Jf they are tired of teaching, they should look for jobs in local government secretariats. I hate those entitled professors who don't do nothing but expect everything. I remember one of my lecturers who used Google to teach us and he would just be reading straight from his phone, no editing nothing. It's only in Nigeria that people won't work but will be comparing themselves with people in other countries who actually work. 500k is okay for them, if they don't want it, they should resign and travel to UK where they will work in bread factories. Mtchew
that Google thing you said is shameful. That's not scholarship na

How much do Lecturers earn in USA?

Anything teaching in Nigeria is sadding.

Some Private School still pays their Graduate Teachers very poorly.

I still heard last month where someone was telling me their school in Lagos pays their Graduate Teachers 30K per monthcry

How will such a School Owner make heaven?

Prof Adejumo is not serious. He teaches in a public university while all his children attend private university
I disagree with you, he's quite wise to put his children in the private schools, will you place your wards in a system that is decaying and more or less abandoned by government?

When I wrote here that a professor in Nigeria cannot afford flight ticket with his salary but a factory worker in the U.S can go on full holiday trip to another country with his salary, some people who are supporting the evil in Aso rock where saying otherwise to justify what the evil has turned Nigeria to.

Just imagine the lowest workers abroad earning more than our professors here in Nigeria and yet they are telling Nigerians that they need to pay tax and price of goods and services like those abroad, also telling us that the evil they support is the best thing to happen to Nigeria
And is it the evil at also rock that made the Nigerian professor unable to afford flight ticket with his salary but a factory worker in the U.S can go on full holiday trip to another country with his salaryhuh
Like he was able to afford it beforehuh

If he was that good, why were the universities still a mess under his rule.

The day you realize that the good leaders and the bad leaders were not really different, that's the time you will know Nigeria's problem is that all our leaders keep our economy resource dependent.

That's why GEJ and tinubu are bad leaders. No mantter what they did, at the end, oil was still providing most of the monies for our revenue. Same thing for most of our leaders since Gowon. And before Gowon, most of our revenue came from selling raw materials...not using them to make stuff the world needs.

I mean, Shagari had high oil prices...until they crashed and revealled the economy was really like the emperor with no clothes. Same with GEJ...oil crashed in April 2014, and by December 2014, we was borrowing to pay salaries.

You may think I am defending tinubu, but I am not. Our problem always has been dutch disease. When the price of whatever resource we sell is high, we live like kings. But the basis is a flawed basis...and when prices crash, we have our nyash exposed.

And if we don't solve this problem, we would be in serious trobule in the next decades. But all of you guys fight over oil money 24/7. Tinubu continues to borrow to maintain the facade, and he also keeps spending on palliatives and free money. Nothing for diversificaton and industries, and taking hard decisions.
He was better than Tinubu. I mean better than a mile distance. The universities were not where they should be then but were by far better than these. Things are worse now, that's the reality. Jonathan is times ten better than this.

Ok, firstly I see you are not in Nigeria, secondly how do you want the solution you are offering to be implemented using the situation that Nigeria is currently in?
Thank you brother. Though not in Nigeria, I have family in Nigeria and constantly coming home. And my prayers for Nigeria to be great again.

Nigeria needs to be regionally divided, with each region having full control of their resources while we have weak central government.

Appointments to regional Assembly of law makers must be on part-time basis. Everyone must have his full time job, so every elected regional law makers should be paid allowance per sitting..ASUU in conjunction with each regional labour Congress should lead this fight to make politics less attractive, they shouldn't demand increased wages in the course of this fight so everyone will join them in the struggle.

To fight corruption, we need a strong and sound institutions. Our institutions are quite weak and enabled corruption.

While I was on my PhD outside Nigeria, my bursary was delayed due some mistakes on my own part. I approached my Prof to borrow me 100 Euro, his response shocked me. His response was where do I get that kind of money? This is a German Prof with many many years as Prof. What he did was to call a departmental meeting because of me and told his colleagues about my predicament.
They all began to contribute to me and at the end of the day, I even got slightly above 100 Euros.
My point they're not rich but they're happy, the working conditions are awesome, they can come to school with bicycles and they will be smiling because the environment is fine. They're not thinking about health needs, standard health care are available for all, they are not afraid of leaving school anytime because of sound security.

I don't know how we got here as a country jaree. It's terrible.

Like you didn't read what i said

His kids being in private university is the result of neglect of public university

Plus most lecturers kids don't attend the same university their parents teach in, and their parents still do a good job regardless

MODIFED

For example, let us say we have a lecturer who teaches at FUTO Owerri, and his daughter wants to read pharmacy. As far as I know FUTO does not offer pharmacy. So, she has to go to a different university.
If you say his kids in private schools was a results of negligence of public university, does that also stop lecturers from making personal research that will add meaningful impact in the system? Does it stop them from evolving, rather than teaching obsolete 19th century western myth/curriculum? Besides, is it all his children that are not doing any course offered by the university he works in?

It is a simple logic that you are cunningly trying to defend. You can't impact good knowledge in your students and say your children should not be part of it . This is the kind of shame we stupidly accept as a way of life in Nigeria.

I have noticed recently this craze for obtaining PHDs by our young people. while I feel it is good; personally, I prioritize making money over paper certifications

An average Igbo man makes millions weekly even without tertiary education, so of what use is being a PHD holder and yet can't earn a living wage?

if that certification is good as they paint it, why can't they be able to make money legitimately from it? No one gets rich from just earning salaries, even if there are, most of the highest paid salary earners in Nigeria don't even have PHDs.

Ekiti state has the highest number of professors in Nigeria, yet it is one of the poorest and less developed state in Nigeria.

Think about it!

Very sad situation.

It is in years to come that we will understand what we are doing to ourselves when there will be few people willing to go the route of becoming academics.

When the dearth of academics and teachers hit us, may be then we will start importing teachers and professors and relying on expatriates.

Since after my first degree in law, I never really had any motivation to go further.

Owo ni Koko!
Bro, that future is here already. It's just that in typical Nigerian fashion, we will live on as if nothing happened. A retired consultant and former VC once mentioned in class that there was a time UCH Ibadan was second best in the whole of the commonwealth.
I doubt Nigeria will ever hire expatriates as teachers, no matter how bad it gets. We don't value certain things that much.

I quite agree with you that salaries generally need serious review. It is quite depressing for someone who has spent more than 20 years on the job to still not be able to earn 1m as monthly salary. Funny enough, if workers were well paid, corruption would reduce naturally and productivity will increase. There are some private universities, however, that pay decent salaries (AUN for example). I think the government, mostly, doesn't value the efforts of civil and public servants.
Honestly, they seem not to know that increased salaries would translate to increased productivity and also reduce corruption!
