Odewaleadesoye:Ok oh, this is just not right and feasible. The Anglican Communion is trying to compete with the Pentecostal churches on expansion, forgetting the time we live in. Let us face it, among the existing Dioceses currently running, how many amongst them are self-sustaining, outside the mother Dioceses? Come to Rivers State, using Oyigbo LGA as a case study. We have up to four different Dioceses there, listed as follows: Evo Diocese, Ukwa Diocese, Etche Diocese, and a part of the Niger-Delta Diocese (Iriebe areas, with boundaries that include Umuebule IV). A surprising trend is that all these Dioceses are outcompeting themselves at Church Planting. Some churches are in rented homes / shops! My own Anglican Church, in a rented hall!!. Now what you will notice is that there are lots of fundraising, and fund appeals by these small churches to their members and then, these churches are being given unrealistic "Quota" amounts to be paid to their head Dioceses. The result is that you will see real Anglicans leaving the church for other Pentecostal Churches due to the incessant fundraising and fund appeals in the church. It is a pity that the Anglican Church I grew up in has now changed drastically. Quantity has been prioritised over quality, and it is so sad. In my town, with 12 villages in Anambra state, it is just 4 years ago that another Anglican church was planted in my town making it just 2 Anglican churches in a town of almost 200,000 inhabitants, (before this, we just have 1 Anglican church), which has a functioning and running School, which is cool, but where I currently live, We have the presence of 4 Dioceses with more than 10 different Anglican churches across 4 Dioceses, and population is less than my town of origin. Now what do we see? Reverends whose salaries are not paid on time and poorly renumerated, uninhabitable buildings for churches and scanty membership across all the churches. Growing up, Churches were grand edifices with stained colored window glasses, huge expanse of land with an attached space for cemetery. I guess it is the time we find ourselves now, I might just be old school, but the more Dioceses been created especially in areas already saturated will not help the growth of the Anglican church, many of these churches cannot sustain theirselves, (Recall my village church has a full fledge school from Nursery to Secondary school with full population) many members are leaving the church to churches where they are not been tasked always to raise funds for the church. I wish the Primate Head of the Anglican Communion will look into this. |

Beremx:In Anambra and imo, Anglican is almost at par with the catholic church. In Enugu, the Anglican church is a minority. The Anglican church has a heavy presence. Watch out for Dunukofia diocese to be carved out from Awka. |

ebuka1511:Thanks my bro for dis wonderful observation.....i was surprised when i got to my village to see that the wonderful church built by the white missionaries have been demolished and another was being constructed....i'm not even against rebilding but nothing was wrong with the former structure....even the whites who built it are still using their 1000 yrs old buildings ....also the population has not increased its not like, there are people sitting outside during the service.....and u also raised a very important point that people are now leaving the church especially youths... |

fergie001:You know much about Anglican Church, kudos to you By selecting bishop, can a venerable( Archdeacon) be promoted to Bishop? or is it only the Revd Cannons that can be made a Bishop? |
| Re: Nigeria Anglican Church Creates 15 New Dioceses, Elects New Bishops (FULL LIST) by fergie001: 11:48am On Sep 19, 2025 |
owunabastard:The Church has three orders: Deacons, Priests and Bishops (Every Priest from the Primate down falls within these three). Archdeacon to Bishop is the normal hierarchical route, however, the Bishopric upwards is an elective position. Priests are ordained, Canons are preferred, Archdeacons are collated, Bishops are elected and later consecrated. In the Diocese of Lagos West, Nigeria's richest and most competitive Anglican Diocese....every available vacancy for Bishopric will most likely see a Venerable from there get a slot, but not in the mother Lagos Diocese (for some reasons I won't explain here) ![]() A Revd Canon is still far off to becoming a Bishop... He has to go through been a Venerable or Archdeacon before becoming a Bishop. The process from Revd Canon to Venerable takes between. 4-10 years depending on the Diocese. You can be a Venerable but not an Archdeacon but you can't be an Archdeacon without been a Venerable. Infact, in some cases, persons go to the Venerable rank without even the Canon position, it depends on the Bishop, the Priest in particular, the number of years he has put in and his role in the church, again, how (un)competitive the Diocese is. It is in very rare terms you see a Revd Canon becoming a Bishop direct...it is usually in a Missionary Diocese (this is my second time seeing such) .... Some conditions are in place, it's either the Canon is from that axis or very close to that place where it is easy to spread the gospel and also acquire infrastructure - financial and equipment, for the young Diocese. IT IS EXTREMELY CHALLENGING TO BECOME A BISHOP OF A MISSIONARY DIOCESE OR BISHOP OF A NEW DIOCESE..... It is hardddddddd workkkkkkkk! Again, the dynamic of that new Missionary Diocese is also a factor. |

Thank you for this observation. It was in Makurdi in the early 2001 at a meeting, alongside the National AYF body with Bishop of Makurdi, N N Inyom that I first heard the mooted idea of 10 more Provinces, I wasn't comfortable. What is wrong with our three? It's now 14 with 176 Dioceses..... 176, looking like we want to create a job for everybody. Before you know it every zone started competing for Bishops so there will be enough voting rights for the Primacy and all that. How many of these Dioceses can be self-sustaining? Putting enormous pressure on the Priests. I remember my roommate then, a Canon at a Diocese in Osun (won't mention it) that was always in fisticuffs with his Bishop because of ....... I will rather we have Missionary Dioceses under Mother Dioceses that will take care of the spread if need be. At this rate we are going, every LGA will soon have a Diocese. |

| Re: Nigeria Anglican Church Creates 15 New Dioceses, Elects New Bishops (FULL LIST) by Fianze93(m): 4:38pm On Sep 19, 2025 |
fergie001:By the church standing rule, anyone who have been a priest for six years can be elected bishop. So it doesn't matter if you're canon or venerable. |
| Re: Nigeria Anglican Church Creates 15 New Dioceses, Elects New Bishops (FULL LIST) by Svoboda(m): 4:39pm On Sep 19, 2025 |
fergie001:Getting promoted from a canon to a bishop first happened before my very eyes in 1989, when P.J. Akinola was elected first bishop of Abuja diocese. From there as eventual primate, late Simon Bala was elected bishop of gusau as a rev can in 1999 or so. Rev Can Johnson Onuoha was elected bishop of arochujwu ohafia diocese in 2005. In the north, it's very common to see quick promotions of this nature. You'd as well witness revs and rev cans acting as supervisory priests of archdeaconries. |

fergie001:The church rules says anyone who has been priest for 6 years can be elected bishop. So there is nothing like saying a Revd Canon is still far from becoming a Bishop. |
