Tony Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), has expressed sadness over the fire incident at Afriland Towers in Lagos, which claimed the lives of six employees.

Speaking on Wednesday, Elumelu said he was “shattered” by the tragedy, describing it as a reminder of the irreplaceable value of people who drive the company’s mission daily.

No words can capture the magnitude of this loss — not for their families who loved them, not for the friends who valued them, and not for those of us who worked beside them,” he said.

Elumelu noted that he learnt of the incident while on his way to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), but decided to cut short his trip and return to Lagos “as a mark of respect to our lost colleagues”.

Elumelu urged colleagues and staff to show solidarity by reaching out to those injured and receiving care, adding that the company would provide sustained support to the bereaved families.

In the coming days, we will convene colleagues in a memorial to honour the memories of the departed, as we provide support to their families,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to emergency responders, first aid workers, and members of the public who displayed “courage and compassion” during the crisis.

“May this never happen again in our Group. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” he said.

So sad bro,it is well, this is how a compassionate and responsible leader should act in times like this and not staying put in France or London holidaying while the people you lead are dying.

That's the principled thing to do.

Kudos to him.

This is medicine after death. The families of the victims should get a good lawyer and start preparing their lawsuit for criminal prosecution and civil suits regarding who to hold accountable for their avoidable deaths.A handsome compensation should be part of the lawsuits.

Such a high-rise and sophisticated building ought to have two or more exit or emergency routes. Those deaths and injuries are highly preventable but for our "anyhowness".

That's the quality of a leader, symapthy, not the one that would go on vacation from country to country globe trotting while his country is on fire.....
Even if he around he would never acknowledge, they had to force him to vsisit benue where 100s were killed.

There will be no need for that as they are all covered under Group Life Insurance Policy. Its their insurance company that will compensate them which I think its about X3 of their annual salary

Anything that affects Tony Elumelu affects those of us that know what he is doing across Africa.

May God continue to direct his affairs in the right direction.

May the souls of those we lost find rest.

God bless Tony Elumelu
God bless UBA family
And may such incident never occur again in Jesus name. Amen

That’s pittance ! What is times three of their annual salary?Try this in the US and UBA could go bankrupt.I just hope their respective families seek legal advice.

That is the trait of a leader, they should be sympathetic, not like our type of president, who would rather travel the world on vacation while his country is in flames.

Katsina, Zamfara, and Benue became killing fields, yet he didn't deem it fit to visit or do something to stem the evil tide. Like Tinubu, like Buhari!

This is strange...!

It's one thing for lives to be claimed in residential buildings while people are sleeping at night, but for a corporate office while people are at work?!! Come on!

You mean no alarm went off at the first combustion or smoke?!! No smoke detection?!! No alarm system?!! No exit strategies or exit areas?!! No fire extinguishers in all offices and floors?!!

Yeah. That life insurance policy of 3 times annual salary is really nothing considering the gruesome way they died. Adequate compensation is needed.
