Most of the people commenting on this post are seriously guilty of the same crime. Let's do the investigation: How much is your monthly salary? How much is your annual rent? How many kids do you have? How much is your kids' school fee in a term? Which type of phone do you use? What is the price of the phone? How much do you spend on data subscription monthly? Does your data usage bring you any income? How much do you spend on your babe monthly? |

Sonnobax15:That is not a good advise from your dad, considering how poorly these public schools are being run. Even the teachers in these public schools don't put their children there. He should've rather advise him to look for a school that is within his budget or the one he can easily afford. You dad should've simply tell him to do something about the situation because he can't keep borrowing money to pay his children school fees withiout being specifically on what he should do. Sometime, people found themselves in some situations they hope to get out from soonest, you don't need to downgrade them at that moment but to advise in line of what you think they deserve. |

I don't agree with this In Nigeria of today, even those who could comfortably pay their ward school fees are now struggling to pay it With the rising cost of everything including school fees, it's not easy at all |

Some of the companies employing thousands we know of today are owned by people who funded their education through menial jobs and those whom their parents sold lands, possessions and even borrowed to see them through school. Educating your children is like investment and investments are about risks and sacrifice. |

Acidosis:I agree with everything you have stated. However, the way to overcome the challenge of poor exposure is via the Internet. I am one of those who went to a no-name school because I wasn't allowed to leave my state of residence, but with constant voracious research and reading online articles, I overcame the school aspect. I have participated in EduBridge Financial Class, and honestly, I was the only student who studied at a university in Eastern Nigeria. The majority were ABUAD, UI, UNILAG and of course, CU. Finance plays a huge role, rather than just the name of the school. I could afford trips to Lagos whenever I wanted. I had a place to live. Most importantly, the drive and ambition led me to EduBridge. I have conversed with accounting students from a sister university, and they did not know what KPMG and PwC were all about. Ordinarily, they should have as their school had a bigger name than mine. But I knew about the Big4 more than them all thanks to the Internet. My friend had participated in the US embassy-sponsored Grad Program, and he had taken the GRE, but because of his low score, he was not qualified. He saw the application online and applied. I have applied to a popular investment bank on behalf of a senior schoolmate who is a math guru. I saw the job ad in a WhatsApp group, told him he can be qualified because of his high grade. He gave me the go-ahead; I applied, and he got called up for the test. Interestingly, the ad stated they want First Class in Physics or Mathematics applicants but my schoolmate had a 4.46 CGPA in mathematics. I reasoned that with a stellar and American-style investment bank CV and cover letter, he would be called up, so I applied. Where did I see the CV template? On the Internet. He was the only one with a 2.1 out of 8 persons and the only grad from a uni East of the Niger. Young people should learn to use the Internet for useful purposes. It is the greatest invention after electricity. |

tosyne2much:The solution to this and the woman's post is to have few children. Nothing beats having few children. Nothing, absolutely nothing, defeats having few children. That is the cheat code. |

Googledotcom:This too; there are good public schools. Parents can enrol their children there, employ the services of a good math tutor to enable the children to hone their math skills and most importantly, be readily aware of scholarship information on the Internet. In fact, educated parents from lower-middle-class families should prep their children for scholarship opportunities for tertiary education so they don't have to pay for it. Get other people to pay for the education. It is more of the drive and ambition than just the school. Location plays a role, quite alright, but that drive is important. The Internet is available for any ambitious individual to excel. |

