Analysing What Went Wrong In Hilda Baci's Jollof World Record Attempt by Dogalmighty17(op): 11:54pm On Sep 13, 2025
From the moment pictures started going out of the pot Hilda Bacci planned to use for her record setting attempt to cook the world's largest pot of jollof rice, anyone with a fair background in physics and possibly material science would have sensed something was off. There was no way that pot was going to serve.

See, physics is impassionate and brutal. It's laws are set from the beginning of creation. For Hilda's record to have gone through without a hitch, the laws of physics would have been broken.

I don't know what the dimensions the pot of galvanized steel she used are. I do however know that they were far too insufficient. The math alone was going to be problematic. Her initial plan was to use 250 bags of rice for that pot. Assuming she used 50kg bags of rice, that's already 12.5 tons. She later reduced the quantity to 200 bags which is 10 tons of rice or 10,000 kg. A look at that pot and its supporting legs clearly indicate it is no way rated to handle such a load. Disaster was already afoot.

Heat causes metal to expand. This expansion, weakens the metallic bonds that holds the atoms that make up the metal in the pot. The weight of the rice in the pot further strains the structure of the pot, hence the collapse.

She and her team did not consult widely nor did they meet qualified engineers for counsel. Today's disaster was inevitable as a result.

Re: Analysing What Went Wrong In Hilda Baci's Jollof World Record Attempt by brain54(m):
The leg and weight of the pot held...

Until it was being lifted for weighing.

Everything went well until that point.

The problem was the uneven distribution of the weight during lifting with the rope that was supported by the crane.

The weight wasn't distributed fairly and you can watch the video to see how the pot caved inwards from the point the ropes where attached.

Ofcourse, it still boils down to physics and the pot weakened by heat as you suggest.

But if they had a better way to attach those ropes and distribute the weight before lifting that pot the incident of the caving or collapse wouldn't have occurred.

It's good attempt for Hilda baci. She has done well and achieved the most important aim of her mission which is marketing and boosting her brand.

I like her courage for her attempt. I did learn many things from her in the area of brand boosting etc.

Like I said she did well and I congratulate her!

The collapsed pot and the point of weighing was a different aspect of her ambition.
That was just to confirm the volume of rice cooked
She achieved her aim, as cooking was fully completed, and tasting partially started.
Lessons learnt, sure she will give it another trial

Thank you for this comment.

I wonder why some persons are ignoring her entire achievement to focus on what's not relevant. Her goal was to set a record for the largest pot of jollof rice ever cooked, not to construct the largest cooking pot in the world or the most tasty pot of jollof rice .

I just watched the woman on DW tv...

I feel very proud of her as a Nigerian. For once Nigeria wasn't talked about in negative light but for something positive in the international community.

The most important point I took from that was that they didn't even talk about or remotely mention the collapsed pot.

It's some persimist folks back here that are focusing on the negatives!

But just by looking at this pic you can see the error

At the center one of the wielding straight line is not complete. It should be 2 lines

For that law of physics to be suspended, that means there was a law more than physics; and that was GOD AT WORK THROUGH GRACE AND MERCY

Metal planks would have been placed underneath the pot to evenly spread the weight for lifting. Simple physics!
Re: Analysing What Went Wrong In Hilda Baci's Jollof World Record Attempt by richiemcgold:
Maybe they should have Just created some handles for the pot instead of using stands. Then fix it to a crane. A crane would have held it up in the air for as many hours as possible with cooking flames blazing under. 🤥🤔🤔

.. sense no go kee me. grin grin

.. congrats Hilda ✌️🇳🇬👍

Simple physics, the aluminum pot used to cook the pot was more malleable when hot.

Sot it would bend easily especially with the weight of all those bags of rice.

Forget Physics... Forget Metallurgy

Did she set the record.... Yes or No ?

Let us therefore celebrate her.

She and her sponsors have learnt from this attempt.

They will do better next time

I don't even know what they were thinking. Engineering is far from Africa... Prove that our educational system is complete nonsense

The problem with the pot is the pot don't have shift within, there should have be a shift that can hold it tight from the middle just like where car engine are. You can't build a house without adding a puller in the middle, it will surely collapse.

so that pot was made of aluminum. That was really a risk she take.
