The Nigerian media community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a promising broadcast journalist with Arise News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, News360 Nigeria reports.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was 29 years old.

Born on December 26, 1995, she was celebrated for her eloquence, professionalism, and passion for storytelling as a news anchor, reporter, and producer.

A lawyer by training, she brought intellectual depth and strong analytical skills into her work.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, Arise News described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”

The channel expressed shock over her death, calling for a speedy investigation and justice for the culprits.

Her colleagues at Arise News have been left devastated, remembering her warmth, dedication, and infectious energy in the newsroom.

Tributes have also poured in from fellow journalists, viewers, and members of the legal community who admired her career.

The Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, which has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.

Maduagwu is survived by her parents, siblings, and extended family.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon as family, friends, and colleagues continue to grieve her sudden loss.
