Yes, the market side. Some shops were affected

some people however say that abacha was poisoned
that they figured the best vector to use for him [the prostitutes]
Abacha’s problem was greed, chop alone and die alone. But anyone with that mindset to remain in power must be wise enough to build a circle of loyal allies, no one will betray the pot of his soup. Look at Paul Biya’s case, those around him don’t even want him to step down, because they gain more from his power than he does himself. That’s the kind of team that will fight tooth and nail for you, even in your absence. This is what "I think" Abacha lack in his government.

I don't think so. The electrical wiring of most of those houses they converted to shop in that axis is terrible. Also, some of them keep their generator and fuel on their respective floors instead of the ground floor.

So some of those fire incidents are caused by electric spark when NEPA brings light and then the fire is escalated by the fuel and generator they keep on their shop floors. The fact that the buildings are too close to each other makes it difficult for the fire to be put off by fire service and volunteers. I have witnessed some of those fire before.

The statement UBA put out is even more kweezy and lacks empathy except no one died sha
they will do everything to avoid admitting guilt in public because that opens them up to liability.

they will be looking for who will take the fall

everyone is going to be buck passing now.

consultants, Facility managers , vendors - even LASG - who ARE supposed to inspect before signing facilities as fit for habitation

i will honestly not be surprised to find that madam elumelu owns some of the companies directly involved in this mess

as long as you are in a naija owned biz, you will be dancing around entitled family members chasing or demanding contracts

[color=royalblue]I really do not blame market unions that regulate their electricity source, and have strict rules on personal installations

It may not be targeted. A wrong Solar installation can cause fire.

Many markets have a policy that you must switch off your breakers when closing. Failure to do this is a serious fine

But then, some people install their own solar, and it can be the cause of the problem too.

Woohh! May those affected take heart and have the courage to overcome their losses.[/color]

there is a SERIOUS dearth of competent electricians. and since undersized cable will work, same colour cable will work, low quality breaker will work - unless the person actually supervising understands and ENFORCES WHAT IS REQUIRED - this is the end result

you must have also followed up on grenfell
Not at all

9/11 has a lot more plots to the story such as planes, news coverage, 110 floors to escape

Grenfell doesn't make for great story, highest a survivor will say they jumped from 3rd floor

Apparently people died in the incident. People are already calling UBA out for the terse and ambiguous statement they released.

U can see how dishonest they are with their press statement claiming they ensured safety of all the workers. Smh

They know people will drag them, especially relatives of the victims; that is why they blocked comments on their social media pages.

they have legal liability

and they cant pull a TB joshua in this case

right now they are likely looking for the scapegoat who will go to prison for negligence

if they can pin this on a lowly employee naija sty;e they will do so

but in reality this goes all the way to elumelu or at least the facility mgt ceo

the culture you create as oga is what leads to issues like this

penny pinching and dismissing safety issues as unnecessary overhead

I've always known the guy behind that cloak of philanthropy and aspire to perspire mentorship image Tony Elumelu puts up.

There was a time one ex-banker on LinkedIn took it upon himself to run a crusade against Nigerian banks using graduates as contract staff with poor terms of service for years. The guy called most of the banks involved in the practice out and somehow UBA's name just keeps popping up as one of those banks. A lot of contract staff shared their experiences with the guy his inbox and he was posting their complaint while protecting their identity. A whole lot of the UBA contract staff had bitter tales to tell.

At some point the guy tagged Elumelu himself and he promised to look into it. I doubt if he did eventually because the other banks that either converted their contract staff or increased their salary the guy mentioned them, but I can't remember the guy mentioning UBA for doing likewise.

How will they pin it on an employee? The company/management should be made to take the fall because clearly they didn't take health and safety of their workers really serious from the shiit show of yesterday.

How can they not have emergency exit? What happened to fire extinguishers and hydrants? How did the fire get that serious without an alarm being raised at the initial stages for people to evacuate?

How do they want to pin all of that on a low level employee?

if you are not a multinational - that is how they do for naija

happened with a colleague when someone died in a tank [back in 06/07] . at that time we had no proper safety process or procedure. they all hung out the engineer to dry

our ceo put us under severe pressure to deliver a site . told our HOD he would sack him if we did not deliver. we were on site welding canopy and calibrating with petrol. we delivered

the ceo [raumdeuter that our guy] then founded his own place and carried on with the same mentality. i heard three people died on different projects and it was covered up. they were doing direct labour with engineers under serious pressure

there is still some liability for company ogas with the oil and gs industry because of DPR/NMDPRA. but within the real estate/facilities space? i dont think so

after all was said and done in the case of tb joshua - na the structural engineers wey go jail. nothing happened to the man himself

Sometimes we talk and act like we live in an utopia where the law is upheld and actions carry measured consequences.
The only time proper steps are taken is when the dons loose their money like what happened at First bank with the over 40billion theft....

When it comes to these kind of issues involving the lives or health of mid/low level staff nothing meaningful happens.
I mean it's this same Nigeria that the police connive with families to release muderers quietly, frame innocents and vanish into thin air.

I already acknowledged in my previous post that proper justice may not be done because of the Naija factor.

BlueRayDick:
There are people who would have serious health complications much long after this incident is forgotten due to the smoke they’ve inhaled before they were rescued .

Normally people like that should be able to sue the bank in the future but I doubt if such lawsuit will go anywhere if they file it in Nigeria . That’s Nigeria being Nigeria
Still on still , I'm saying there's no way the bank will be able to pin the incident on a low-level staff except maybe the staff was either responsible for starting the fire or was the one that failed put out the fire at the initial stage knowing that is his primary job. Every finger points to the negligence of the management from failure to provide emergency exit to failure to implement/enforce safety measures.

we had an incident on a project i was handling and someone actually fabricated a report claiming i had been warned. my hod thought my goose was cooked. the head of safety wrote me an email copying all the bosses putting me on the spot

i started laughing when i saw the email because they had opened and exposed themselves

i had an actual week old report they had signed off on before the incident - and i opened the file properties of the report they sent which showed it had been drafted that afternoon. the funny thing is the project was driven by people in the company who likely knew of the issues and wanted a scapegoat when it went to shit.

my hod responded but put most of the people out of copy so that the ehs guys would not be thoroughly disgraced

anyone who does not have their documentation in a row may be in for it

Its sad and unfortunate for the victim especially if they are not rich or influential but Elumelu like every rich business man will do everything to cover this up and save his business face
Submit to a panel of inquiry.
If you sue them, they know the judges that will use adjournment to frustrate you
Best case, UBA will give Scholarship to children of the deceased which they might stop paying after 5yrs when attention has died down
