Well before I go into details, a tale from my childhood

Back in the mid 1990's, when I was in SS1, one of our teachers, while teaching us, told us something funny. While cleaning out a room in her house, she discovered an old shopping list she had made in 1978....whereby....

1 loaf of bread...50 kobo
1 can of margarine...10 kobo

We roared with lafta...because we knew that that loaf of bread was now (1995)...80-100 naira, and that can of margarine was now...40 naira self.

I always hate these PDP vs APC Purchasing power comparisons. Because it does not show that PDP was better than APC, it shows an ongoing decline of the naira

For example...in 1983, me dad bought a new car at 12000 naira. In 2013, if he wanted to buy that same new car....it would have set him back at least N3 million to 7 million naira.

At the end of the day, what the above shows, is that there is a continous fall in the value of the naira. Bringing back PDP (note that I don't want APC Back in 2027 myself...at best if Obi can get enough support, good. Atiku, no thanks, he's just the same old, plus he is very old...literally.Even older than tinubu self)...or keeping APC is not going to change that.


We had the above discussions in the 1980's...when parents would tell us about the good old days of the 1970's when they ate chicken in university, and got a good meal for 50 kobo, and bought car for N400 (yes, for that amount, you could get a VW Beetle...probably the best car of the 20th century, still angry with VW for ending its production..in 1975). Even a table fan cost N16 by 1980. IN 1981, a cow cost N90.

Compare the above to PDP prices...and compare purchasing power of 1970's to PDP time....and are you going to tell me PDP failed...or there is something problematic here?

The problem is, resource dependency. When the price of the resource we sell goes up, we enjoy the good life. When the price of the resource we sell drops, we have issues. Back in the 1970's, cocoa was low, so while we were enjoying high oyel, Ghana was suffering from severe crisis...so many Ghanains ran to nigeria. When the oil price dropped in 1982...the following year we drove out the ghanaians. No more good times.



I always say that APC failed because in 2015, they could have worked out a plan to take us off oil dependency, and take us on the road to a strong economy and a strong naira. INSTEAD...they continued with the oil money. Both buhari and tinubu. Because changing the economy na hard work...very hard work. See how tinubu is borrowing. Even subsidy removal...he had no choice, and he even brought it back for some months, before removing it again. NO plan from this government to get us on the path to a economy dependent on industrial development...which is how eg China went from being a weak piece of a country to a country with a strong economy.

Instead of playing my mercedes is bigger than yours...(apologies to the late Nkem Nwankwo)...let us pause and learn from this thread that we need a leadership in 2027 that would get us off oil. At least start the process. We cannot rely on oil revenue that in real life can only do 1-5 million people, instead of the 240 million people we are. (and far too many people here pretend it can..lol). We got to actually fight corruption, and we got to fund our secrurity forces well enough.

Anyway, who am I talking to? No be Nigerians who want to chop money?

Here's the truth -

There was a circulating video, which was later fact-checked as edited and manipulated, claiming Tinubu promised to "reduce the purchasing power of the people, further slow down the economy and widen the tax net." The original, unedited video from 2019 shows him doing the opposite: appealing to the then Vice President not to increase VAT so as not to decrease purchasing power.

Facts 💯 one alhaji and I were talking just a little while ago and he was telling me that every single student used to get served a full chicken as lunch in university of ibadan.....I cant recall the year exactly......I swore that it is not possible in Nigeria..the man was just laffing @ me.

He said he never paid a single kobo for school fees that it was free and he was even paid a stipends alongside other students.

He's not someone that will lie but i believe him even though it's hard to believe.
