The New Age Hustle: Why Lagos Youths Now Prefer Tech Skills To University Degree by eyesoflagos(op): 2:14pm On Sep 13, 2025
Once upon a time in Lagos, a university degree was the golden ticket to success. Parents prayed, saved, and sacrificed just to see their children graduate. But today, the hustle has taken a new shape — and the classroom isn’t the main stage anymore. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The Tech Takeover
From coding to UI/UX design, product management, and digital marketing, Lagos youths are chasing skills that guarantee immediate opportunities rather than certificates that may not secure jobs. The rise of tech hubs in Yaba, Lekki, and Ikeja is proof that the city has become Nigeria’s Silicon Valley.

The Numbers Don’t Lie
According to a Jobberman report, 1 in 3 Nigerian youths now prefer tech skills over traditional career paths. With unemployment hovering above 30% nationally, the shift is hardly surprising. Bootcamps and online courses promise employable skills in six months — not four years.

Skipping School for Bootcamps
It’s no longer shocking to hear about young Lagosians dropping out of university or delaying admission to enroll in coding schools and digital skill programs. To many, the path of learning Python or Figma looks more promising than memorizing outdated lecture notes.

Why This Matters
This new hustle is redefining what success looks like in Lagos. While older generations still see degrees as prestige, Gen Z and millennials are building wealth through remote jobs, freelancing, and startups powered by tech skills. In a city where survival means innovation, this shift is less about rebellion and more about survival.

The Bigger Picture
If the trend continues, Lagos could become Africa’s largest exporter of tech talent — but it also raises questions about the future of Nigeria’s universities. Will they adapt or fade into irrelevance?

Question for readers:
If you had to choose today — a university degree or tech skills — which one would you pick?

You people should stop preaching a one way traffic

That’s the problem of Nigeria, everybody just jump into one thing and people start what they don’t even know why they are starting

Tech is not the only thing you can do to make it in life …. In fact it is one out of 100

There are still lots of opportunities and well paid careers in finance (like so much opportunities and so well paid)
Healthcare, Biotech, supply chain, cyber security, compliance, project management and so many more

And with the way AI is evolving at the speed of light, many tech skills will become irrelevant soon

sulaak:
Healthcare, Biotech, supply chain, cybersecurity, compliance, and project management are all considered tech skills in the USA. They are called STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. To work in Tech (Soft Engr), you would usually have the same aptitude for working in any STEM subject.

BTW AI will do majority of the skills of a Software Engr but what skills do you need to work with AI probably training in Software Engr
There’s a difference between focusing a career majorly in tech or using basic skills like power bi, python and the rest to do your day to day work in your main concentration.

A finance analyst , investment banker, portfolio manager, project manager will utilize these skills in the process of doing their main job. They didn’t hire them to come and be showing off tech skills , their main task is their primary job function which is for a finance analyst to do his finance, a portfolio manager to turn over investment and outperform, a healthcare analyst to use data and do his main job in health care.
Check any job description of these careers you mention, the main job description still stands and when they request for skills, they put experience using python, Power bi etc

They won’t hire someone who is a pro in power bi and doesn’t have finance experience to come and do a finance analyst role… neither willl they hire a tech guru to do a project manager role.. they hire a finance analyst guru with tech skills and so on… the skill is just basic /medium skill required to use the tools they use for that particular role in that organization

They can still hire a professional and give them short training and time to adjust to internal tools to do their jobs… if they need to build powerful dashboards , that’s where they have tech teams in the company they reach out to build for them…

And you are very wrong on the aptitude test they give them, they are not the same.. on recruitment, they test each role according to the role… finance analyst for finance analyst, pm for pm… tech for tech

Reminds me of when recharge card printing was the in-thing na so everybody enter am till it became oversaturated. Then came forex where lots of people with little knowledge/experience about trading lost fortunes. Now it's P.O.S and tech even those that lack the aptitude and passion for it now wants to force themselves into it because it's the only ticket out of poverty.

It's not a bad thing though. All man must survive 😁

I’ve said it continually that I can read all your lecture notes in 2months and pass your university degree exam, it’s a waste of time,
Those outdated handouts can’t match a well detailed YouTube video on same course, just give me your course outline and I will dust it

Most universities engage students in partime studies just to sell handout and generate funds, you see many graduates that knows nothing , it’s a shame

The youth in Lagos are highly informed and always ready to embrace technological advancements. Why wouldn’t they engage with the developments of their generation? Lagos State is on the verge of becoming one of the largest tech hubs in the world. After technology, young people should focus on making significant investments in modernized agriculture.

Nairaland has no standard. This eye of lagos continues to create AI slop and it always makes front page. He uses AI to create false statistics, false narratives and false everything and it always makes front page. Are you paying seun to feed us this slop?

From the topic, body, image attached down to the last full stop, not one of it was created by a human being. After he prompts the model, he copies and pastes to his blog and then pastes here.

Nairaland--AI slop pipeline.

This one is just one among many recurring posters.

as much as I believe in university education the yoruba elders say everybody cannot sleep and face the same direction. While some people will go to school to trained to be professionals, corporate workers or civil servants, some will opt out of school to be tech specialists it's called choice and that's what makes lagos diverse.imagine if everybody in kagos was just a 9 to 5 and traders what kind of state will that be so there's nothing wrong with that

Who told you that AI - is Not Part of Tech- Revolution?
When the White People Change From BLACK AND WHITE Television 📺 to the Colours Television - Did they Disband the Technology that Came with The Black and White Television?

They will all end up as TECHNICIANS, not tech leaders. You need university degree and more to lead corporations

Techs can never replace human center skills or skills that demand higher level of thinking.
University education remains very paramount.

What I suggest. A good country should adopt a compulsory techs skills in basic schools and secondary education. When foundation is solid. Up-skilling and re-skilling will be much more easier.

They are some high level thinking skills that can't be replaced with techs . Such as strategy, innovation, empathy , decisions making, communication and collaboration etc.

These high human centered skills will still remain relevant in our unis and our society at large .

So no worries . We just need to embrace tech's and understand the limitations and her capabilities

This is a defining moment in our history.

What this means is that,u just need the basic education to become successful in this country.

Is either u train ur child to be the following:
Self employed.
Investor
Business owner

If not, they will become a modern slave with the usual employment or employee mentality.

Last advice.

Give ur children Capital...save it for them and ease their future burden.

That's tech as well.

Tech isn't just about coding Python or Java.

Even running a YouTube channel or Instagram business page is tech.

If I was a fresh graduate today I wouldn't even be looking for employment.

Too many avenues to make money independently now.

I mean, for crying out loud you can go on AI ChatGPT now and ask it to give you an idea for a YouTUBE channel, and it will give you 100+ ideas plus even the audio text of what to say in every video you post on any topic on your channel!

So all you need to do is post a video once or twice a week or more, and in a couple months you'll be counting dollars! Within one year, your life transformed to something else.

Alignment is key here.
Don't think you can get a solid tech job without a solid foundation a degree provides....and the culture here dictates your employment to be based on the degree you possess..you can't get interviewed for some roles without degree o

You will be competing with those with degree(s),don't let anybody deceive you. Nigerians love the crab mentality...don't just do what others are doing

This is especially true regarding training in tech related fields. In the US , high school students ( SSS) learn cybersecurity , programming and other computers science / IT related courses and earn certificates which make them work ready before graduation.
Although many of them still go on to study in college.
