FIRS Mourns Four Assistant Directors, Managers Killed In Afriland Towers Fire by ijustdey(op): 9:30pm On Sep 17, 2025
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been thrown into mourning after four of its senior officials were killed in the fire outbreak that ravaged Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday.

The victims, who were trapped on duty at the agency’s sixth and seventh-floor offices inside the high-rise building, have been identified as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager).

In a statement signed by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, the agency confirmed the deaths and described the tragedy as a devastating blow to its workforce.

“It is with a heavy heart that FIRS announces the tragic loss of four of its staff members during the fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday,” the statement read.

“Our Security and Safety officials quickly mobilised and contacted the fire service as soon as they were alerted. On getting to the scene, thick dark smoke was already billowing out of the building.”

Eyewitnesses said the fire spread quickly through the multi-storey building, trapping workers as thick smoke engulfed several floors before emergency responders arrived.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service disclosed that at least nine people were rescued, five resuscitated, while others managed to escape unhurt during the chaotic evacuation.

The FIRS, which operates its Medium Tax Audit Office and Onikan Emerging Tax Office from the affected floors, said it was working closely with emergency agencies to determine the exact cause of the inferno.

The management also pledged to support the bereaved families and review safety standards across all its offices nationwide.

“The Management and entire staff are in deep shock and sorrow. We are in touch with the families of our departed colleagues whose commitment and professionalism were never in doubt.

"We will provide every necessary support at this trying time and are reviewing safety measures across FIRS offices in both rented and owned buildings nationwide,” the statement added.

I still don't get, fire alarm no dey the building? No emergency exits for the building? Are the security officers at the building no get small training on how to tackle fire outbreak before the arrival of the fire service....

Our problem in Nigeria is that we don't investigate incident like this properly and hold the culprits responsible for their negligence.

R. I. P to them all.

Evacuation during fire outbreak in a high-rise building can present a huge challenge. You would need to get to the ground floor before you can make exit from the building. Elevator may have stopped working and the staircase might not be easily accessible. Also, the smoke of the fire is as deadly as the fire itself, some may have passed out before they make it to the exit.

Basic safety, never use elevators in an emergency. Always the stairs!

Never knew there were fatalities.
RIP to the dead.

Since some big men are involved, hopefully, the incident will not be swept under the carpet. Thorough investigations must be carried out & some people punished for negligence or incompetence.

I dislike high-rise buildings with passion- no matter the beauty.
Re: FIRS Mourns Four Assistant Directors, Managers Killed In Afriland Towers Fire by Tohsynetita1(m):
All I see is carelessness of the management.
Honestly.
There’s nothing you can tell me.
Where did the fire come from?
No ordinary fire extinguishers?
No smoke alarm?
No steel ladder that they can ply from the top roof down?
None of them looking for escape could break the glass despite the building is so glass-claded

Something of such could go a long way in saving lives, but negligence, carelessness, and sometimes too religious might not want them design it.

In fact complete negligence for simple safety rules and regulations is our normal. The result is what you see as the case of that outbreak with loss of life and property.
Prayers and claims of being children of God and use of charms, amulets and other religious memorabilia is what we trust to save us in situation of danger.
This careless attitude is in our homes, roads, waterways and Airways!
We have to change...

Burning Lagos for Tinubu government to rebuild.
Very soon, miscreants will produce a video where MNK ordered those setting fire on Lagos.

How did others escape that the top Workers where not considered firsthuh

Pray the main reason for this outbreak is found , so that corrections will be taken next time.

Likely but he was alluding to using elevators to quickly get down from the high rise building. Its a temptation that fire drills should have knocked out of you.

Secondly, if properly designed, elevators usual go to the ground floor and stay there during fire alarms. At least those in my building does.

RIP to the dead and quick recovery to those injured

FOOLISHNESS IS WHAT KILLED THEM

THE FIRE WAS IN THE BASEMENT AND WHAT ENGULFED THE BUILDING WAS THICK PLUM OF TOXIC SMOKE

WATCHING THE VIDEOS OF THE FIRE I OBSERVED THAT THE WINDOWS OF THE BUILDING WERE NEITHER SMASHED TO CREATE VENTILATION

AND I ASK LIKE HOW CAN A BUILDING BE FILLED WITH SMOKE AND PEOPLE INSIDE WILL NOT HAVE THE SURVIVAL INSTINCTS TO SMASH ALL AVAILABLE WINDOWS TO CREATE VENTILATION AND CREATE A ROUTE FOR THE SMOKE TO ESCAPE?

IT'S REALLY BAFFLING AND I WON'T BE SURPRISED THAT EVEN IN THE FACE OF DEATH THEY WERE FORMING BIG MAN AND ORDERING THEIR SUBORDINATES AROUND

It's because the right facilities to provide safety for workers during fire incidents were not in place.. they probably had no fire extinguishers in the building talk more of marked fire exit routes..

Some deaths that kill Nigerians are due to carelessness, leaving everything to chance and holding hypocritical prayers.

A wet clothes would have saved their lives. Survival skills and first aid need to be properly taught

You are correct, I couldn't watch the video because it is just too disturbing seeing people jumping from the building.

This is where I blame the securities working at the tower.
