fine, strong nyash babe is getting tired. It is very rare to see Nigerian athletes in these. She's one of the few athletes that makes us feel among. Now it looks like she's leaving soon.

The country is a disgrace. I am well aware that hundreds of millions of naira are disbursed to the various sports federations before events, but it gets pocketed by the corrupt officials with stipends going to the actual competitions for the athletes.

Very shameful. It's no wonder a lot of Nigerian athletes are seeking other nationalities citizenship to compete. Pathetic

Irresponsibility, lack of accountability and corruption all embedded in the leadership system, unfortunately they have people like yhu still supporting them and not seeing where it's all wrong; that in itself is the biggest problem.

This has actually being happening for more than a decade, more reasons why our Athletes also dont get to the tail ends of events and win enough medals, poor administration, poor preparation, poor remuneration year in year out, its baffling and disheartening to be hearing this in a country that is flowing with milk and honey and so much natural resources that can be tapped and easily brings wealth and which can always be shared across borders to improve the standard of preparation, increase the wages and welfarism of these athletes which would automatically rub off on all the athletes and then we have a flurry of medals in all track events, outdoor and indoor Nigeria athletes competes in.
