The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Plateau State has discovered a five-hectare cannabis farm in Magama District, Langtang South Local Government Area, and arrested two suspects. The farm was destroyed on the spot. According to NDLEA State Commander CN Anthony Gotar, this recent bust follows a similar discovery in Mangu last month, indicating a growing trend of cannabis cultivation in Plateau State. The commander urged the public and transport companies to cooperate with NDLEA operatives during searches and remain vigilant about security ¹ ².

In similar operations, the NDLEA has been active in combating drug-related crimes across Nigeria. For instance, in Cross River State, a 30-hectare cannabis farm was destroyed, and 191 individuals were arrested for drug-related offenses between January and June 2025. The agency also seized significant quantities of illicit substances, including cannabis, methamphetamine, and opioids. In Edo State, the NDLEA destroyed two cannabis farms spanning 0.78 hectares and arrested 39 suspected drug traffickers. These efforts highlight the agency's commitment to eradicating drug cultivation and trafficking nationwide ¹ ³.

I find it very difficult to believe that in the 21st century there is a government agency on cannabis. Other countries are harnessing the benefits of cannabis why the black man is demonizing it

It really is heartbreaking to contemplate those billions of dollars in revenue that Nigeria could accrue simply by legalizing and TAXING cannabis cultivation for medical export, just as is now done in Lesotho, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and now, Ghana, attracting vast sums in international investment literally overnight.

It’s unfortunate really, because this is lack of creativity and foresight, and It’s glaring as a nation. Apparently, it’s going to take a while for Nigeria to catch up in innovation and utility of resources. Instead of our own scientists to do their research, they blindly copy and follow the theory of other scientists in caucasian nations.

Well, it is going to be a tough one to start medical cannabis. Na big man's game....and Most of these guys doing it presently aren't big to that stage. And I believe they won't want to do the CBD aspect. Because the guidelines are too strict, pharmaceutical behemoths and extremely wealthy individuals can pull it off. N200m maynot be able to fully set up some acre with all the securities and proper monitoring needed. I don't even N500m can.

Anyway, it is well.

Let’s legalize this, put stringent measures on how to cultivate and consume it and make money off it.the number of security men that consumes it is equal to those who illegally takes it.why are we living in denial.

You've made a sobering point, namely that it might turn out to be that only corporations and individuals with deep pockets that would benefit from a newly legalized cannabis industry in Nigeria.

Ironically, the scenario you describe is why even in California where cannabis is legal, enormous infrastructural costs must be paid in advance by anyone seeking to cultivate cannabis for profit, while those who do come up with the cash to start such cultivation, are taxed so heavily as to make the venture a losing endeavor or a break-even business at best. For these reasons, illegal weed farms did not go away in California, even when cannabis was legalized for both medicinal and recreational end-use.

One can only hope that Nigeria does not follow the California model if and when the enormous financial promise of legal cannabis is recognized by the federal government.

It's not a racial issue but a Nigerian one. You can't really expect much from the government of the day though 😕

Nigeria should be making good money from it's export, instead of this waste.

Plateau State does not sound like a particular southern region. Name checkers will be disappointed. My point is, crime is a crime no matter where. Let's stop the stigmatization and collectively fight it

Even though I am against the smoke of cannabis, I think it other uses can be harnessed. It has pharmaceutical benefits and all these decades long burning never stopped people from planting it.

Five years ago in 2020, when a Nigerian legislator tried her best to get cannabis laws repealed, I started a thread on this very subject, in the hopes that Nigeria would soon join the league of enlightened nations who are reaping billions of dollars from cannabis cultivation.

https://www.nairaland.com/5791388/legal-cannabis-nigeria-create-many

One can only hope that if commercial production of cannabis is not made legal in Nigeria, laws should be amended so it would at least be legally permissible for people to grow their own cannabis for personal consumption but NOT for sale. This way the same penalties can be retained for selling cannabis while the entire adult population would be granted the freedom to plant their personal supply and therefore avoid buying cannabis that has been poisoned with chemicals, or even non-cannabis vegetative matter sprayed with highly addictive and health destroying synthetic TCH.

When the lawmen showed up to destroy the crop, it was not yet ripe because there are no flowers visible yet. While the cannabis leaves do contain the active ingredient THC, it is the flowers that contain the highest concentrations of THC and in some strains, of CBD, that beneficial, non-psychoactive component of the plant.

A continent that dont do researches what do you expect? Africa is still too backward to have medical use for it. They believe cannabis is the forbidden fruit in the Bible. Always waiting for the white to do or start something first.
