Excel College responds to viral video of students drinking, smoking

Excel College, Ejigbo, has issued a response to a viral video showing former students drinking wine and smoking inside its hostel.

Following the video’s circulation in September, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministries of Education and Youth & Social Development, along with the Lagos State Police Command, launched an investigation into the matter.

In a statement signed by the director, Dr. Dele Oke, and released on Saturday, the school noted, “While we confirm that these incidents happened in the school hostel, the facts are stated below.”

The institution explained that the first video was recorded on May 11, when a parent visited with non-alcoholic wine and snacks to celebrate her son’s final birthday in secondary school.

“A parent, who arrived about 7pm, pleaded to be granted access to her son as it was his last birthday to be celebrated in Secondary School. The parent brought non-alcoholic wine and snacks, and her phone was used to make a recording of her son and his friends popping and drinking the wine,” the statement read.

That video was later circulated in a class WhatsApp group.

The second clip, the school said, took place in April 2025 during Holiday Extension Classes for graduating SS3 students, when some were caught experimenting with smoking in a game called “pass and puff.”

The college added, “While phones are banned in the school, SS3 students in the hostel were permitted to intermittently have access to their phones to check updates about their UTME centres.”

A concerned parent who came across the video reported it in June, prompting the school to act. Both students and Housemasters were questioned, leading to disciplinary action.

“Upon conclusion of this internal investigation, which ascertained that indeed the incident occurred in the hostel premises, the Housemasters were issued stringent warning letters for dereliction of duty and forfeiture of their termly allowance,” the statement said.

The students involved were expelled from the hostel and excluded from the 2025 graduation ceremony. However, they were later allowed to sit for the NECO exams after expressing remorse and with parental undertakings.

The school stressed that preventive measures have since been put in place, including relocating the SS3 reading room and increasing staff oversight.

“Ahead of resumption for the 2025/2026 session, the Management of Excel College made some structural changes within the hostels, such as relocating the SS3 reading room to a more accessible and open area within the hostel.

“Management also held several meetings with teachers, counsellors, and particularly the Housemasters and mistresses to increase the frequency of walk rounds, increase surveillance against bullying and peer pressure, ensure strict adherence to visiting hours, and improve access to counselling sessions,” the statement said.

On the ongoing investigation, the school assured that it is cooperating with the authorities.

“All documentary evidence, including the expulsion and warning letters issued to the students, has been submitted to the authorities.

The parents of the implicated ex-students, some of the ex-students themselves, and representatives of the PTA Executives of Excel College have also been available to provide clarity and further information as required to ensure full transparency,” it added.

Dr. Oke concluded, “We acknowledge the concerns of Nigerians in this matter and remain resolute in our commitment to maintain excellence with integrity, both in words and actions.”

It's a private school, na your money 🤷🏿. It's allowed. It's missionary school I know can be strict 🤷🏿

Very detailed response here. It is good disciplinary messures were taken then and there is evidence to that effect that can be made available to the state government team. I hope with the measures put in place, it doesn't happen ever again.

The school responded reasonably with enough evidence to go around and I hope the Lagos state government will handle this matter with clarity

As an educator I must say grooming these young ones isn't easy.

From cautioning them to stay clear of alcohol.

To, preventing bullying and more.

To students asking you in class that they are in the mood for intimacy

Educators blessings is not in their salary which is next to nothing but in heaven.

Not too young to waste away ,this one's started on time oooo....they're not even afraid of going mad the way they smoke weed...their parents send them to excel school to excel but the reverse is probably going to be the case.....

8/10 of senior public secondary school students, who are male are yahoo boys.

6/10 of same students taking drugs.

9/10 of female senior secondary school students are non virgin.

It's kids that are dictating to parents now and not verse versa.

Secondary school students can be a handful really especially the ones in SS3.
All these small boys trying to do adult stuff . They are driven by their raging hormones at this stage of their lives.
They need to be properly monitored and dealt with appropriately because these ones are one step away from being cultists or at the fore front of other destructive vices .
With advent of internet, it would really be a lot more difficult raising kids .

PS: It was bad during my time over 15 years ago too. Some of my mates smoked and sneaked out to brothels . Crazy stuff

Doubt he did, or probably lacks the understanding of what he read.
I was also a boarder back in the days, and parents do come to celebrate with their wards in sch, the only issue I have with this case is the timing.
7pm is too late, the parent should have come earlier.
On the puff and pass case, I think the school has done well in the handling

Some parents sent their damaged kids to schools so they can rest from the trauma they give them at home.

Hmmm this needs to stop! Parents! Parents! parents!

I also attended a Catholic owned boarding house for four years.

You'll be bullied like tomorrow no dey!

You'll suffer in silence like make you die!

Some will learn smoking, sex styles plus how to practice it on girls live, social nights involving good debates and competition in maths, etc. I was a maths champ then.

And may be forced to give hand jobs and even anal.....

Parents need to open their eyes well and be available for their kids!

Many don't care about their health again, people consume whatever they want not minding the repercussion.

By the time it leads to sicknesses like kidney failure or cancer of the lungs, they will come online and post picture with account details seeking millions of naira for surgery.

Of course, they admitted it because it's simply not possible to deny it. The video clearly showed the faces of the students involved.

Okay the Management did try and made an effort to check mate the immoral and or course very shameful act of the students. However more should be done. I will advice that closed circuit tv cameras should should be installed everywhere and more stricter action with letters of commitment by parents and students signed. This is a sign of this generation's values.
