“Any School Fees You Struggle To Pay Is No Longer Fees But Ransom” – Woman by Idemma(op): 12:59pm On Sep 15, 2025
A Nigerian woman, Nenye Uzowulu, has advised parents to carefully consider the schools they send their children to, saying that school fees they struggle to pay are no longer regular tuition but “ransom.”

Nenye Uzowulu shared her thoughts on Facebook on Monday, cautioning parents against being pressured by private school owners over rising fees.

“Any school fees you struggle to pay is no longer school fees but Ransom! Take your kids to where you can afford. Same as HouseRent,” she wrote.

Explaining her reasoning, Uzowulu said she knows a woman who is constantly in debt, taking loans to pay her children’s school fees.

“I know a woman who is living in debt now. She will always collect loan to pay school fees. Like what kind of mother are you?” she added.

I agree with her.

As much as things are expensive and standard has dropped, parents these days act like some of us didn't eat eba from U1yr or attend neighbourhood schools. They put their kids in certain schools because it is trending or it has a big image. That way they can say my child is attending XYZ. Time for parties and extra curricular activities, you can easily differentiate their kids from the main big man children. Inferiority complex go come dey worry the innocent child.

My brother put his child in one big school.
The school has basketball court and wear up to 3 uniforms (Mon+Tue, Wed+Thur, then Fri). There is an old proven school in his area and he left it to drive across town for schoolrun. No be juju be that? School done resume and hypertension dey do am. I tell am welldone!

Houses nko?
They all want POP house.
Landlords would build one tiny thing, then agents would start shouting "POP, fully tileedddd _in a closed gated estate, Band A electricity, access to tarred road, nearby supermarkets!" Shebi the POP is this one falling on our heads? House that you cannot breathe well inside. Whereas there are old houses with big windows and kitchen. Dining space and balconies. Just repaint.
Walahi na humans dey complicate their lives unnecessarily. Work within your income class, please.

Some parents claim they're making the sacrifice to give their children the best.

I nor dey do pass my sef.....my Kids attend a well known government school with sound teachers and modern facilities, attendance is bae, with serious and dedicated teachers, their uniform is impeccably neat, with less than 25 pupils in each class with 2 teachers.
She always tops her class and competition is high.
My son too comes 1st in his class.

My daughter represent her school at every events and she comes back with truck loads of gifts,at one occasion i was so proud seeing my lil daughter at our stadium podium shaking hands with the person that represented our delta state governor earlier this year.

Same excuse my brother gives.
When I point out to him a quality alternative, he would say his mind didn't go with that one. As at last week he said he cannot sleep.

Some parents are the ones putting themselves under unnecessary pressure....

There was a time when one of my uncle came to meet my dad to help him out so that he can pay his kids school fees......At first,my dad paid but advised him to withdraw the kids from the private school and enrol them in a well known govt school...This oncle of mine, who's equally a farmer took that as an offense and starting keeping malice with my dad......

People hate good advice because they expect you to be empathetic towards their plight. You hear things like how can my brother watch me send his niece or nephew to public school...

We can't really blame some parents. Some decisions we make early in life have long-lasting, if not eternal, impacts. There are certain schools you attend, and you just know that it will take only luck or the grace of God for one to rise above a certain level. The world is so competitive now.

Just last week on X, I saw some Nigerians regretting that they didn’t study Engineering in Unilag. Who wouldn’t? You just have to see the number of graduates getting jobs in top global companies like Bloomberg, Google, etc., straight after school. The same goes for their medical students. Their level of networking is just something else. While other people are hustling for NYSC, those ones have already completed their online interviews with Bloomberg, US medical schools, etc. I've read the same pattern with CU students.

Same education as someone who studied the same course in e.g., faraway Taraba State, but the networking, friendship? That’s what makes the difference.

As long as they’re not doing it blindly or getting into needless debt or blind competition, omo, we can’t really blame them. Many adults today developed low self-esteem because of their poor background. By poor, it doesn’t necessarily mean lack of money, but poor exposure and mentality.

Struggle to push your kids to good schools. Its part of parenting sacrifice.
Later in life, the kids will leverage on connections they were able to make in schools.

Some connections can't be made in certain schools.

Ransom??!! No body force it on those parents, it's due to copying of others that's why many individuals go above that financial capacity. Imagine an individual without job but the fees of one child is above 100k n he has 3 kids.

I disagree with this.

No matter how wealthy you are, you will still find it hectic and sacrificial to pay school fees.

This is because your choice of school for your kids will largely depend on your income level, first, and your taste & desire for quality education for your kids.

So, if your income level supports your taste, you will find yourself doling out 10 to 15% of your annual income to pay school fees. Afterall, you cant be financially well off and send your beloved kids to a public school na. Reason am.

Soon, you will see yourself making an effort to pay school fees. This is further compounded by the fact that every money you spend has an opportunity cost. This means, there is another more important thing or problem that the money could be used to solve. Yes, feeding is more important than schooling. Hard fact.

So, when you think of the other things you could do with the school fees you are about to "dash" to the school, it becomes more sacrificial and painful

Black humans who pay taxes and have taxes collected by governments on their behalf, really complicate their lives, by struggling to pay school fees for their children.

Why can’t we expect the government to work within its budget to employ well paid teachers for the free education of all children?

Why do we expect the governments to just steal our commonwealth huh

You people don't seem to realize what this evil pathetic government is doing to Nigerians, they keep hunting Nigerians no matter the level we dropped to just to survive, you dropped from 50k to 30k they will surely enact a policy that we make the school to increase from 30k, and you find the one of 20k,... I come to realize that until Nigerias start dying in thousands before this God forsaken government will satisfy.. am not surprised when they say they are going to decriminalized suicide... Because they know that there remain yet to enact policies is going to make lots of Nigerians to commit suicide cry
