Oh well, what can I say? I have been with Microsoft since late 2020, and i can say that i am feeling the troubles in the tech world, layoffs, and project managers reducing work hours. This trend has started since late 2023, people have hoped for a recovery (as this isn't new), but 2025 is almost gone and it is only getting worse. I will never advise anyone to skip university education for any tech skill outside it, you can do both, most "tech jobs" do not come with peace of mind, job security is near nonexistent, especially now, even when you have a job, you must keep your eyes out for job openings, many in the tech world are getting gigs and not actual jobs, imagine a family man living like that, such a man isn't very wise. It is great when it is good, definitely depressing when it is not, hard to recover when you're out of luck, any skill anyone can learn within a relatively short time frame isn't the best to rely on in a densely populated sector or the world in general. |

Omoawoke:Hey, I totally get where you're coming from, and you're spot on about "Nigerian" tendency to herd everyone into one path like tech's the only golden ticket. There's a whole world of opportunities out there—finance, healthcare, biotech, supply chain, cybersecurity, compliance, you name it, and they can be seriously lucrative and fulfilling. You're preaching truth there! Secondly, while AI would definitely replace tech roles such as coding and data analysis; AI isn’t quite the grim reaper for project management and product management. Those roles are super human-centric—think wrangling teams, aligning stakeholders, or steering the vision of a product. AI can assist with data crunching or automating tasks, but it’s not sitting in the driver’s seat for those anytime soon. The nuance, the gut calls, the people skills? That’s still a human game. Also, just a quick note—those sectors you mentioned? They’re not tech-free zones. Finance leans on fintech platforms, healthcare uses medical software, supply chain runs on logistics tech, and cybersecurity and compliance are tech’s bread and butter. Even project and product management often rely on tools like Jira or Trello to keep things humming. So, tech’s more like the engine powering these fields, not a separate lane. Great points overall, though—diversifying career paths is the way to go! |

Many tech billionaires dropped out of universities and invented what we enjoy today. They all have one thing in common, they studied Computer Engineering before dropping out and went to tech schools. |

Tech this, tech that..... Don't be delusional, go to school and study relevantly, AI will erode all the coding and UI/UX. Alot of big investors have invested in AI (like Musk). Just go school |

Babatundehy:Tell them. I think most of the people who downplay university education are the people who dropped out because they couldn't cope with the study, those who lack fund to get university education and those who have no interest in getting university education, you know, mentally lazy people. And yet, you would see them end up forging University degree certificates to get jobs when their skill acquisition certificate is not enough for the employers |

IAM4BAT4plus4:A nation without robust educational system is a dead nation. University is the bedrock of developments for any nation. May be the fact that we run substandard education in Nigeria is reason why some of you think universities are useless and the knowledge it impacts is useless. We need lecturers, medical doctors, pharmacists, engineers, teachers, scientists. And you think six months tech skills acquisition programmes would be enough? If you like, don't sponsor your kids education properly |

People are coming to realise that lots of social issues of today have been handled by previous generations, and are reverting back to it. Either it is tech jobs, freelancing, self-employed, part-time, remote work, working from home, etc, all boils down to one single fact, and it is that people are tired of being employees under stagnant salaries that is constantly under attack by inflation, tax man, reduction. Our parents might be uneducated, but they didnt pass through the challenges current generations are passing through. They may engage in small trade, but they operate outside the eyes of unfair taxations, control their time, not under rude boss, and their income was proportionate to their input, not stagnant. The idea that you cannot turn eba for your family because you have to rush to work, but you can go buy same eba in a nearby restaurant for you boss. Are you mad? ![]() Even worse, you are expected to be grateful for that, afterall, more idiots out there are waiting to replace you if you dare mess. Even worse, some enter uni go study philosophy, mass comm, drama arts etc, like, are you normal? those courses are for Scandinavians students where they will live a wealthy life even if they didnt go to school, not for third worlders where your survival is at stake. |

