Lagos Assembly Demands Withdrawal Of Appointments, Summons HOS by Racoon(op): 7:33am On Sep 17, 2025
In a stern move to assert its constitutional authority, the Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to direct the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, to withdraw the appointment letters of several agency heads who began their roles without legislative confirmation.

The directive was issued during a plenary session where lawmakers expressed their frustration over the executive’s repeated disregard for due process.

The Assembly has also instructed the State Accountant General to immediately cease the payment of salaries and allowances to the affected appointees

Furthermore, it has summoned the Head of Service to appear before the House to explain why these individuals were permitted to assume their duties without the required statutory approval.

The Speaker, Dr. Mudashiru Obasa, described the issue as a recurring matter that disrespects the legislative arm of government.
“It is unnecessary for the Head of Service to continue to ignore the directive of the House of Assembly.

“The House allocates funds to these agencies, yet their heads treat the Assembly with disrespect,” he said.

The lawmakers argued that bypassing the confirmation process undermines the principle of separation of powers. They cited Sections 126 and 198 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandate that the legislature must confirm certain public officers appointed by the executive.

The House’s resolution stands as a firm reminder that all branches of government must adhere to the rule of law and respect established checks and balances.

And na that Iron go burn you if you don't approach some issues with sense. No be the same Iron burn Fubara for hand when he thought he was in control and can do anyhow. No be everything be gragra. Some people can do it and get away with it like Ganduje, Akpabio. Even Atiku tried it with Obasanjo and up till date he's liking his fingers and regretting secretly.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

Constitutional matters must be separated from personal ego because it's a sure catalyst for confrontation.

The matter of appointments into critical positions require legislative backing in order for such appointments to be legal.

Any deviation is a slap in the face of the Constitution from which each arm of government drives its powers.

At the national level, the Executive must seek the approval of the NASS for appointments to become valid in the eyes of the law.

The issue therefore is not a power tussle between Governor Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Obasa.

Far from it!

It's a constitutional mandate that requires the Executive to submit the names of those for appointment to the Legislature to either confirm or reject such nominees.

Sanwo-Olu: come down from your high horse and do the right thing.

Sanwo-Olu should know that by now, the only reason Obasa has not impeached him is because their slave master will not give the approval
