addexx:FIRS mandate is collection not spending, we should hold ministry of finance and department of budgeting accountable for expenditures |

saintopus:Why not simply speak for yourself?? There are numerous Nigerians who indeed feel taxes are a punishment. |

Wahabfuture:Like I said earlier, I appreciate posters who talk as you do because your worry is legitimate since Nigeria is a very corrupt nation and concerned citizens have the right to be worried. Yet, my consistent argument is that we don't have a culture of paying taxes anyway meaning those making noise online about "they will loot out taxes" are just empty noisemakers "bandwagoning" deceitfully anyway. Millions of Nigerians operate on the informal sector where they will never pu tax from the day they begin operating to the day they leave the Earth It workers , under PAYE scheme, who cannot avoid tax payment along with companies and industrialists like Dangote, Adenuga etal. Let's stop fooling ourselves. Tax collection from average Nigerian has never been a part of our nation's in recent memory. Let us begin efficient tax collection it and see the effect before enemies of progress who have never paid and will never pay tax start making noise to fulfil an agenda of bashing everything good the Government does. |

I always want to see APC supporters in this kind of thread. Maybe they will compare Nigeria with China or Kenya that they are paying taxes more than us. But how will a reasonable person open his or eyes to support this kind government. This one is call operation no Mercy |

Solababa91:Another gracious post. Valid point. My take is that is that establishing a culture of efficient tax collection is needed to begin with. We cannot look at potential for corruption along to dismiss the need for a nation to collect taxes because many nations of the world, previously very corrupt, became better through the synergy of effort between followers and leaders to evolve more transparent and efficient system for usage of collected taxes. If you even do a Google search, with Nigeria as specific parameter, you will see many hits you were previously unaware of illustrating how Nigerians can monitor government spending and utilisation of taxes. We must start somewhere because it is horrendous very few pay tax in Nigeria. |

No they are palliatives! The man at the helm is a tax collector, so do we now call him a palliative collector! |

Let govt spending be public, reduce public aides, make public facilities attractive for citizens, let all govt houses have a space accessible for citizens, not the one you encamped it as though it's a prison yard, etc Embracing tax won't be a tug of war |

Personally,i don't see Nigerian tax system as punishment but wickedness. The country offers virtually nothing to the citizens but taxes them: In Nigeria you pay your children school fees, take care of your aged parents(indirect tax) fuel subsidy the only thing the citizens hitherto benefit from the state is now also taken. In fact, taxation in Nigeria is legitimized fraud |

BlackViper:Of course taxation is good in a normal country where it's been put to use for the benefit of the masses but it's a bad thing in Nigeria because the useless leaders keep embezzling it without accountability. |

SmartyPants:Why they see it as punishment is because they believe paying tax is giving someone money without proper accounting. They believe someone will loot the money |

| Re: Don’t See Taxes As Punishment, FIRS Boss Tells Nigerians by SmartyPants(m): 3:54pm On Sep 25, 2025 |
saintopus:No, it's not just that. The average Nigerian is not community-minded. The thought process is that we have oil, so why should I pay tax? The average Nigerian would rather use their own money to build a nice house and buy a nice car even if the road to that house is completely dilapidated. You will go to certain communities and observe nice houses all around, but terrible roads. Something a few people in that neighborhood could put their hands together and fix. |

Tinubu reform is only to tax and take food off the table of the citizens. Which of our institutions which is all wacko have been reformed for effective service? Taxing to share as loot especially among the governor's also. |

nairalanda1:its a known Fact that No ccountry can tax itself to prosperity ... its preposterous for anyone to posit We dont have options other than Tax, Tax 1st Nigeria is blessed with crude, we have refuse to fully explore these very resources optimally ... united emirate is living like paradise on crude alone Nigeria is blessed with so many resources, which could serve as better sources of revenue, aide balance of trade and even creat more jobs The greatest source of revenue and boost to economy are natural resources not Tax Instead of Tinubu Fixating on Tax, why not ensure we optimize Crude production and make sure we refinery local ... Taking this step alone will help the economy better than whatever Tax has to offer No country Tax itself to prosperity, Taxing in a low productivity economy wont take us anywhere, FDi stats is enough attestation |

Yes o o. It not a punishment when you impoverish people and them squeeze them of whatever is left in their hands. Tomorrow when the drug lord is close to departing the earth he will be seeking nonsense forgiveness from those he is destroying like his pharaoic predecessor did. It's only at the point of death that demon of wickedness seems to leave them. |
| Re: Don’t See Taxes As Punishment, FIRS Boss Tells Nigerians by nairalanda1(m): 4:08pm On Sep 25, 2025 |
chidiokay:You don't understand my point Tax is not a means to prosperity. It's a means to raising revenue so that the government does not borrow more than it has to. Especially since oil prices aren't favoring us. Prosperity comes from your country economy being based on manufacturing and export of manufactured goods and services. That is where apc is failing. Industrial economy |

Will pay for estate security Will pay for road rehabilitation Will pay for borehole Will pay for generator repairs Will pay for solar installations Will pay for security to secure your business premises And yet, FIRS will tell you not to see increased taxes as punishment……. God dey ooooo |

WizardOfNG:Don't you think it should be the other way round. Let government start being accountable with the very little they have and there will be less hubris about this tax matter. Recall that during the reign of Fashola in Lagos, there was a serious expansion of the tax net which affected a lot of people but there were very few serious complaints. |
| Re: Don’t See Taxes As Punishment, FIRS Boss Tells Nigerians by nairalanda1(m): 4:21pm On Sep 25, 2025 |
Wahabfuture:The issue is because most Nigerians do not pay tax and because oil revenue is not enough for all of us, that is why government cannot give you goodies Where you live, most people pay tax and there are penalties for not paying tax. This in turn incentives people to hold the government to account. Nigeria where most of us think we are as rich as Saudi because we have one tenth the oil they have, most don't pay tax. No incentive to hold government to account. So corruption flourishes. As does inefficiency. |

nairalanda1:its one of the means of raising Revenue Not the only way to generate Revenue as Tinubu is trying to confuse us Ok listen to yourself, in Tinubu case the more the Tax the More he borrows, or am i liein Fine, every govt needs revenue But there are other better ways to generate solid revenue that will reflect protein on the economy than Tax ... we have agriculture, we have so many resources govt can facilitate ... Better n juicer than Tax thats my point Countries that rely heavily on Tax go and check dem no get resources reach .. |
