That building has facilities managers.

Them go hear am

There is going to be a fkton of blame passing

I read somewhere it is an inverter issue

Which may mean my pet fear has become flesh - lithium battery explosion

But the building must have have piss poor design or may be carpet everywhere. Because your fire is usually contained where it comes out unless you have carpeting to spread it
I just got off the phone with someone who works close to the building , I was told the building has just elevator (lift) and no staircase for emergency evacuation . I don’t know how true that is but if that is the case , it means the building has poor design as far as safety is concerned like u rightly pointed out.

I was also told all doors to each floor are accessible via ID card key/biometrics . Immediately the fire started , those stopped working due to the outage of power . So the workers were confined to their respective floors hence why they were jumping through the windows of their respective floors .

Omo! The facility managers have a whole lot of questions to answer , but then again this is Nigeria sha anything goes .

I learnt there were fatalities due to the smoke some of the workers inhaled . If that is true , I wonder why it has not made the news yet ; maybe UBA is using their influence to suppress the news sha

I don't think Afriland built it from scratch

They probably bought it or leased it. That building has been there before Afriland was formed.

Maybe Facility manager don complain, but nothing was done. This is Nigeria sha.

Even if they bought the building, they could’ve modified it to include safety futures like smoke detector and automatic water sprinkler system na .

Dem really fumble in that aspect and obviously didn’t do enough to safeguard the life of their workers.

As recent as last month we had the fire alarm go off in the tower housing our office and we all had to make it down to the assembly point downstairs ASAP via the emergency exit . It was discovered it was just a minor incident caused by electrical issue on one of the floors that made the alarm go off sounding for everyone to evacuate the building . The floor was isolated by the facility managers , the incident was properly dealt with and we were later allowed to go back to our respective work stations after everything had been sorted out.

I believe if that kind of system is in place in that Afriland towers , they would’ve evacuated the building and the whole fire incident won’t have gone that bad like it did .

They are mental, why won't they be staircases or emergency exit
Fatalities as in deaths?

Let me try and explain,

Israel invaded Israel on October 7, killed Israelis, kidnapped Israelis but somehow it was Hamas guys on images and videos celebrating with dead bodies and spitting on them shouting Allahu Akbar, (Okay maybe it was AI edit from Israel to superimpose Hamas faces on the videos)

Now Israel took the hostages and kept them inside Hamas tunnels without Hamas people knowing while Israel has been killing Hamas members because of hostages but Hamas members still refused to release the hostages Israel kept with them

Hope you are understanding gradually
Crazy isn't it?

That building ought to have smoke detectors which should’ve long alerted them while the fire was still at the initial stage . That way, an evacuation of the building would’ve been done quite early and nobody would’ve been injured .

It will be a shame if that modern office building doesn’t have smoke detector and automatic water sprinkler sef .
Sprinklers and auto smoke detector systems are usually designed and provided for at the blueprint level......... post construction addition is difficult to achieve.
This fire incident clearly shows it wasn't preconceived.

Yes death o.

I was told a nursing mother who just returned from maternity leave was stamped in the scramble when everyone was trying to find an exit. (PS: This is an unofficial report but an eyewitness account )

Also , there were those who passed out due to the heavy smoke and were rushed to the hospital and yet to be in stable condition as at yesterday evening .

Then it’s a shame that a big organization like that declaring over a trillion Naira in profit will have such big office space that lacks basic safety and emergency measures .

Yes and no. You may not be able to deploy sprinklers, but you can likely deploy a hydrant line

And you can always deploy a fire alarm system. Detectors would be mounted on the ceiling or slab. Call points on the wall.

What I find really surprising is how fire got out of control

Then again EVERY major accident NEVER occurs in isolation. There are always multiple warning incidents before hand which are ignored.

When you have a close call God is not protecting you. He is WARNING your ar.se to pay attention or you will not be so lucky next time.

The next moment, it becomes evident that this country will soon catch fire.

This incident is very poor optics for the bank..... again, its alarming how much is neglected or swept under the carpet because of corruption.....
We likely have series of maladies here from,
Quack packaged solar system installation...
Kickbacks to organisation insiders..
Use of substandard and inflated materials...etc.

Whenever I remember sujimotos case in Enugu state my blood boils.

How can a young man use renderings, twitter propaganda, image washers and fake articles to deceive the public of his ability to handle contracts worth mega billions.....
Worst of all construction contracts where mistakes are hardly corrected and lead to loss of huge funds or in worst cases loss of lives.

What kind of school boy fraud and guts is that........ I sometimes don't know what's wrong with people.
The change we seek in Nigeria begins with us.

Where is the hope, once this militants properly encroach the southwest through kwara route as has already started with their weekly probe attacks and North Central for they now have a firm foot in bagos Niger state.

Lagos and Abuja then becomes within reach.....their end goal is just monetary gains, lucrative kidnapping for ransom and murder that's all....... Let's pretend like we don't know Lagos and Abuja offers the best stock.
I rest my case.........everyone should just have emergency funds stashed away.
Hermes speed!

I have a keen interest in following in-depth survivor stories from major disasters especially Titanic and 9/11

I suspect there will be a few more deaths from smoke inhalation in that building from the video I saw of them crowding around the windows, and expect more stories like these over the coming days and weeks

No country wey no fit fall oh. What can ordinary people on the street do? If say Naija senate change the constitution to extend terms to 7yrs each and unlimited terms, what will we do? what is your rational for removing him. All the army chiefs and political elites are on board with it

Putin has been president for like 25yrs Cuba, China, North Korea especially those communist countries that is common.
If not for western influence "spreading democracy" Saddam and Ghadaffi will be there till today and replace themselves with their children. Almost all Arab countries have long rulers

If not for death Abacha would run it. All 5 political parties already endorsed him

Actually we might even say long sit tight leaders are almost equal if not more than regular democracy
The bolded part is what I told some people many years ago, but they opposed it. Their argument was that Nigeria is different from other African countries. I then asked them, “What would you do if Abacha were still ruling today?” but they had no tangible response. If not for his death, Abacha would have ruled this nation for over 20 years or more, unless a coup removed him from the throne, or death, as the case may be.
I know many people will still not agree with the post simply because you were in Nigeria. But if you had been born in Cameroon, what would you have done?

Let me help you answer the question:
ABSOLUTE NOTHING!!!

You may not be wrong. The person I spoke with told me one of the workers who escaped "unhurt" was coughing and spitting out black Saliva/Phlegm in her presence.

Somehow the local media has been quite on reporting number of deaths from the incident. I have a feeling the safety concerns as per this incident will be swept under the carpet and nothing will really come out of any investigation/inquiry.

The amount of unavoidable deaths that occur in this country is just crazy, people are basically one health or situational emergency away from losing their lives.

There are people who would have serious health complications much long after this incident is forgotten due to the smoke they’ve inhaled before they were rescued .

Normally people like that should be able to sue the bank in the future but I doubt if such lawsuit will go anywhere if they file it in Nigeria . That’s Nigeria being Nigeria

you know how it goes.

years ago i saw a delivery note of a washing machine for a journalsit in teh office

we had a crazy issue during a fuel scarcity with a lunatic dealer who attacked dpr officals. we had all been silently praying for the mans downfall because he was a grade A asshole . but he had too many ties to the right people. The story memory holed in front of us from the newspapers website

if any serious blogger reports on this you can be sure they will slap them with cyberstalking

well maybe SR will, but then they will drop plenty of exaggerations that will dilute the story

if you did not catch a screnshot of it at the time - it never happened
