LASG Sympathizes With Lagosians Over Tuesday's Flood by naptu2(op): 9:39am On Sep 25, 2025
The Kusenla Junction (aka Chisco) on the Lekki - Epe Expressway was heavily flooded on Tuesday and this caused a massive traffic jam that stretched all the way back into Victoria Island. Many streets within Lekki and Victoria Island were blocked with traffic.

The flood came from a rainstorm that began in the morning after people had left home for work or school. The rain continued till evening time.

The situation was made worse by the fact that a container truck had fallen at that same junction early that morning and it had not been removed by the time the rain started.

The road was free after Chisco, but everywhere from Chisco to Victoria Island was completely blocked.

Tokunbo Wahab is the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment.

Tokunbo Wahab @tokunbo_wahab

Dear Lagosians,

We sincerely sympathize with all residents who were affected by the flash floods witnessed in parts of the State yesterday. We understand the discomfort and disruption it caused and we deeply empathize with those who were affected.

As a coastal city, Lagos is naturally vulnerable to flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall combined with tidal lock. Despite this, the State Government has continued to invest in drainage infrastructure, regular desilting, and enforcement of environmental laws to minimize flooding incidents and protect lives and property.

We must also provide clarity on some of the affected areas. At Kusenla, the challenge is technical: the downstream is about 1.2 meters higher than the invert of the existing drainage, as confirmed by the survey conducted for the ongoing project awarded by the State government at the end of Kusenla road which includes a pumping station. Around House on the Rock church, the flooding was linked to infractions we highlighted earlier; illegal construction on flood plains and dumping of refuse in drains. These kinds of activities worsen flooding and must stop.

We appeal for understanding and continued cooperation from the public. Keeping our environment clean, refraining from dumping refuse into drains, and avoiding construction on floodplains are vital to achieving a flood-free Lagos. In several of the videos shared yesterday, clear infractions were observed, and @followlasg will ensure that such illegal structures and obstructions are promptly removed. Including those illegal reclamations carried out without the requisite Environmental Impact Assessment Report and the Drainage Clearance.

We also wish to assure residents that the flooding was a flash flood in some parts of the State and has since receded this morning. The Ministry remains committed to strengthening our flood management systems, but this effort requires the support and responsible actions of all Lagosians.

Together, we can build a safer, cleaner, and more resilient Lagos.

Bayo @tesh_ola

Serious traffic & flood at Chisco were the culprits. Also, a truck had fallen & blocked the lane for those turning back to Lekki and those going towards House on the Rock.

So, the Chisco intersection was ground zero, Chisco towards Lekki was free, & also Chisco towards Jakande.

Vi is currently experiencing a pronounced level of vehicular congestion, precipitated by a substantial backlog of traffic emanating from the Chisco axis.

This has culminated in a traffic gridlock within our designated axis, encompassing key locations such as Akin Adeshola, Law School, Ozumba Way, Adeola Odeku, Adetokunbo Ademola, Ahmadu Bello Way, and extending to Eko Hotel through Oniru, with the stretch leading to Marwa Road inward being particularly congested at this time.

Our officers are actively on ground to manage the situation and mitigate any potential disruptions.

Only powerful pumps and dykes can save Lekki from perennial flooding , the place is tethering at sea level, too much rains make the Lagoon rise above the peninsula and leads to water charge back , only powerful pumps that come on automatically once rainfall reaches a particular volume can work and a dyke system that prevents water charge back ...Total cost of such a project 8- 12 billion dollars , can Lagos afford it ?

When there is heavy floods shouldn't there be traffic and safety advisory to stay Indoors or avoid certain flooded areas until otherwise communicated, undecided

They want to start demolishing buildings in the name of shoeing they are working to fixing the flood issues but that is not the solution, The problem is much bigger than that.

Study the problem carefully first b4 rushing to demolish valuable houses.

@OP.

It was terrible and it is right Lagos Government issue a statement on it. I was stuck in it coming from Malnland at 11.00am , enroute to a meeting at VGC, to arrive at 7.00pm. It was a horrible experience.

Lagos State Government must learn from this development and move to ensure the problem gains permanent solution.

Flood that is capable of crippling the main road, i.e Lekki Expressway, that runs across the lenght of the lekki end of Lagos Island, beyond Awoyaya and onwards to Epe, is simply unacceptable.

Commendable Lagos state Government acknowledged the problem, cited the challenges and have assured they will do the needful.

Hopefully, Lagosians will no experience this again.

We are not problem solver in this part of the country .
What we do is to talk

What they need is a large automatic pumping machine that can sock large quantity of water to his destination within some minute
Technology must be used to support the drainage system

Come to Mushin, Agege motor road, drainage was cleared, packed on the road side for more than two weeks and rain washed it back.

The cycle continues every 3 months.

This happens almost everywhere in Lagos.

You are correct. Good they sympathise but that is not all that responsive and solution-driven Government do.

They should work to deliver solutions so that, in an age climate change is wreaking havoc everywhere globally, flash floods does not cripple Lagos Island and even pose a threat to the lives of Lagosians.

To their credit, and shown in the report, they identify the problem and have given assurance efforts will be made to prevent a repeat of this in future. To that end I dont think you comment of "lazy Government everywhere" is fair in regard to Lagos Goveenment and her leaders.

Lagos is even trying by spending money to look for a solution.

Some other states that are also plagued by flooding after rains do not even bother to spend up to 10% of what Lagos is spending in search for a solution!

Make some go back to their villages!

And let everyone inculcate good and hygienic habits especially not to dump refuse indiscriminately!
