ARISE News Channel has announced the tragic death of news anchor, reporter, and producer Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, 29, who was killed during an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.

Maduagwu, affectionately known as "Sommie" by colleagues and viewers, was 29 years old. The Nigerian Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

In a statement released by management representative Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, ARISE News described Maduagwu as "a cherished member of the ARISE News family" and "a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers."

Beyond her broadcasting career, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer who brought professionalism and dedication to her work. Colleagues remember her as a supportive team member and friend to many within the organisation.

"Sommie's voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory," the statement read.

The management and staff of ARISE News extended their deepest condolences to Maduagwu's parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

The news organisation called for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of those responsible for the attack, expressing shock at the sudden loss of their colleague.

Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995, and had become a familiar face to viewers of the television news channel before her untimely death.

So terrible. May her soul rest in peace, through the mercy of the Lord. Learnt it happened in Katampe area of Abuja. This is our reality in this country. The government is doing absolutely nothing to secure the state. It looks like citizens are just waiting to die. Who will help the people?

My heart sank at the news of her death. We need to secure Nigerians first.

Just pray that what is happening in Nigeria never happens to you. We are not safe in this country, and our government is only focused on the 2027 election.

Even in Abuja, Nigeria ‘s capital now capital of untimely death,kidnapping,banditry,ritual killings,if at all you were lucky to travel abroad with law degree.The leaders don’t care about the commoners.

I swear to God, this girls demise was a calculated political message, just like the blood sucking demon used that church massacre to send a message to the previous government.

All hell would have broken loose,five million posts flooding Nairaland, Twitter overrun with urchins spewing rage, and every newsroom packed with hypocrites from the Nigerian Police and DSS brandishing phantom theories and baseless hypotheses to dissect events in the East. Meanwhile, bloggers would be cashing out massively, spinning quantum profits from fabricated narratives.


The biggest edge the East will have is a crime free and prosperous Eastern Nigeria