So, I'll speak on this matter Your schoolfees reflect what you will get for your kids. Period. If you pay a little, you get a little. If you pay a lot, you get a lot more. How much more you can get from either a public or private school is entirely up to you. And this is where paying more school fees matters. Your mentality and choices are determined by the environment and people surrounding you. Gerrard59, your post was spot on. But the number of Public School parents who will do what you suggested is less than 1%. The number of Private School parents who will do it is greater than 30%. That is why when Nigerian students win competitions abroad, they are usually from wealthy homes attending nice private schools. I teach Math and Science with a foreign curriculum, all my students live in highbrow areas. Middle class parents don't see the value in what I'm teaching. They've heard of it from wealthy parents but their mentality is still old school and traditional: Math and English taught the old Naija method, throw in some poorly coordinated "robotics" training and they're satisfied Meanwhile, I'm prepping my 8 yr old to compete against East Asian kids and attend university at Tsinghua, MIT, Stanford or Loughborough. My 2 year old, I'm unbothered that he can't hold a pencil (I see people from lower income schools crowing happily about their toddlers writing). Why should I be, I gave him a simplified Rubik's Cube and have been throwing so much science and math at him since he was 1. My oldest won a medal at an international math Olympiad, I have been working on her critical thinking skills. My teen nephews have been practicing essay writing skills since primary school, with a dedicated teacher. A friend's child just got a swim scholarship from Germany. My mentality is a 1% and when I lived in a highbrow area, we parents constantly swapped tips and ideas on how to push our kids forward. Our kids were training academics and sports, just because we all are planning on them writing SATs and IGCSE and we know that the essay must showcase the kids perfectly. Our kids are in Primary and Junior secondary schools with 10 year goal plans for them. You'll never find that kind of thinking from people who are struggling to survive or just got out of survival mode. You'll only find that from people who know that hunger is not a problem anymore. |

Middle Class schools, they do homework daily. Just repetition and repetition. And here's what people don't know: the quality of textbooks used in Nigeria vary wildly. There are publishers that won't sell to your school if they think the order is too small. There are good textbooks that are too expensive for most schools (I've seen Farafina social studies textbooks that you won't find in schools paying less than N400,000/term). N1mil/term is using British textbooks that explain Math better and give challenging past questions. Your child is basically handicapped and you have no idea, you're seeing them pass but don't realize that they're learning with the equivalent of a C-grade textbook vs others learning with an A-grade textbook. In my Math and Science cohort, I use UK and Singapore's system. I teach 5 yr old Astronomy and it isn't just watching YouTube videos: they have to go out and observe the night sky. My son builds science models and understands Physics, we use pH papers and tuning forks to learn Science in primary schools. That's SS1 experiments being run. Same thing happens in the Robotics competitions: wealthy schools demolish their counterparts. They have access to the best materials and they do it at home, for fun. Your kids attending their schools will make friends with a classmate who has more Lego and STEM toys than you've ever seen and that's how your child will start their Mechanical Engineering life, in Pry 4. You simply cannot say "cheap will do". What every parent should make sure is that they're getting bang for their buck, so the more you spend, the more you should see value. |

She is is hundred percent right. This has been my principle since I started, that my children school fee shouldn't be more than half of my salary, any thing more than that I no fit oooooo. And it pretty work for me, I no fit kill myself oooo. I sow some of my mate, who enrolled their kid on high expenses school (some of them just because of how the school bus looks and how the school uniform looks) when they were having one kid struggle as the family. expanded and as things get harder. They keep on changing their kid school almost every team, to adjust to their income, until we finally meet again in the same school of my. |

And for connections, Secondary and University is where the strong connections are made. Even the right Primary school can mean you'll never get a visa denial at a lot of embassies (people golf with Ambassadors and their kids attend birthday parties and camp together). Finally, All these cries of: "your child is using washing machine they're lazy" (seriously, what skills or moral does hand washing impart) "Your child ate 2 pieces of meat, they're greedy and lack home training" (when they need the protein, that's why average Naija height is 5'7" ) "Your child is attending expensive school, they're spoilt/stupid and can't pass JAMB" (none are planning on schooling here) or "you're only doing it to show off" Etc Is just Nigerian pride trying to make itself feel better for its' poverty. Aka "I can't have it and I can't be humble, so I'll denigrate it to make myself feel better". You know we love only 2 things: "I better pass my neighbor" and "if I can't have it, it must be nonsense". |

You can easily say this when you are in Nigeria with different options, in abroad the options are limited. Meanwhile give your children the best, education is still the best thing you can give to them |