FutureFocus:University education is not just about the classroom, it is the world in it that you meet, the various ideas, culture, beliefs, philosophies you'd encounter... That why we have more young guys misbehaving and not cultured because they lack that social education. It's called University because of it Universality (coming together of lecturers and learners from different backgrounds and way of life). Never miss it if you can! |

Apus:There are better paying high income generating skills you could learn within 6 months so the youth are asking, why spend five years in a university classroom plus another year in NYSC only to become redundant looking for jobs? At least people are working remotely doing tech jobs. My brother tech ti take over. A look at the ten most valuable companies on the planet shows that eight out of ten are tech companies. Bill Gates might not be the richest man on earth today because he gave away his wealth to charity but let me burst your brain, his company Microsoft is the most valuable company on earth valued at $3.5 trillion. Nigeria, a nation of 250 million is dreaming of having a $1trilliim dollar economy in 2030 , just dream oh but today Microsoft an ordinary company is worth $3.5trillion almost all the whole wealth of Africa. Think about that. https://newswirengr.com/2025/09/10/top-10-most-valuable-companies-in-the-world/ |

princefunmmy:You have a point there, we make friends , learns way of the others, discipline, meeting deadlines, socializing , building confidence, and all those examinations drills that imbibe discipline into us , all these are the parts of it but the universities need to do more in research and transfer of useful skills and knowledge to the youths that will encourage the upcoming ones to follow the route |

FutureFocus:You are very correct! There is a disconnect between the Tertiary instructions and the industry. I have been working with organizations trying to address this. However, we have discovered that if we cannot influence the government to make certain policies it won't work so we hope we'd get a chance to get policy makers to air us. Let me speak for Engineering. Imagine a Professor who is only limited by machines in the school workshop (a Foreign trained Professor). The problem is the machines he was taught with are outdated and there been new developments and more advanced machines and technologies, he knows about them but he hasn't got a chance to work with them so he can't fully teach the students on these technologies. If we can get the industry to synergize with the academia then, we will start making meaningful progress |

Because leadership in Nigeria is not visionary. Those in authority do not know what nation building means. They are like parents who birth children without objective. Just give them food and clothes and that is all, that is parenting they say. They have no purpose for the citizens and the citizens like wayward children of irresponsible parents roam around without leadership and jump into anything that puts food on their table. But visionary parents lead the family along lines of legacy, legacy ventures, legacy visions, trans generational achievemens. They may be money making or not but they grow a people into a formidable force on earth. I repeat for the umpteenth time. What government should be doing with its people, its resources is to lead them TO GLOBAL ACHIEVEMENTS. You can sector it, you can laser the vision into even one task, one that puts the nation on the map of the world, just one positive thing that makes your nationals renowned and world beaters. China selected industrialization. They may not be so good in financials, in commerce, in sports, in entertainment, in ICT, in many things but they had a vision to dominate the world of 'making things', just as Japan decades ago, just as Germany centuries ago. And today they are a force. Where is leadership of this country DELIBERATELY leading Nigeria to. What vision do they have for the average citizen to elevate them to global dominance. That is where you will find their time and treasure invested in. Folks, look for visionaries and empower them into leadership positions to superintend over your future and that of your generation or live all your lives on earth in mediocrity. The japa syndrome is symptomatic of children leaving the homes of their wayward, carefree, visionless parents and never coming back. It is not a credit to the country or a badge of honour. |

princefunmmy:You nailed it! Use our college of fisheries for instance, how many of them teach practical fishing, or own fishing vessels or how many of the professors really have fishing experience, or do invites knowledgeable and experience fishermen to teach the student? Lecture notes alone is not enough, which fishing skill are then now transferring to their students? Theories I can ready online? Lecture notes are available online now unlike before where students depend on lecture notes from lecturers , people learn online now more reason you see a faculty of computer science taking their computers to Kazzem the road side repairer , who possibly learnt on YouTube , yes there should be synergy In search of experience Harvard has invited experience people around the world to teach their students, including our wole Soyinka, Madam Nike of the Nike Art Gallery and Chimamanda |
