The Phantom is the top of the line Rolls Royce model. Rolls Royce Phantoms have been produced since 1925, making it the longest-used car model nameplate in automotive history. Earlier generations of Rolls-Royce Phantoms consisted of the chassis and engine, then arrangements were made to manufacture the body and interior, customised to the buyer's requests. Customers could commission famous coach builders like H.J. Mulliner, Hooper and Park Ward to build the body and interior. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. Rolls Royce New Phantom (1925–1931) The original Rolls Royce Phantom was the replacement for the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost (the most iconic Rolls Royce ever made). 3,512 of the cars were made. It was manufactured in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Only the chassis and mechanical parts were produced by Rolls-Royce. The body was made and fitted by a coachbuilder selected by the owner. The Rolls Royce company called it the New Phantom, but enthusiasts now refer to it as the Phantom 1.

Rolls Royce Phantom 2 (1929–1935) The Phantom 2 was only produced in the UK (the US factory was closed). 1,681 cars were produced, 1,400 "regular" cars, 281 Continentals and 9 experimental cars. The Continentals were shorter and had a stiffer suspension.

Rolls Royce Phantom 3 (1936–1939) The Rolls Royce Phantom 3 was the number 1 state car in Nigeria for many years. A landaulet version was used by heads of state of Nigeria including Sir John Stuart Macpherson, Sir James Wilson Robertson, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Major General Johnson Thomas Umanakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi and General Yakubu Gowon. It was the final large pre-war Rolls-Royce. Introduced in 1936, it replaced the Phantom 2 and it was the only V12 Rolls-Royce until the 1998 introduction of the Silver Seraph. It is the first of the three V12-powered Rolls-Royce Phantoms, with the 2003-2017 Rolls-Royce Phantom 7 and 2018- Rolls-Royce Phantom 8 being the other two. 727 V12 Phantom 3 chassis were constructed from 1936 to 1939. The Phantom 3 was the last car that Henry Royce worked on – he died, aged 70, a year into the Phantom 3's development. Rolls Royce Phantom 4 (1950–1956) The Rolls Royce Phantom 4 is a very rare car that was produced by Rolls Royce. Only 18 of the cars were made and they were mainly sold to Arab, British and European royalty. Rolls Royce did not sell the car to just anyone. They first determined whether the customer was a fit and proper person to buy the car. Rolls Royce had agreements with most of the owners that they would never sell the car to third parties, but would instead return the car to the Rolls Royce company if they no longer needed it. Queen Elizabeth II had two of the cars, a personal car that she bought before she became queen and an official car. She used the official car during her tour of Southern Nigeria. It was a landaulet. That car was returned to the Rolls Royce company in 2002. Rolls Royce Phantom 5 (1959–1968) The Rolls Royce Phantom 5 was introduced in 1959 and a specially made version was ordered for the Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. This car had the Nigerian coat of arms on its center console. This car was auctioned in France in 2011. This is a video of the visit of Ghanaian Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah to Nigeria in 1959. You can see him in Tafawa Balewa's Rolls Royce Phantom 5 during his visit to Yaba Trade School. You can also see the Governor-General's Rolls Royce Phantom 3 during the dinner party. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOoWT-uFwCM?si=_XEkrgd9UTr2EehM Video of Tafawa Balewa in the Phantom 5 and Nnamdi Azikiwe in the Phantom 3 during Nigeria's first anniversary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1Kk2G3tzIM?si=H7TTpgkKXNSLiyC4 General Yakubu Gowon also used this car. A Rolls Royce Phantom 5 was also bought to serve as the official car of the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK. 518 of the cars were made and famous owners included Queen Elizabeth II, John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Elton John and Liberace. Rolls Royce Phantom 6 (1968–1990) The Rolls Royce Phantom 6 was the last Rolls Royce Phantom with a separate chasis. Most of the coachwork was created by Mulliner Park Ward, usually in limousine form, although a handful of landaulets were made. 374 of the cars were made. We used black and silver license plates in Nigeria when I was a kid. The license plates of most Federal Government cars began with the letters FGN (Federal Government of Nigeria). FGN 1 was reserved for the president (even though he usually did not use license plates). As the representative of the president in the UK, the Nigerian High Commissioner used the license plate FGN 1. This Rolls Royce Phantom 6 was made for the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK. It was the official car for many years. The license plate is FGN 1 and you can see the Nigerian flag on the plaque on the roof of the car. Rolls Royce Phantom 7 (2003–2017) The giant engineering company, Vickers, owned Rolls Royce Motors (which made Rolls Royce and Bentley cars), Rolls Royce PLC (which made aircraft jet engines) and other businesses that made armoured tanks and other military equipment (Nigeria bought Vickers Eagle tanks from them). Vickers decided to sell Rolls Royce Motors in 1999 and both BMW and Volkswagen bid for the company. Volkswagen won the bid, but BMW and the families of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce were not happy. BMW had a deal to supply engines for Rolls Royce and Bentley cars and they threatened to stop supplying the engines. Volkswagen began as a car for the masses (folks wagon) and the Rolls Royce families, which still held the rights to the name, believed that it did not gel with their brand. A deal was eventually reached in which Volkswagen got the original Rolls Royce factory and the Bentley name, while BMW got the Rolls Royce name and it was to build a new factory. BMW created a new company called Rolls Royce Motor Cars and it built a new factory in the UK. The Rolls Royce Phantom 7 was the first car that was produced by the new company. The car was made in sedan/limousine, drop head coupe and coupe body styles. The Rolls Royce Phantom 7 was less exclusive than all previous Phantom models, 10,327 of the cars were produced. It was the first new Phantom in 35 years.

Double R phantom 2 is way older than the zoo. What a shame. E sure me say then Nigerians dy use leaves as wrapper but other countries (western) don advance to the extent they get 4 wheels. But Nigerians then and now still dy do ogun and ifa (not even for their own progress, but to pull their fellow Nigerian down.). |
