That is because many people are escaping the tax net. So they need to capture more

In some US states you pay 50% of your income as tax before you even spend a kobo. You earn 1m, you pay 500k. In some European countries its even worse some as high as 60%

As for multiple taxes Yes, you pay on your income, the money left when buying goods you pay, when you use the money to buy property you pay property taxes, when you use the money to buy stocks or real estate and it gains, when you sell you pay capital gains

I'm not talking about liking or not liking the president.

I'm saying in Nigeria of today when u ask pertinent questions about governance , the president and other political office holders all you will get is insult. Buhari wasted tax payers money taking treatment over and over again in the UK; when people ask questions Femi Adesina will be responding with insult.

Bayo Onanuga is doing the same thing today. In Nigeria our leaders make it seem like they are doing us a favor occupying that seat and not that they are meant to serve the people. Then u will see them treating some demograhics of the whole population like they are one and same with us. They act like the president is only expected to serve himself and those that finds favour of his government.

All of these things will naturally not want to make people pay tax if they can dodge it.

As for me, I already pay tax so I don't have a choice and that's why I will continue to drag any political office holder I see messing up. That's why I don't listen to any baggar that tries to gaslight me when I'm expressing my displeasure about governance because I know the kind money dem dey take out of my gross income to finance lifestyle of public office holders.

Unfortunately you as a salary earner you are exposed. The other way is for you to have a business on the side and run all your expenses through the business

I know about this, but I have a feeling going forward they may make the process of registering a new business very tedious to discourage people from using this method to avoid tax

and people before now did transactions with personal accounts to dodge VAT.

it seems there is now some sort of VAT platform so it is automatically recorded for you

you have to file taxes for your business as well. and you will likely have to pay an accountant to do this, you will also ave to do CAC registration periodically. so you are incurring extra costs. and if you are not careful and you start allowing your friends to use your account to recevie cash - your inflows will stack up fast. all i am saying is the free ride is coming to an end

It's not that deep. It is doable for anybody that wants to do it.

people have been using business account for all sorts. eg your friend is being dashed kickback and he does not want the contractor to pay to his personal account. or he is being paid for a service and he doesn't have a business account. or his biz account is frozen

By the time the year ends and they do profit sharing, staff will collect very little PS because oga don chop some of the potential profit in form of expenses that only benefit him and his household.

Big companies do it, the MD , board of directors and senior management will help themselves to the company's revenue and leave very little to be considered as Profit which government will first tax before the remaining can be shared or retained in the business.
